RAWALPINDI: A 22-year-old labourer, who was critically injured after being stabbed on Friday, died at District Headquarters Hospital on Sunday, police said.

Muhammad Jamil, a resident of Pind Jhatla, died on Sunday morning due to injuries he sustained after allegedly being stabbed by Inayat Khan, a labourer and Jamil’s co-worker, at a restaurant in the Rawat area.

After Jamil was pronounced dead, the police added a murder charge to the already-registered attempted-murder case.

The police report says that Jamil and his brother Shabbir were eating dinner at the restaurant, while Inayat and Waheed Khan were eating at another table of the same restaurant. After Inayat got the bill for his dinner, he started arguing with the restaurant manager, accusing him of charging an extra Rs30.

To resolve the situation, Jamil intervened and said that he was willing to pay the extra Rs30, if Inayat could not pay.

Jamil’s offer only further angered Inayat who started brawling with the Good Samaritan. The scuffle quickly descended into a melee, as Shabbir, Waheed, and some of Inayat’s friends got involved.

During the fight, Inayat allegedly stabbed Jamil.

In his statement to the Rawat police, Jamil said that Inayat and Waheed attacked him and his brother over the petty dispute.

The Rawat police, however, said that Waheed was a contractor who had hired Inayat and Jamil as construction workers to work on a house he was building.

So far, police said, they have only arrested a watchman who works for Waheed and was allegedly involved in the melee.

After Jamil’s death, the Rawat police transferred the case to the Homicide Investigation Unit.
