An official of Kandar police told The Express Tribune Fazila Bibi married Abdul Kareem last year.
The official said she was wanted to visit her parents in Karachi but her husband did not allow her to go.
“As a result, the woman consumed a poisonous substance and fell unconscious,” the official said. “Fazila’s husband rushed her to a health unit in Buner where she died.”
Zahid Khan, a rights activist, told The Express Tribune patients were facing difficulties owing to the lack of first-aid services at basic health units in Torghar.
“As a result, a large number of patients had died,” he said.
According to Zahid, the provincial government had awarded a contract to an NGO to ensure proper treatment of patients at basic health units. “Although funds worth millions of rupees had been received for this purpose, little has been done to improve facilities at these units,” he added.
Zahid urged the relevant authorities to conduct an enquiry and monitor the NGO’s activities in the district.
