Overhaul: MoU signed to raise teaching standards at primary schools

83,000 will be trained by education department, British Council

PESHAWAR: An MoU was signed between the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Elementary and Secondary Education Department (ESED) and British Council Pakistan to improve teaching standards at primary schools across the province.

According to a press release issued on Tuesday, the agreement was signed by ESED Secretary Dr Shahzad Bangash and British Council Pakistan Country Director Jim Booth during a ceremony held in the city on Tuesday.

Under the initiative, the British Council will assist ESED in training 83,000 primary schools teachers in the province.

As per the statement, special emphasis will placed on four subjects – English, Mathematics, Science and General Knowledge.

“The three-year programme will be implemented in all districts of K-P,” the press release stated. “The programme will cost Rs568 million. The government will bear 70% of the cost of the project, while British Council will contribute 30% of the cost.”

During the first phase, ESED will provide a list of 1,500 teachers while British Council will conduct assessments to select 480 teachers as master trainers. The selected master trainers will be tested, graded and certified by the British Council.
