10K fishing boats from Sindh and Balochistan to be brought under VMS network

The federal government has finalised a plan to install Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) on fishing boats to enhance maritime security and curb illegal activities at sea.

The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) will oversee the installation. Before the equipment is fitted, all boats will be registered formally.

Sources said around 10,000 fishing boats from Sindh and Balochistan will be brought under the VMS network. In the first phase, 4,000 boats from Sindh and 4,000 from Balochistan will be covered. Only boats 12 meters, 39 feet, or longer will be equipped, as smaller vessels do not have the capacity for long-distance sea travel. The cost, estimated at Rs100,000 to Rs150,000 per unit, will be borne by the government. The VMS device is being manufactured locally.

Officials said the move will allow real-time tracking of hundreds of boats operating simultaneously at sea. It will help identify suspicious vessels, reach accident sites faster, prevent the use of harmful nets and illegal fishing, and monitor smuggling of liquor, drugs, and human trafficking. The long-pending project was previously stalled after reservations from fishermen's organizations.

Maritime experts said VMS is a satellite and communication system used worldwide to monitor vessels. It tracks a boat's speed, direction, and movement in real time, similar to an online tracking system, and also supports enforcement of fisheries laws.

Sources added the system will also act as a safety shield for fishermen.

In an emergency, pressing a single button will enable rescue agencies to locate a boat in distress. It will further help detect boats operating without personal safety gear or firefighting equipment, and crack down on the nighttime distribution of banned nets from illegal jetties.

Under the law, vessels over 15 meters cannot go into deep sea without the system.

16 witnesses named as police detail cocaine recovery and online drug network

Police have submitted a preliminary challan before the judicial magistrate (District South) in a high-profile narcotics case against alleged "Cocaine Queen" Anmol, alias Pinky, detailing an extensive drug trafficking network operating between Karachi and Lahore.

According to the challan submitted by Garden police on Monday, 16 witnesses have been included in the case, while multiple accused have been nominated and arrested. Those in custody include Pinky, Zeeshan-ur-Rehman, Sohail-ur-Rehman, and Muhammad Sameer. Fugitive suspects identified in the case include Basil Amika, Humaira, and Sabra Bibi.

The police stated that during the arrest on May 11 from a flat in Garden, 1,240 grams of prepared cocaine, 15 capsules containing 300 grams of cocaine, cash, and drug-manufacturing equipment were recovered.

The challan claims that the accused has been involved in narcotics activities since 2018, with cases registered against her in both Karachi and Lahore up to 2026. Due to absconding, her CNIC, passport, and bank accounts have reportedly been blocked.

Investigators further alleged that Pinky learned drug preparation techniques from her former husband and continued the trade after their separation. She is accused of distributing cocaine through a network targeting upscale areas of Karachi, educational institutions, and private parties.

The challan states that the accused frequently changed locations between Karachi and Lahore while operating an organised supply chain. Initially, narcotics were allegedly transported via co-accused Sabra through local transport routes, with payments made per consignment.

Following Sabra's arrest in a 2019 ANF case, the network allegedly expanded by opening accounts in her name and later involving other co-accused, including Humaira and Basil Amika, for logistics and delivery.

Digital forensic analysis of mobile phones reportedly revealed the involvement of riders identified as Azaaz, Hamza, and Aqib. The challan claims the group facilitated online sales via WhatsApp, with payments routed through multiple bank accounts operated by co-accused Zeeshan and Sohail.

According to investigators, payment confirmations were shared through screenshots, after which drugs were delivered through riders.

Shah directs Food Dept to strictly monitor stocks in the province

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed the Food Department to launch strict action against wheat hoarding and ensure effective monitoring of wheat stocks across the province to stabilise prices and protect consumers.

Chairing a joint meeting of the Food and Agriculture Departments at the Chief Minister House on Monday, he stressed the need to regulate wheat storage practices and ensure market stability through timely procurement of locally produced wheat.

CM Shah reviewed the procurement progress for the 2025-26 wheat crop and expressed concern over the pace of government purchases. He directed officials to prevent artificial shortages and curb price manipulation in the market.

Officials briefed the chief minister that wheat procurement for the current season began on April 1, 2026, with the provincial government fixing the support price at Rs3,500 per 40kg and approving Rs60 per 50kg bag on account of bardana charges. It was further informed that under the Sindh Wheat Growers Support Programme 2025, a total of 332,090 farmers had been declared eligible for support.

However, against a procurement target of 10 million metric tons, only 81,348.61 metric tons of wheat had been procured by June 12, prompting the chief minister to direct officials to explore the option of procuring around 200,000 metric tons from PASSCO to bridge the shortfall. The meeting also reviewed a divisional survey of privately held wheat stocks conducted jointly by the district administration and the Food Department on the chief minister's directives issued on May 6.

