KARACHI:
Pakistan’s recent defeat against Bangladesh in the first test match has left both the team and its fans deeply disheartened. While winning and losing are part of the game, the lack of quality cricket is concerning. Adding to the woes, the ICC’s slow over-rate punishment has further demoralised Pakistan Cricket.
Several factors contribute to the decline of test cricket in Pakistan. Firstly, PCB’s attempt to emulate the modern fast-paced style of Test cricket has proven unsuitable. Secondly, the ongoing captaincy quagmire has prevented the team from gelling as it used to, affecting morale. Thirdly, altering home conditions, such as using drop-in pitches and foreign curators since 2022, has negated the home advantage. Lastly, the spin bowling department has been neglected, with either a lack of focus on available bowlers or the preference for pace-friendly pitches.
These issues can be resolved if the PCB adopts a moderate yet firm approach. Pakistan should focus on playing its traditional brand of test cricket, in which it excels. The team must unite, and any internal conflicts should be swiftly addressed. Additionally, the home advantage should be prioritised, with spin-friendly wickets if necessary, and spinners should be included in the playing XI. If there is a dearth of quality spinners, the PCB should initiate a spin bowling camp to nurture talent, as Pakistan is renowned as the land of bowlers.
