Conflicting accounts from sub-inspector, accused’s parents prompt an official inquiry

A late-night police check in Defence Housing Authority spiralled into a high-profile confrontation involving the son of a senior police officer and a police sub-inspector, triggering an arrest, viral videos and a formal inquiry into the incident.

The incident took place between Thursday and Friday night.

The clash occurred during snap checking in Phase VII, where police stopped a double-cabin vehicle fitted with police-style lights and an allegedly fake number plate. What followed was a heated exchange between the driver — later identified as Khubaib, son of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Naseem Ara Panhwar — and Sub-Inspector Shahzaib Shakeel, the in-charge of the Qayyumabad police post.

In videos recorded from both sides, the situation quickly escalated. Police footage shows the officer accusing the young man of hurling abuses and grabbing his collar, while repeatedly warning him to remain respectful.

A separate clip, filmed by the driver, captured the officer retorting, “What is so special about being an SSP’s son? I am one too,” as tensions mount.

Police later registered a case and arrested Khubaib on charges including obstruction of duty, impersonation and use of a fake number plate, along with allegations of misconduct and physical confrontation. Authorities said the vehicle carried unauthorised police fittings, including tinted windows and official-style lights.

According to the first information report, the suspect allegedly refused to identify himself, claimed his mother was a senior officer and directed armed guards accompanying him to push the officer aside. The complainant further alleged that, during an attempt to detain him, the suspect grabbed his collar, used abusive language and fled the scene with his guards.

However, the suspect’s father, Ali Anwar, presented a sharply different account. Speaking to reporters, he claimed that after the incident, both he and his wife visited the police station, where the officer in question apologised. He said the family cooperated fully, handing over the vehicle, but alleged that the situation changed dramatically after the video went viral.

Police officials confirmed that an inquiry had been ordered by the South SSP, who appointed Clifton Superintendent of Police Khalid Javed as the investigation officer. The probe will examine the conduct of all parties, including the actions of the police personnel involved.

Ambassador Mortensen expresses Denmark’s interest in green energy initiatives in Sindh

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Friday met Denmark’s ambassador, Maja Derrous Mortensen, in Karachi and discussed investment opportunities, environmental protection, and the promotion of clean and renewable energy, particularly wind power projects.

According to a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s House, CM Sindh told the Ambassador that the provincial government is working to improve electricity distribution and reduce power tariffs by lowering production costs and transmission losses.

He said Sindh already has its own transmission company and is pursuing projects aimed at providing cheaper electricity to consumers. “Lower electricity costs will provide relief to the public and ensure industrial growth,” he said.

Both sides discussed potential investment in wind corridors and wind energy projects. The chief minister said Sindh is keen to develop the renewable energy sector and has significant potential for wind power generation.

Ambassador Mortensen expressed Denmark’s interest in green energy initiatives in Sindh, noting that the province could become a key regional hub for wind energy.

She said Denmark places strong emphasis on environmentally friendly projects and is keen to explore new investment opportunities with Sindh.

The chief minister also highlighted coastal development plans, including the strategic port area of Keti Bandar, which he said holds historical significance and lies just 56 kilometres from Karachi.

He said the development of Keti Bandar into a modern port could ease pressure on Karachi’s existing port infrastructure and become an important centre for future economic activity.

Shah also invited Danish investors to explore opportunities in Sindh, saying the provincial government is providing a favourable environment for foreign investment.

Both sides agreed on further strengthening Pakistan–Denmark relations and exchanged greetings on 75 years of successful diplomatic ties.

Police obtain CCTV footage, begin further investigation

A case has been registered at Karachi's Gulistan-e-Johar police station on Friday over a firing incident at a cafe during a dispute in which one young man was killed and another injured. The FIR names four suspects, including the cafe manager and security guard, along with unidentified persons. Police had earlier detained six individuals, including the cafe manager and security guard, and shifted them to the police station.

During the late night between Thursday and Friday, a firing incident took place at a cafe in Block 1 of Gulistan-e-Johar police station limits, resulting in the death of 22-year-old Najeebullah, son of Niaz Ali, and injuries to another young man, Adnan, son of Khalid Hussain.

A case of murder and attempted murder (FIR No. 26/369) was registered on the complaint of the deceased’s brother, Mubashir Ali, at Gulistan-e-Johar police station. The nominated suspects include Jahanzaib, cafe manager Mehdi, Hussain Shah, security guard Akramullah, and unidentified persons.

According to police officials, some young men had entered the cafe and sat in the family section, upon which the management asked them to leave. They initially went back but later returned with more people, after which an argument broke out and the situation escalated into violence.

During the confrontation, some individuals allegedly attempted to snatch a weapon from the security guard, who was pushed to the ground and beaten. Police said the guard then opened fire, resulting in one death and one injury.

