KARACHI:

A judicial magistrate sent on Friday 59 Indian fishermen, held for allegedly fishing in Pakistani waters and violating territorial boundaries, to prison on a 14-day judicial remand.

The fishermen were presented before a district West magistrate by the Docks police. The investigating officer told the judge that they were arrested by the Maritime Security Agency from Sir Creek, a disputed area on the maritime border of Sindh and the Indian state of Gujarat.

They have been booked under sections 3 and 4 of the Foreigners Act and sections 3 and 9 of the Fisheries Act and their boats on which they were fishing have been seized, the officer said. The judge, after confirming each and every fisherman named in the police report was present before him, remanded them to prison and asked the investigating officer to present the charge sheet at the next hearing. These 59 fishermen were arrested along with 10 boats from Sir Creek waters by the Maritime Security Agency on Thursday. They were later shifted to Karachi. More than 100 foreign fishermen have been arrested by Pakistani authorities in past two months. Last month, Pakistani authorities released over 170 Indian fishermen while 363 still remain in custody.
