Republican Donald Trump stunned the world by defeating heavily favoured Hillary Clinton in last week's presidential election, ending eight years of Democratic rule and sending the United States on a new, uncertain path.

Here we look at a series of pictures showing Trump’s rise from real estate mogul, billionaire and TV personality to Republican presidential nominee and the 45th US president.
