The memo sent to the employees stated that the company is deciding whether to make voluntary layoffs available to those professional engineers and technical workers who are also union employees.

The company also said it did not intend to replace the higher-level employees who leave except in rare situations.
The memo signed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes Vice President of Engineering Mike Delaney stated, “We do not intend to backfill for people who retire from their executive or management roles unless the position is absolutely vital to carrying out our work statement.”
This announcement came two weeks after chief executive Ray Conner warned the employees that job cuts were necessary to “win in the market, fund our growth and operate as a healthy business.”
He said job reductions would begin with the executive staff and managers.

Delaney said they would closely examine potential impacts to the function and their ability to serve customers if selective (voluntary layoffs) are employed.
He said, “We hope to work through our analysis as quickly as possible and share our decision with you in the next several weeks.”
