JPC approves 14 additional judges of LHC

ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has approved the appointment of 14 additional judges of the Lahore High Court.

The approval was given at a meeting which was held under the chairmanship of Chief Justice of Pakistan Anwar Zaheer Jamali on Thursday.

Earlier, Lahore High Court Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah sent the names of six district and sessions judges and 10 lawyers for the appointment as 14 additional judges of the high court to the JCP. The names were finalised after a comprehensive scrutiny process.

The commission approved the names of ten lawyers: Asjad Javed Goraal, Tariq Saleem Sheikh, Muhammad Bashir Paracha, Ahmad Raza Gilani, Jawwad Hassan, Muhammad Akhtar Bashir, Mudhasir Khalid Abbasi, Abdul Rehman Aurangzeb, Agha Muhammad Ali Khan and Chaudhry Abdul Aziz.

The JCP has also recommended the names of session judges including Abdul Sattar and Tariq Iftikhar Ahmad, Habibullah Amir, Mujahid Mustaqim Ahmad.

Currently, there are 46 active judges while the high court’s total strength is 60. After the appointment of 14 judges, the strength of judges will be fulfilled.

According to Article 175-A – introduced through the 18th Amendment – the JCP works under the chairmanship of the CJP.
