Matter of discussion: Agriculture sector urged to use IT

LAHORE: The use of information and communication technology (ICT) in the agriculture sector will not only help improve interaction between the farming community and agro-scientists but also identify problems. This was stated by Centre of Information Technology Director General Ammar Jafri.

He was speaking at a seminar titled ICT for Agriculture in Pakistan, which was organised by the Virtual University of Pakistan. The aim is to create awareness about the use of ICT in the agriculture sector as it could help increase production.

Jafri informed the audience about the aims and objectives of the Kisan Bibi and Kisan Chacaha video learning project. “It may be recalled that with the help of Kisan Bibi and Kisan Chacaha project, a lot of farmers from far-flung areas are being trained and have access to the latest farming techniques, practices and information,” he said.

In addition to the farmers, he also discussed various initiatives being taken to help train women in ICT tools as well as skills required to successfully run their home-based businesses.