Police have also obtained CCTV footage of the incident and have begun further investigation. They added that further legal proceedings will follow after the completion of the inquiry.

On the other hand, a friend of the deceased and president of the youth wing, Zohaib, confirmed that the deceased belonged to the PML-N youth wing. Zohaib said children from the area used to visit the sheesha cafe, where drugs were allegedly being used openly, which is why youth wing members had come to the cafe area to check the situation and stop children from visiting.

He said they had also asked the cafe owners to shut down the “illegal business,” but they did not comply.

PS-100 PML-N office bearer Taufiq Ahmed Mangi said Najeeb was an office bearer and member of the organising committee. He said some young men came to speak to the café management about stopping drugs and the café operations, but the security guard misbehaved.

When Najeeb tried to intervene, the cafe owner, his son, and three to four others allegedly pulled out pistols and opened fire. Mangi said a bullet hit Najeeb in the chest, and he died on the spot, while another worker trying to help him was pushed and also shot in the foot.

He further alleged that the cafe owner openly claimed that they paid Rs300,000 to Rs400,000 as a bribe to the police and said no one could harm them as he was the son of an Senior Superintendent of Police.

Mangi added that the café owner and his associates had been involved in previous incidents of firing, injuring several people, and killing a young man.

Relatives of kidnapped seafarers say 0-day-silence has deepened fears, urge govt to ensure safe return

Families of Pakistani crew members of an oil tanker seized by pirates in Somalia have expressed deep concern over the safety of their loved ones, saying 10 days have passed since the hijacking of the vessel and no tangible progress has been made for their recovery.

Addressing a press conference at the Karachi Press Club on Thursday, the relatives said the lives of the kidnapped crew members remain at serious risk amid reported shortages of food and water on board the vessel.

They said the federal government has not directly contacted affected families nor provided any clear update regarding ransom demands or ongoing negotiations. The families urged government authorities to immediately appoint a focal person to maintain communication with them and keep them informed of developments.

The families demanded swift action for the safe recovery and repatriation of the seized Pakistani crew members, saying they are living under extreme mental distress and uncertainty.

According to details shared during the presser, oil tanker MT Honor 25 was hijacked by Somali pirates on April 21 near Somali waters. The 17-member crew includes 10 Pakistani nationals. The vessel is reportedly operated by Worf Chartering, a company registered in Indonesia, while the ship's captain is also said to be Indonesian.

The families said the Pakistani crew includes officers and ratings serving in different capacities, including engineers, oilers, and a fitter. They added that while crew members had previously managed occasional communication with their families, contact has now been disrupted due to their captivity.

The distraught families said they have no confirmed information regarding ransom demands or any formal communication from the pirates.

They appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take immediate notice of the situation and ensure the safe return of the crew. They also urged Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to intervene, saying repeated attempts to contact authorities have not yielded any response.

The families further demanded the formation of a high-level committee to handle the case and called for urgent diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue on a priority basis.

They also appealed to the United Nations to take action against rising incidents of maritime piracy and to strengthen international measures for the protection of seafarers.

The families said they have been informed of contacts between Pakistani and Somali authorities and expressed hope that efforts will soon lead to the safe return of their loved ones.

Mayor says comparisons inappropriate given differences in population, infrastructure demands and resource availability

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Wednesday objected to comparisons between Karachi and Lahore in terms of infrastructure and governance, saying the two provincial capitals face different on-ground realities.

He made the remarks during a joint press conference in Lahore alongside Punjab Housing Minister Bilal Yasin, who welcomed the Karachi mayor and his delegation on their arrival. Speaking at the briefing, Wahab said comparisons between Karachi and Lahore were inappropriate given differences in population, infrastructure demands and resource availability.

He noted that Karachi receives water from a distance of 125 kilometres, has a daily requirement of 1,100 million gallons, but is supplied only 550 million gallons per day (MGD), while its population continues to grow. He added that such comparisons create unnecessary friction and emphasised the need for both administrations to collaborate and share expertise.

Yasin briefed the Karachi mayor on drainage and clean water supply projects in Lahore, outlining technical measures including SCADA-based monitoring systems, helpline services, solarisation, water metering and wastewater treatment plants.

He said the Punjab government had expanded five water agencies to 41 districts within a year, adding that thousands of kilometres of new pipelines were being laid under the WASA Punjab Development Plan.

He also noted that operational monitoring was being improved through full digitalisation of WASA, while the construction of underground water tanks would help improve drainage and groundwater levels.

Responding to a question, Wahab said such comparisons lead to “an unfortunate situation” and noted that the Karachi administration aims to complete under-construction bridges within 90 days.

