Honour killings

Letter October 14, 2016
Nearly 1,100 women became victims of honour killing in 2015 in Pakistan alone

TURBAT: Honour violence is a form of abuse that shames, hurts and kills thousands of women and girls. There are several forms of honour violence, such as physical, emotional, and mental abuse, rape, and sexual assault. Unfortunately, society believes females are the weaker sex and hence, they are frequently forced into marriage or made to face other forms of social injustice.

A morose fact is that the perpetrators are often within the girl or woman’s own family or community. According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, nearly 1,100 women became victims of honour killing in 2015 in Pakistan alone, which are only the recorded numbers. India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan have some of the highest rates of honour violence. The United Nations and human rights organisations are, therefore, requested to take solid measures to eradicate the problem and save women.
