ISLAMABAD: Weeks after the mysterious death of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jaffarabad Jahanzaib Khan Kakar, the Balochistan government is convinced that the police chief committed suicide, sources said.

“We are convinced SSP Jahanzaib Khan Kakar killed himself with his official pistol in his office,” a senior official of the provincial Home Department said.

The official told The Express Tribune on the condition of anonymity that all investigations conducted by the police have proved that the cause of Kakar’s death was not a murder. “After this conclusion the case has been closed,” he added.

Dead Jaffarabad police chief's family denies suicide claim

On May 16, Kakar was found dead in his office chamber with blood strained uniform and a bullet hole in his temple.

It is likely that family of the deceased police officer has accepted the police’s version about the suicide as it has maintained a complete silence over the incident after the investigations.

The deceased SSP’s younger brother, Dr Aalamzaib Khan Kakar, had initially claimed that his brother was murdered by some ‘influential people’ and demanded registration of a criminal case for the killing of his brother.

The family was also determined to file a first information report (FIR) on their own if the relevant police officers would fail to do so. However, no such initiative has been taken by the family so far.

Soon after Kakar’s death, inspector general of Balochistan Police had constituted an inquiry committee headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Sharjeel Kharal, for investigation of the case.

'Jaffarabad police chief’s death likely to be premeditated murder, not suicide'

The Home Department official further revealed that the inquiry officer in his report had confirmed that the SSP had committed suicide after arriving at his office in the morning.

The official, however, refused to answer questions about a post-mortem report by police surgeon of Civil Hospital Quetta who had declared the death as a ‘murder’.

Dr Noor Baloch, who is also a forensic expert, in his findings had established that it was a ‘homicide and not a suicide’ case. He presented ‘strong and undeniable arguments’ in support of his findings and repeatedly insisted that it was a clear case of killing.

The police surgeon had also rejected a report of Dr Ashfaq, who had conducted the first autopsy at Dera Allah Yar government hospital in the morning on the day of the official’s death. The second post-mortem was carried out in the afternoon on the same day when Kakar’s family shifted his body to his hometown Quetta.

According to the medico legal report by Dr Ashfaq, the self-inflicted bullet shot was the cause of death.

Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased police officer, including Dr Aalamzaib Kakar, did not respond to several telephone calls by this correspondent during the last two weeks.

SSP Kakar murder case still in limbo

Few political parties and elders of the Kakar tribe had also alleged that the SSP’s death was a murder carried out by some highly influential people. They had demanded an investigation by a judicial commission into the tragedy as they suspected that police investigation was not credible.

The Home Department official is of the view that the demand of judicial commission was not justified as, according to him, the police had carried out a comprehensive investigation in the matter. “We don’t want to make the details of the investigation report public as it would hurt the feelings of the grieved family,” he concluded.
