‘Afridi not a certain choice as captain’

PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt has said captain Shahid Afridi is not certain to be retained as leader for World Cup.

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ijaz Butt has said that limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi is not certain to be retained as the leader for the World Cup that starts on February 19.

Ijaz said the final decision will be taken on January 19 — the day when the Test series between Pakistan and New Zealand ends. Afridi, who has come under scathing attack for his leadership skills by former players, was the leading run-scorer in One-Day Internationals for Pakistan last year with 601 and also claimed the highest 19 wickets with Shoaib Akhtar.

However, after the Twenty20 losses against South Africa and New Zealand, there were questions regarding his captaincy skills as the PCB decides on a successor.

Asked if changing the captain right before the World Cup would harm the team, the chairman said, “The media is going create a ruckus if we announce it now and if we do it later. So it’s better if we wait.”

arif | 13 years ago | Reply .afridi iz the best choice as a pakistani captain anda as a nation v fully support him as a cptn of pakistan cricket team.its not something new that pak cptn has lost a series..from last 4 years v hve not won much seriwes.the board should have made afridi as a paki captain after 2007 world cup..now he would hve been a wonderful leader

sheru | 13 years ago | Reply Well I personally believe Misbah is best choice to lead pak for the world cup but if afridi retains the captsaincy then pak wil loose world cup for sure. Lets take the short lket afridi be the captain and in future we have lots of match coming, so make misbah captain after world cup.

Syed M. Shoaib | 13 years ago | Reply Afridi is a good captain, but there is also the responsibility of coach to guide his captain that how to utilize the players. I would suggest PCB to retain him as captain for Limited overs cricket i.e., ODI and T20. If PCB is thinking of Misbah as captain, then this is the end of World Cup campaign before the World Cup. In my opinion as Pakistan Cricket Lover, if PCB is desperate and eager of changing the captain, it would go for veteran 'Younis Khan' or a fresh captain as 'Asad Shafiq' or 'Azhar Ali' before the ODI series of Newzeland...

He can be the tremendous star ; if he's treated well as limited-overs captain . PCB & it's selection committee need to support him but not always . A slight change in a strategy with his defence can be fruitful . But who cares ! He's the one % only one Paki's Star who seems unstoppable at any cost .. Let it be ; Give some more time for this gentleman . Who knows ! He might be the next the world cup -prize -winning captain . Give him some hope ! .

Amer | 13 years ago | Reply If they remove Afridi from captaincy and still retain him in the team it would mean certain loss for Pakistan in the world cup since there would be alot of politics in the dressing room. This decision coming after the test series is nothing but a political move by Mr. Butt, he doesn't wana lose any chances of ruining the world cup for every Pakistani.
