GILGIT: The coldblooded murder of PPP leader Mir Nawaz drew condemnation from all segments of society in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Lawyers in G-B announced a boycott of courts and three days of mourning to condemn the assassination of senior lawyer Mir Nawaz Khan who was gunned down late Saturday. In response, all cases fixed for hearing, arguments, and announcement of verdicts were adjourned by the courts on Monday.

“There will be three days of mourning and a boycott of court proceedings across the region,” said a spokesman. He said that the decision was taken in a general body meeting discuusing responses to the brutal killing. He said lawyers would go to the extreme to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to the justice.

Attaullah Shahab, a member of the G-B Council and a senior JUI-F leader, called the killing of Mir Nawaz a condemnable act and demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. “This should end now, the perpetrators must be arrested and punished,” he said.

Maulana Nisar Ahmed, the religious leader of Ahle Sunnat, warned the government to put an end to the killing of Sunni leaders in Gilgit or bear responsibility for the situation. He said that the government didn’t arrest those guilty of firing on Salamat Jan and Jafer Ullah, two senior leaders of PML-N Gilgit in January.

Anjuman Imamia Gilgit condemned the killing of the PPP veteran leader and demanded the arrest of the killers.

Balawaristan National Front (BNF) in a statement here condemned the killing of Advocate Mir Nawaz. “Mir Nawaz was an open minded and non-prejudiced political leader of Gilgit. The string of killings in the city is the main reason behind unrest in the region,” read the statement.

Mir Nawaz, a senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party G-B, was shot dead by unknown assassins on Shaheed-e-Millat Road in Gilgit at around 9:00 pm on Saturday.

Abdul Hamid Khan | 13 years ago | Reply Mr. Farman Ali Editor Its regrettable to say that Balawaristan National Front (BNF) statement about the condemnation of killing of Adv. Mir Nawaz has not been given proper place. There is is official BNF running under agency patronage, which can be given this benefit, if and when no name of the person who issued on behalf of BNF is published. I had issue that statement from Brussels, but your newspaper has no place for us, because you also do not want to make the agency angry, this is not my perception this is complaint of many of our friends who had sent messages for this statement..
