LOS ANGELES: Two teenage girls were killed Friday in a shooting at a high school in the southwestern US state of Arizona, police said, adding they believe the tragedy was an "isolated incident."

Officer Tracey Breeden, of the Glendale police department, identified the two victims as 15-year-old girls who were found next to each with a weapon nearby.

She told a news conference that each had suffered a gunshot wound.

Breeden said it was unclear what prompted the shooting that took place shortly before 8:00 am at Independence High School, with police arriving on the scene within minutes.

The school was placed on lockdown immediately after the shooting that took place in an outdoor area of the school, with panicked parents rushing to the site for word about their kids.
