No time for complacency

Letter September 27, 2016
Let no one tell us that defeating the enemy would be no problem

RAWALPINDI: The Kashmir situation and the Uri attack has unnerved the Narendra Modi government, which could take any unexpected violent decision in panic to calm people and stabilise its position. Hence, the war threat may be seriously considered to prepare for any eventuality. Boasting by some politicians and intellectuals may lead the nation to complacency, which should be avoided.

Some influential personalities talk lightly of nuclear war, which is highly undesirable. Both, people from Pakistan and India should be made aware of the horrors of nuclear war in order to prevent it. I was shocked to hear Dr Babar Awan speak on television about Pakistan having the best missile system in the world, while the Indian missile system is plagued with problems, and that our nuclear weapons are better than India’s arsenal. I am sure Dr Awan must be aware of successful Indian missions to the Moon and to Mars and the launching of several satellites in precise orbits. He must also be aware of disaster even if the Indian nuclear weapon yield is equal to the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Victory in war results if the objective is achieved. We neither won the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 or 1971, nor the Kargil War, though we would not like to believe it. I hope there is no war but if forced on us, it will be a horrible one and we should be mentally prepared for it. Let no one tell us that defeating the enemy would be no problem.
