Singling out Musharraf

Letter July 13, 2013
How come anyone even remotely connected with the Bugti death is to be tried.

RAWALPINDI: “Shaukat Aziz to be brought to Pakistan through Interpol”, read a recent news report. How come anyone even remotely connected with the Bugti death is to be tried — General (retd) Pervez Musharraf as then-president, Shaukat Aziz as then-prime minister, Owais Ghani as then governor of Balochistan, and Aftab Sherpao as the then interior minister?

However, in the case of November 2007 and the abrogation of the Constitution, a far more serious offence, only Musharraf is being singled out for trial and several other army and civilians equally involved in the crime are not to be touched? It was quite comical to hear a well-known lawyer say the other day on a TV show that let’s try Musharraf for high treason under the November case since it is simpler than the October 12, 1999, case (in which case, apart from many other generals, the higher judiciary was also involved)!

Is this not tantamount to saying, “Hang Musharraf” whatever be the manner ?

Col (retd) Riaz Jafri
