KWSB to set up own power plant

LG minister says excess power produced will be supplied to K-Electric

KARACHI: In a bid to solve many of its problems, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) plans to soon start producing its own electricity by setting up its own power production plant.

Local government minister Jam Khan Shoro announced this during a high-level meeting with water board officials on Sunday.



Shoro said that the establishment of KWSB's power plant will make it self-sufficient in producing and meeting its electricity requirements. On the other hand, it will also be able to provide electricity to the city's power utility company, K-Electric, as well. Shoro said that this will reduce the funds spent by KWSB on electricity by almost half, thereby increasing its profit.

He also announced that, at an expense of Rs130 million, a new supply line to the Dhabeji pumping station has been installed, which has reduced the number of power breakdowns to almost zero. He added that the earlier power breakdowns had resulted in damaged pipelines and now the continuous supply of electricity will help KWSB reduce the amount spent on the repair of these pipelines.



The minister said that it is our priority to strengthen KWSB as an institution, which will enable the utility to improve its services for the citizens of Karachi.
