Ms Wang calls her date's food 'mediocre' and describes him as being 'as silent as a wooden mannequin'

A Chinese woman found herself in a rather awkward situation with her blind date after Zhengzhou authorities decided to impose immediate lockdown in the neighbourhood shw was in.

According to BBC, the woman who identified herself as Ms Wang said that she was advancing to an age where her marriage prospects would be limited in China; in light of that, her parents arranged 10 blind dates. Date number five told her that he was a good cook and invited her to his home so that he may cook her dinner.

"I'm getting quite old, so my parents arranged more than 10 blind dates for me," she said in a social media post.

Her date's community went into immediate lockdown during their meal resulting in her being stranded in his home for four days. Wang said that although the "situation was not ideal", her date cooked meals for her during those four days.

Ms Wang called her date's food "mediocre" and described him as being "as silent as a wooden mannequin".

“Besides the fact that he’s as mute as a wooden mannequin, everything else [about him] is pretty good,”

During her time in her date's home, Ms Wang decided to film their daily activities. She would film him cooking meals for her and working on his laptop as she slept. The videos were uploaded onto a Chinese social media platform called WeChat. After the videos went viral online, she took them down as they started affecting her date's personal life.

“Friends have been calling him and I think this has definitely affected his life, so I have taken them down for now,”

Zhengzhou has faced an outbreak in Covid cases with approximately 100 cases reported within a week. Zhengzhou houses 12.6 million residents and testing drives have been initiated for any "silent carriers".

Protestors and Police clash during visit, crowds demand punishments for clergymen accused of pedophilia crimes

Pope Francis met alone Tuesday with a small group of victims of sexual abuse by priests in Chile, after he publicly asked for forgiveness and riot police broke up a protest near the first public mass of his South American visit.
During the "strictly private" meeting at the Vatican's Apostolic Nunciature embassy in Santiago, the victims "spoke of their suffering to Pope Francis, who listened to them and prayed and cried with them," the Vatican said.

Pope in Chile expresses 'pain' and 'shame' over abuse scandal

Earlier, the 81-year-old pontiff said: "I cannot begin to express the pain and shame that I feel over the irreparable harm caused to children by some ministers of the church," vowing to commit to ensure the abuses would never happen again.
Francis made those comments during a visit to President Michelle Bachelet's official Moneda Palace residence, drawing applause from pilgrims watching on giant screens in a Santiago park where he later celebrated an open-air mass for some 400,000 people.
But the pope did not receive a universal welcome, with scuffles breaking out between riot police and demonstrators in the vicinity of O'Higgins Park.
Police used armored vehicles to fire water cannons at the demonstrators and arrested several people, bundling them into vans.
Many of the demonstrators chanted "pedophile accomplices" as they approached the park.

A man dressed as the pope and two other people dressed as nuns unfurled a banner from the balcony of a nearby building that read: "Francis, accomplice of pedophile crimes."
Under the 1973-1990 Augusto Pinochet military dictatorship, the church was admired for its human rights advocacy role. But today, Chile is the Latin American country most critical of the Vatican.
Francis's visit - his first to Chile as pope - has been overshadowed by a report outlining the depth of sexual abuse in the local church, and his appointment of a bishop who many here believe covered up the country's most prominent sex abuse scandal.
The US-based NGO Bishop Accountability said ahead of the visit that almost 80 Roman Catholic clergy members had been accused of sexually abusing children in Chile since 2000.

Scandals overshadow pope's meetings in Chile

For some victims, the pope's request for forgiveness did not go far enough.
"We need concrete actions that the pope has not taken with the Chilean church," said Juan Carlos Claret, spokesman for a lay association in the southern city of Osorno.
Claret's group is demanding Francis remove Osorno bishop Juan Barros, whom he appointed in 2015, despite Barros's ties to a disgraced pedophile priest Fernando Karadima.
The pope later told representatives of Chile's clergy at a packed Santiago cathedral that he was "attentive to what you are doing to respond to this great and painful evil."
The pain was shared not only by victims and their families, he told them, but also by the clergy.
"I know that at times you have been insulted in the metro or walking in the street, and that by going around in clerical attire in many places, you pay a heavy price," Francis said.
"Have the courage to ask to be pardoned," he summoned them.
In his homily at the mass, where the congregation included Mapuche women in traditional dress, Francis called for the rights and culture of indigenous people to be respected, so they could be treated as "a worthy child of this country."

