LAHORE: Anjum Aqeel Khan, a member of the National Assembly from Islamabad, has been summoned by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in an investigation into an alleged Rs6 billion fraud from the National Police Foundation (NPF).

The case involves the misappropriation of land that belonged to the NPF, a government-operated philanthropic organisation dedicated to the welfare of police officers. Khan, along with other officials in the NPF conducted a series of real estate transactions through which he would exchange 41 acres of land in Islamabad, worth over Rs6 billion, for the NPF land. But while Khan was able to get possession of the NPF land, he never transferred the deed of the land that was to be exchanged over to the NPF.

The investigation began after the Supreme Court took suo motu notice of the alleged fraud and asked for an explanation from the interior ministry on the matter. The interior secretary then appointed Zafar Ahmad Qureshi, a senior FIA official to lead the investigation.

Qureshi has so far issued summonses to Khan as well as Shahid Iqbal, a senior police official who also serves as the director of welfare at the NPF. Others named as suspects in the investigation include senior NPF officials including former managing director Iftikhar Ahmed Khan and former housing director Abdul Hannan.

Anjum Aqeel Khan and the other suspects have been asked to appear before the FIA investigation team on Monday (today) at 11 am.

The Supreme Court has ordered the government to submit a preliminary report of their investigation by Thursday, February 24, along with all records pertaining to the transactions.

Qureshi told The Express Tribune that the interior secretary has asked him to expedite his investigation and complete his inquiry within the next two weeks.

We must review alternate leadership to bring a strong revolution in this country for down trodden Pakistanis. May Allah help us in finding such a LEADER (not ruler) to lead us to revolutionary reforms - Aamin.
