KARACHI: Meanwhile, the District Municipal Corporations (DMCs) have also chalked out a strategy for the upcoming rains.

Korangi DMC administrator Nisar Somro shared that they have 21 small rain drains, which have already been cleaned. According to him, dumpers, loaders and dewatering pumps are on standby. Talking about garbage dumps, he claimed to have removed all of them from his district.

Malir DMC administrator Tariq Mughal said they have 26 small drains, 80% of which have been cleaned.

Billboards taken down in Karachi but not taken away

Since Central DMC administrator Aisha Abro was unavailable, deputy commissioner Capt (retd) Fariduddin Mustafa told The Express Tribune they have identified 16 choking points in their jurisdiction. As for the major underpasses of the city, which also fall in the district, he said they have formed teams and installed pumps. East deputy commissioner Asif Jan Siddiqui said they have 78 drains in the district while they are focusing on 45. He admitted that in such a short period, all the drains cannot be cleaned, which is why they were focusing on just the choking points. South DMC administrator Muhammad Naeem pointed out that out of the 40 rain drains in the district, they have identified 13 choking points at MA Jinnah Road and Khadda Market, among others. He said that machineries will be deployed at different choking points and manual labour will be deployed at those points where machines cannot go.

Despite repeated attempts, no official from District West could be contacted.