Describing Karachi as Pakistan’s “commercial capital”, he stressed the need for collective efforts. “Presenting a Karachi-Lahore divide as a political conflict does not serve Pakistan,” he said.

Wahab termed his first joint press conference in Lahore with Yasin an honour and said he had visited the city with a delegation from the Karachi Water Board. He also invited the people of Lahore to visit Karachi.

He said learning from each other was a positive process and announced that a memorandum of understanding would be signed between Karachi and Lahore WASA to enhance cooperation.

The delegation included CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, COO Asadullah Khan, CCO Haris Sarfraz, CSO Sadiq Younis and CFO Ammar Khan. On the occasion, WASA Punjab Chairman Chaudhry Sher Ali Khan, Vice Chairman Chaudhry Shahbaz Ahmed and WASA Managing Director Ghafran Ahmed were also present.

Officials said the purpose of the visit was to exchange experiences between the two institutions and promote cooperation aimed at improving citizen services.

Landowners will be able to carry out property transactions after paying prescribed government fees, taxes online

The Senior Member Board of Revenue Syed Khalid Hyder Shah has expressed hope that the launch of the property card system on a digital e-transfer platform will make the previously complex and lengthy property transfer process simple, fast, and secure. Visiting Matiari district to review progress on the rewriting of the record of rights on Monday, he believed that the e-registration of properties will also discourage corruption and illegal practices - a tacit acknowledgment that such ills still exist in the system.

The SMBR was briefed that the record of four dehs in Matiari has been rewritten while the exercise is progressing in 65 other dehs out of a total of 112 dehs in the district. Commissioner Hyderabad division Fayaz Abbasi described the Matiari team's work as exemplary for the entire province.

Member Reforms, Board of Revenue, Saifullah Abro said, the landowners will be able to easily carry out property transactions after paying the prescribed government fees and taxes online thanks to the digitisation. The Secretary Revenue Mehboob Siyal underlined that buyers and sellers can now visit the People's Service Center, and in the presence of two witnesses, complete the transfer of property or land records through a digital application at one place, saving both time and resources.

Under the system, once a property card is issued in the name of an owner, it will automatically update in the system whenever a newer transaction takes place.

City council approval not taken before increasing tax in power bills

The constitutional bench of the Sindh High Court has sought responses from K-Electric and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation on a petition challenging the increase in municipal tax included in electricity bills.

The two-member bench, headed by Justice Yousuf Ali Saeed, heard the petition filed by City Council Opposition Leader Saifuddin.

During the hearing, the petitioner's counsel, Usman Farooq, argued that the court had last year granted conditional permission for the imposition of the tax. He stated that any imposition or increase in the tax requires approval from the city council.

The counsel further contended that Mayor Murtaza Wahab unlawfully increased the tax without obtaining council approval. He requested the court to declare the increase illegal, adding that a fresh petition had been filed due to non-compliance with earlier court orders.

It was also argued that the court had directed that the tax be implemented in consultation with the opposition. However, the mayor imposed the Municipal Utility Charges and Taxes (MUCT) through electricity bills without such consultation.

Disability quota jobs

The constitutional bench of the Sindh High Court has sought a compliance report within two weeks on a petition against the Karachi Development Authority (KDA) for not granting employment to visually impaired siblings.

During the hearing, the petitioner's counsel, Usman Farooq Advocate, argued that the court had previously ordered both individuals to be regularised under the disability quota. The petitioners, Saima and Mujtaba, were appointed in KDA on a contract basis and worked there for two to three years.

Three people lost their lives and two others were injured in separate traffic accidents in Landhi and Manghopir on Sunday. The incidents, involving motorcycles and runaway oil tankers, have raised safety concerns as police investigate the causes and review CCTV footage from the scenes.

A traffic accident near Landhi No 6 Chowrangi on Sunday left one young man dead and another injured. Both were riding a motorcycle when they were hit by a speeding, unidentified vehicle. The injured were rushed to Jinnah Hospital, where the deceased was identified as 25-year-old Yasir and the injured as 20-year-old Israr.

Meanwhile, two people were killed when an oil tanker lost control and struck them in Manghopir's Mianwali Colony. The victims have been identified as 70-year-old Lal Man Shah and 25-year-old Asadullah.

Manghopir SHO Khush Nawaz said initial investigations suggest the accident occurred due to brake failure in the oil tanker. Another stationary tanker on the roadside was struck by the moving tanker, which then collided with a dumper. Both victims were hit during the crash.

Nearly Rs15m recovered in gold, jewellery; three accomplices at large

A case of betrayal emerged in Karachi's Landhi area, where a daughter orchestrated a robbery at her parents' home, looting nearly Rs15 million worth of gold and jewellery. The prime suspect, Azmi, has been arrested, while three of her accomplices remain at large.

