Freed at last: 220 Indian fishermen return home via Wagah

They were taken prisoner after unintentionally crossing into Pakistani waters

LAHORE: A total of 220 Indian fishermen, released from Landhi Jail in Karachi as a good will gesture, were handed over to Indian authorities at the Wagah Border on Monday.

The inmates unintentionally crossed international borders and entered those of Pakistan. On Sunday, they were transported to Lahore through a special train and reached the Lahore Railway Station on Monday morning.

From there, they were taken to Wagah and handed over to border authorities who transferred them over to Indian officials.

The fishermen appreciated the gesture and requested both countries release such prisoners who were arrested while in search of a livelihood for their families.

One of the prisoners said he was the sole bread earner. He initially worked as a manual labourer on a boat and later managed to save enough money to buy his own vessel.

When he was caught by Pakistani marine authorities, his boat was also impounded. The fishermen shuddered at the thought of his family’s suffering during his time in jail. With a regretful sigh, he says he will have to work very hard to revive his fortunes.

The Edhi Foundation arranged the food, travel expenses and a special train from Karachi to Lahore.

The fisherman thanked the organisation for its help. Edhi Foundation spokesperson said their mission is one of peace and service to humanity which was taught Dr Abdul Sattar Edhi. He also requested Indian authorities to reciprocate by releasing Pakistani prisoners.
