61% Pakistanis believe drug use has increased

Survey shows people see drug use increasing, 71% say drug addicts should be given medical care.

ISLAMABAD: Almost two third of all Pakistanis believe that the use of narcotics has increased in Pakistan.

According to a Gilani Research Foundation survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 61 per cent believe the use of narcotics has increased in the country while 71 per cent believe that addicts should be given medical care.

In the survey, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked the following question:

“Considering all the news you receive, do you think that the use of narcotics in Pakistan is increasing or decreasing?”

Sixty one per cent said that they believe that the use of narcotics is increasing, 8 per cent considered it to be decreasing while 17 per cent said there is no change while. A considerable 14 per cent gave no response.

In a follow-up question, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked the following question:

“In your opinion how should the addicts be treated?”

Seventy one per cent of those surveyed said that they believe addicts deserve medical care, 15 per cent said that they think addicts should be punished while 10 per cent said that addicts should be left on their own, while 4 per cent gave no response.

The survey was carried out among a sample of 2,738 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country during January 2011.

mussarat hussain | 13 years ago | Reply Very unfortunate, if two third pakistanis believe that drug use has increased, why not rest of the pakistani quit drug or two third pakistani help them quit drug. Pakistan needs to launch crackdown on drug like "War on Terror". Those harboring war on Terror should also know (Rather they know it very well) that "drug" is the vital source of funding for Terrorists. Mussarat Hussain