According to police, the incident took place on March 14 at a residence in Area 4/B, Landhi No 5. Azmi planned the robbery with one female and two male friends. On the morning of the crime, she and her accomplices entered her parents' home, held her father, mother, siblings, in-laws, and nieces and nephews at gunpoint and with knives, and looted gold and jewelry from the house's cupboards.

The case (FIR No 152/2026) was registered at Landhi Police Station under robbery sections, with the complaint lodged by Azmi's brother, Mohammad Khalid. Police began a detailed investigation and widened the scope to include family members as suspects after initial leads.

CCTV footage obtained during the investigation reportedly showed Azmi leaving the house twice before the robbery - once wearing a black abaya and returning in a different colour. Acting on suspicion, police detained Azmi, who eventually confessed to planning the robbery at her own mother's house.

Authorities also recovered the stolen gold and jewellery, which Azmi had hidden in her own room. Police said the suspect is divorced and works at a beauty parlor, while family members had previously complained about her poor conduct.

Efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining accomplices. Police continue raids to track the three suspects, but no further arrests have been made so far.

Robbery foiled in DHA

An attempt to rob a house in DHA Phase VII was foiled after an alleged exchange of fire between police and armed muggers near Khayaban-e-Saadi. In this encounter, one outlaw was killed while two police officers sustained injuiries.

According to SSP South Mahzoor Ali, four armed robbers entered a bungalow and held the watchman and other domestic staff hostage at gunpoint. After receiving information through the Madadgar 15 helpline, police reached the scene, prompting the suspects to attempt an escape.

During the incident, three of the robbers managed to flee, while one suspect opened fire on the police party. As a result of the firing, 25-year-old police constable Shehzad Javed and 35-year-old constable Arsalan Malik were seriously injured. Police retaliated, killing the suspect on the spot.

Rescue sources said the injured policemen and body of the suspect were shifted to Jinnah Hospital. Constable Shehzad's condition was reported to be critical after he sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

Taking notice of the incident, Sindh Interior Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar sought a report from the SSP South and directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured officers. SSP South Mahzoor Ali later visited Jinnah Hospital to inquire about the health of the wounded policemen and instructed hospital staff to provide them with the best medical care.

Says escalating regional conflict, possibility of supply disruptions exposed Pakistan's vulnerability to energy shocks

Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Altaf Shakoor on Sunday urged the government to focus on developing domestic oil and gas resources to ensure long-term energy security in the wake of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

In a statement, he said escalating conflict in the region and the possibility of supply disruptions had exposed Pakistan's vulnerability to global energy shocks, adding that fluctuations in international oil prices could have serious economic consequences for the country.

He said Pakistan imported the majority of its petroleum requirements and its annual oil import bill ran into billions of dollars. Any surge in global oil prices, he noted, quickly translated into higher fuel costs, increased electricity tariffs and additional pressure on the country's foreign exchange reserves.

Shakoor said the prevailing geopolitical uncertainty highlighted the need for Pakistan to reduce its dependence on imported energy and instead utilise its own natural resources.

He pointed out that despite heavy reliance on imports, Pakistan was not an energy-poor country. Geological surveys indicated the presence of significant untapped reserves of oil and natural gas in sedimentary basins across Sindh, Balochistan and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while offshore areas in the Arabian Sea were also believed to hold considerable hydrocarbon potential.

However, he said exploration activity in Pakistan had remained limited compared to countries with similar geological prospects. Domestic oil and gas production had either stagnated or declined in recent years, widening the gap between demand and local supply and increasing reliance on imports.

The PDP chief attributed the situation to regulatory uncertainty, bureaucratic delays and inconsistent policy frameworks, which he said had discouraged both local and international investors. He added that exploration companies required long-term stability and clear incentives before committing substantial capital to drilling and development projects.

Hashmi, a Karachi-based lawyer and politician, previously served as a member of the Senate of Pakistan from March 2015 to February 2018. Born on January 28, 1960, in Karachi, he began practising law in the late 1980s and specialises in criminal and constitutional cases.

In 2015, he was elected to the Senate on a Punjab seat on the PML-N ticket. He has also been active in raising civic issues related to Karachi. The federal government led by the PML-N later appointed him governor of Sindh.

President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday approved the appointment of Nehal Hashmi as the new governor of Sindh on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, replacing Kamran Tessori.

According to a statement from the President’s House, the approval was granted under Articles 48 and 101 of the Constitution. The president also signed the commission of appointment formalising Hashmi’s nomination. Earlier, the prime minister had sent a summary to the president for approval and later met Hashmi to congratulate him.
