The president, prime minister and chiefs of the armed forces, speaker of National Assembly and Senate chairman led a torrent of heartfelt tributes to Abdul Sattar Edhi who touched the lives of millions of people.

President Mamnoon Hussain said that Edhi’s services would be remembered forever. He urged all humanitarians to follow his footsteps.

Abdul Sattar Edhi laid to rest

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in his message said: “We have lost a great servant of humanity … Edhi was the real manifestation of love for … socially vulnerable, impoverished, helpless and poor.”

Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif was quoted by the ISPR chief as saying on Saturday: “Not just Pakistan but the entire world has been deprived of a great person.”

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah said that the nation would forever remember the … philanthropic work of Abdul Sattar Edhi who was a beacon of hope for the poor.

Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani said in a statement that Edhi’s services would be long remembered. “Edhi … earned worldwide recognition for his humanitarian work.”

Rest in power: Edhi buried amid mystics

NA Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in a message said that Edhi’s legacy of serving humanity would continue. “Edhi’s contribution to social welfare is irreplaceable. His efforts will always be remembered.”

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said in press release that Pakistan has been deprived of its greatest icon of humanity. He worked tirelessly for the underprivileged -- irrespective of their religion, caste, colour and creed, which made him the epitome of humanity for the entire world.

Former president Asif Ali Zardari said that Abdul Sattar Edhi was a saint, a giver and an awe inspiring social worker who commanded incomparable respect within the country and profound admiration abroad.

Patron-in-chief of Pakistan Hindu Council and MNA Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani said that Edhi had always actively participated in the annual mass wedding ceremonies organised by the Hindu Council for poor couples.

According to human rights activist Ansar Burney, Edhi had strived for those in need. It manifested his love for humanity and his will to stand by it, whenever needed.

Deputy Chairman of the Senate Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Leader of the House in the Senate Raja Zafarul Haq and Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Chaudhry Aitezaz Ahsan also eulogised Edhi’s unparalled services for humanity.

Singer Shehzad Roy said Edhi believed that simplicity and serving the downtrodden was part of his faith. Edhi believed in equality and wished the same system for the country.

Singer Abrarul Haq said Edhi was a kind and humble man and it was his versatility and greatness that drew thousands of people to his funeral … we are deprived of a widely loved personality.

Actress Bushra Ansari said the services of Abdul Sattar Edhi would be remembered for ages to come. Allah had chosen him for the noble cause of serving the needy and destitute.
