Right direction: ‘3 of 5 women in K-P cannot read’

PESHAWAR: At least three out of every five women in the province do not know how to read and write. This was stated in Pakistan Social and Living Standard Measurement Survey 2014-15. The gender disparity in education is greater in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, but there are women who break the shackles and soldier ahead. Reema Gul, who hails from a village in Mardan district, has a similar success story. She belongs to an underprivileged family with eight siblings. Her father works as a labourer. Although she could barely scrape through secondary education given her family’s financial position, Reema Gul managed to complete her intermediate. “I had always considered my education to be a ticket to a better life and a means to support my family,” Gul told The Express Tribune. Gul finally found a way to put her education to use. She was recruited as a teacher under a women literacy programme, to help women of her village get an education.
