DERA GHAZI KHAN/ MULTAN: The body of a seven-year-old child, who had drowned in Multan’s Naubahar Canal on Wednesday, was found at Ara Puli near Bahawalpur Road on Thursday.

People in the area told journalists that the child had been standing next to the canal with his sister. He panicked when he saw a bus speeding towards them and jumped into the canal and drowned.  Rescue-1122 officials said they had found the child’s body at Ara Puli near Bahawalpur Road and handed it over to his family.

People in the area said several people had drowned after falling into the canal and requested the authorities to place barriers at the canal banks in order to prevent more accidents of the kind. Separately, the body of a 19-year-old, who had drowned in the Hajana DG Canal on Sunday, was taken out of the canal by Rescue-1122 teams on Wednesday.

A Rescue-1122 official said Muhammad Qasim, son of Muhammad Ramazan, a resident of Hajana Basti, was washing his motorcycle rickshaw next to the canal when his foot slipped on the mud and he fell into the canal. He said Rescue-1122 teams had been searching for the body for several days without luck because of the high water level.

On Tuesday, Qasim’s relatives staged a demonstration in front of the Irrigation Department and locked up the office’s main gate. DG Canal Executive Engineer Sultan Mehmood Bandesha assured the protesters that they would do their best to help Rescue-1122 teams locate the body.

He said they had had to reduce the flow drastically of water before the level receded to a point where the body could be located. Rescue-1122 teams then managed to find the body and handed it over to the boy’s family.