Earlier, he said in his speech to officials that indigenous peoples "can make a great contribution" to the environmental protection of the planet.
"We can learn from them that there is no true development in a population that turns its back on the earth and everyone and everything around it," he said.

80 priests accused of child sex abuse ahead of Pope's Chile visit

However, there was no specific mention of the Mapuche, with whom the pope is scheduled to meet Wednesday during a visit to Temuco, over 600 kilometers (370 miles) south of the capital Santiago.
Three Catholic churches were vandalized on Tuesday, including one in the Araucania region, where most of the Mapuche people live.
In a first for Francis, he visited a women's prison, telling inmates at Santiago's San Joaquin Female Penitentiary that "losing our freedom does not did not mean losing our dreams and hopes."
About 100 inmates welcomed him with songs and excited applause, some of them with their small children.

A jail sentence must offer opportunities for personal growth, he said.
"Public order must not be reduced to stronger security measures, but should be concerned primarily with preventive measures, such as work, education, and greater community involvement."

A hassle-free procedure can make your eye sight as good as new.

The days of struggling with spectacles and contact lenses may be behind us. Lasik — a short and painless procedure can now restore your vision to its original crystal clear form. But here are some things you need to know:

The preparation

The approved age of the patient for this procedure is 18 years and above. However, it is important that the eye sight number has stabilised for over one year, which ensures that the number will not return. In some cases, the eyesight weakens again over the years because of poor care or ageing but another minor procedure can be performed to correct that.

The patient is also asked to stop wearing contact lenses usually for one and in some cases six weeks prior to the surgery. “Contact lenses in a normal case should be completely avoided for the last five days before the surgery,” advises Dr Aziz Ali, an ophthalmologist at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital in Karachi. Some contact lenses can hinder the oxygen absorption of the cornea which results in an increase in the size of the blood vessels. Even with modern RGP and soft silicone oxygen-absorbing lenses, the patients are advised to not over wear them.

This surgery can be a bit costly, ranging from Rs40,ooo to Rs50,000 so the patient needs to be aware about it beforehand.

Post-operative care

Dr Jamshed Anklesaria recommends three days of complete rest without leaving the house, minimal use of the phone and watching television. “It is important to stay indoors because dirt and dust which is very typical of Pakistani weather can cause infections and sunlight can stress or harm the sight. Also it is important to make sure to never rub your eyes, splash water or move around an area where you can bump into people and hurt your eyes. Even at home.”

Anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and lubricating eye drops are given to the patients to put in the weeks that follow and the patients are asked to rest. Sleep goggles are also sometimes given to prevent rubbing your eyes during sleep.

The operative procedure

1. Creating the flap: A soft corneal suction ring is applied to keep the eye in place after which a flap is created using a mechanical microkeratome or a femtosecond laser. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back, revealing the stroma, the middle section of the cornea. The process of lifting and folding back of the flap can sometimes be uncomfortable.

2. Laser remodeling: The revealed stroma is treated with a laser that vaporises the tissue in a finely controlled manner without damaging the adjacent stroma. No burning with heat or actual cutting is required to ablate the tissue.

3. Repositioning the flap: After the cornea is reshaped so that it can properly focus light onto the retina, the cornea flap is put back in place and the surgery is complete.

Risks

Patients usually associate starbursts, ghosting and halos with lasik. However, these are more closely related to pupil size and thanks to high advancement Lasik rarely causes this. These are all conditions that are related to the eye sight and are not corrected by glasses but rather by eye drops and minor procedures. Many times the patients have these conditions even before the surgery.

Noreen Mumtaz is a student at the Limkokwing University, Malaysia.
