Terrible: Woman attacks ‘love interest’ with acid

Says he had promised to marry her but later balked.

MULTAN: A woman attacked a man with acid on Wednesday night in Makdoom Rasheed, Multan, apparently for refusing to marry her. The man has been taken to Nishtar Hospital in Multan city.

Police said Shameem, 36, a resident of Gharyal village in Makhdoom Rasheed, had apparently been involved in a romantic relationship with Sadqat, 24, for a year.

They said Shameem had been pushing him to marry her but he had refused. She attacked him with acid on Wednesday night.

Doctors at Nishtar Hospital said he had suffered 60 per cent burns, including his face. They said he was in a critical condition.

Police said they had arrested Shameem. They said she had confessed to the crime.

She told the police that Sadaqat had promised to marry her and that she had left her husband and children to be with him. She said Sadaqat had recently started making excuses not to marry her. She said she had gotten angry at him because of this and had attacked him with acid.

Sadaqat’s brother Sharafat said his brother had not been romantically involved with Shameem.

“He was engaged to marry one of our cousins and the wedding was supposed to have taken place after Eidul Fitr.”

He said that Sadaqat was not the type of man who would lead ladies on. “My brother would never have an affair with a mother of four…this incident has brought shame on our family.”

Makhdoom Rasheed police registered a case against Shameem and arrested her.