Cautions that rapidly melting glaciers, possible glacial lake outburst floods could cause heavy water flows

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday issued an alert warning of heavy rainfall, strong winds and potential flood-like conditions across the northern and upper parts of the country from June 16 to 20.

According to the advisory, a westerly weather system is expected to affect the region during this period, bringing thunderstorms, gusty winds and scattered rainfall, with hail possible at some locations.

In Punjab, thunderstorms and rain are likely in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Talagang, Mandi Bahauddin, Sargodha, Gujar Khan, Gujrat, Jhelum, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Faisalabad, Khushab, Jhang, Dera Ghazi Khan, Kasur, Okara, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan.

In Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), rain and thunderstorms are expected in Skardu, Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Hunza, Ghanche, Shigar, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Bagh, Kotli, Poonch, Hattian, Mirpur and Bhimber.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) is also likely to receive widespread rain with thunderstorms in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Swabi, Mardan, Charsadda, Peshawar, Kohat, Parachinar, Karak, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and North Waziristan.

In Sindh, scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected in Jacobabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Khairpur, Dadu, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Shaheed Benazirabad and Nawabshah.

The NDMA warned that between June 16 and 19, rainfall combined with rising temperatures may trigger flood-like situations in parts of K-P, AJK and G-B.

It further cautioned that rapidly melting glaciers and possible glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) could cause heavy water flows in streams and rivers originating from mountainous regions.

— FFDLahore (@ffdlhr) June 16, 2026

Areas at risk of GLOF include Hassanabad, Shishper, Gulkin, Gulmit, Passu, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu and Shigar, the advisory said.

The authority also warned of possible landslides and closure of link roads in hilly areas due to rainfall and unstable conditions.

NDMA has directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert in sensitive mountainous and highway regions. Tourists and travellers have been advised to check weather and road conditions before travelling to northern areas.

Seawater intrusion has caused widespread devastation in Keti Bandar with hundreds of families displaced after a breach in a protective embankment.

The situation turned critical in the coastal tehsil of Keti Bandar after seawater entered residential areas. Four days ago, a breach appeared in the protective bund of Union Council Keti Bandar, allowing saline water to flood several villages.

Officials and locals said villages including Ali Bakhsh Jat, Hashim Jat, and Usman Dablo have come under water. Homes have been inundated, daily life has been severely disrupted, and affected families are moving to safer areas.

Residents said the water level continues to rise, putting more settlements at risk. Locals alleged they had repeatedly informed the relevant authorities about the breaches in the embankment and the increasing sea pressure, but no timely action was taken.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Monday said the Sindh government has proven its performance through work, not words.

"Sindh government didn't make claims. We did the work, more work, and showed results," Memon said. Criticising rival parties, he said, "Some people hold press conferences daily, hurl accusations and remain busy in political point-scoring." He maintained that the Sindh government was resolving public issues through practical measures.

Bank records and digital forensic material link accused to drug network,
rules court

The district and sessions judge (District South) on Monday rejected the bail applications of alleged facilitators in the Anmol alias Pinky drug case, observing that the available evidence provides sufficient grounds for their involvement at the preliminary stage.

Announcing the reserved written judgment, the court held that the accused were, prima facie, key facilitators of the main suspect Pinky. It further observed that investigative findings, including bank records and digital evidence, establish their connection with the alleged narcotics network.

The court further observed that under the Sindh Control of Narcotic Substances Act, assistance in drug manufacturing or financial facilitation constitutes a punishable offence. It added that material collected during investigation suggests the applicants had acted as aides to the main accused and co-suspect Humaira.

The court further stated that a preliminary challan had already been submitted in the case, and at this stage, the grant of bail could not be justified in view of the available evidence.

According to prosecution claims, co-accused Sohail-ur-Rehman and Zeeshan-ur-Rehman were involved in laundering proceeds of narcotics, with funds being routed through different accounts after Pinky's bank accounts were frozen.

It was alleged that transactions were carried out through accused Sameer, and that Sohail allegedly used accounts linked to Sameer and Zeeshan for property-related payments and procurement of raw materials.

The prosecution further claimed that Pinky's younger brother Nasir had been employed with Sameer since 2016, strengthening the alleged link between the parties.

It was also stated that forensic examination of mobile phones recovered from the main accused revealed the involvement of the co-accused, while suspicious financial transactions were detected in their bank accounts. Investigators claimed that funds were transferred from these accounts to the main accused and other alleged associates.

During the hearing, defence counsel Rehman Ghani Khattak Advocate argued that Sohail and Zeeshan had no connection with co-accused Sameer, terming the allegations as "old and unsubstantiated." He maintained that the applicants were not named in the FIR and were implicated later during the course of investigation.

However, police argued that the case was registered at Garden police station and subsequent evidence collected during investigation established their role in the alleged network.
