BAHAWALPUR: Bahawalpur district government administration is considering erecting a Wall of Kindness at a location to be announced soon.

DCO Ehtesham Anwar asked various departments on Thursday to suggest locations where the wall could be set up.

The DCO held a meeting in the committee room to discuss various suggestions for renovation of certain buildings and the beautification of Bahawalpur district.

“We have formed a plan in consultation with various departments…we are going to make sure everything goes according to plan.”

Anwar asked officials of various relevant departments to suggest locations in the district where a Wall of Kindness could be set up.

“Permission will not be granted to individuals or private organisations set up the wall,” he said.

The Regional Transport Authority secretary was asked to ensure installation of reflectors on slow moving vehicles in the city.

He was also asked to launch a road safety awareness campaign in the district.

Anwar also directed the Bahawalpur Waste Management Company managing director to select a site for a landfill away from the city so they could shift the dumping site. He said there were too many people living near the landfill in Bahawalpur city.

The DCO also directed all departments to improve coordination especially when resolving people’s grievances.

He told the tehsil municipal committee to monitor the staff deployed at the sewerage line. “They need to be more efficient and active.”

He said the administration was taking every possible step to make the city pleasant to live in.

Derelict buildings

The district coordination officer later attended a meeting of the divisional technical committee headed by Additional Coordination Commissioner Saqib Ali Adeel.

The participants were told that more than 1,000 buildings in Bahawalpur district would be renovated. The schedule for maintenance and demolition of dangerous buildings in the division has been prepared.

The participants were told that the provincial government has issued directions to all district administrations to demolish dangerous and derelict buildings.

Tenants in these buildings will get a month to evacuate the building. The buildings will be demolished a week after they are evacuated. Participants were told that owners of private derelict buildings would be a month to make necessary repairs.

Officials will be given a week’s time to prepare estimates for the maintenance of derelict public buildings. Funds for the maintenance and repair of these buildings will be released in a week. Construction will then start after a month.
