LAHORE:

All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) Punjab Chairman Aamir Fayyaz has said that a delay in announcement of the textile package by the government is causing unemployment in the province.

“A large number of mills in the province have curtailed their operations while over two dozen have shut down altogether, leaving thousands of workers jobless,” said Fayyaz while addressing a press conference on Saturday.

Despite the last four months’ data showing a significant decline in textile exports, the government has been delaying the announcement of the textile package since August, he said, adding a meeting with the prime minister has also proved useless as he had committed to resolving the issues by September.

“Though industries in other provinces continue receiving a smooth gas supply throughout the year, Punjab’s textile industry is facing serious viability issues due to unprecedented energy cuts.”

During 2010, gas supply on average was at least 73%, but it dropped to 25% this year and was further cut down recently to 16.67% by Sui Northern Gas Pipelines.
