Cunningham's comments on transgender athletes have prompted debate, including disagreement from her podcast co-host

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has become the centre of renewed debate after defending her views on transgender athletes in women's sport, with her comments drawing responses from political figures, her WNBA team and even her own podcast co-host.

During an interview with ESPN, Cunningham rejected suggestions that she holds extreme political views after being labelled "MAGA Barbie" by some social media users.

"I'm very much in the middle," Cunningham said. "I agree with things on both sides, disagree with things on both sides. And that's all I've ever said about my political beliefs. But people love to assume."

Addressing transgender athletes, Cunningham said she had been criticised for her position but insisted her views had been misrepresented.

"I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'" she said. "I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."

Before a game against the Connecticut Sun, Cunningham was asked about her remarks and replied, "I said what I said. I think it's kind of common sense."

The Indiana Fever later issued a statement, saying its players are "thoughtful adults with their own perspectives and voices, and those views are their own."

The organisation added, "We are committed to welcoming fans from every background and treating everyone with respect, and that's what guides us as an organization."

Cunningham's childhood friend and podcast co-host, West Wilson, publicly disagreed with her stance, arguing that the issue has been given disproportionate attention.

"Transgender athletes in American sports is such a borderline nonexistent issue that right-wingers have convinced a massive portion of people in our country that these people are a threat to sports in America when mathematically, that's not the case at all," Wilson said.

He added, "There is, like, 10 transgender athletes in all of the NCAA. I think there are unique questions that can be handled on individual bases, but to allow this to take our attention from housing, healthcare, wars, all the other actual harmful s—- in our country is dumb."

Wilson's remarks also generated debate online, with supporters and critics challenging his argument.

The discussion comes amid broader political and legal debate in the United States over transgender participation in women's sports, including recent court rulings and policy changes that have brought the issue into the national spotlight.

At SDCC, Marvel announced Jonsson's casting as T'Challa's son in 'Black Panther 3' which is set to release in 2028

Marvel Studios' decision to cast David Jonsson as the next Black Panther has generated mixed reactions across social media, with fans divided over the future of one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most iconic characters.

The online response came following the studio's announcement at San Diego Comic-Con.

During the Hall H presentation, director Ryan Coogler confirmed that Jonsson, known for Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk, will portray the adult son of T'Challa in Black Panther 3.

The character was first introduced as a young child during the closing moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and is set to inherit the Black Panther mantle when the film is released on December 15, 2028.

The announcement quickly sparked debate online, with fans expressing a range of opinions about Marvel's casting choice.

Many welcomed Jonsson's selection, praising his recent performances and describing him as a strong fit for the role.

One fan wrote, “David Jonsson as T’Challa Jr is such great news, absolutely amazing actor.”

Another described the casting as “inspired casting”, while several others pointed to Jonsson's performance in The Long Walk as evidence that he was ready to lead a major Marvel film.

Others, however, said they had expected Damson Idris to take on the role instead.

“I thought it was going to be Damson Idris,” one fan commented.

Another added, “I wanted Damson Idris as T’Challa, but David Jonsson will be really good too.”

A separate group questioned Marvel's broader creative direction, arguing that the studio should have recast T'Challa rather than introducing an adult version of his son.

“Just give me T’Challa… there is 0 reason to not recast at this point. No actor is bigger than the role,” one social media user wrote.

Another said, “Bring back T’Challa or no dice.”

Some fans also raised questions about the timeline, noting that T'Challa's son was introduced as a young child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and wondering how the character would now be portrayed as an adult.

Marvel has not publicly addressed the online discussion surrounding the casting.

The announcement nevertheless marks a significant new chapter for the Black Panther franchise as the series continues following the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020.

The film earned nearly $26 million on Friday and is expected to reach $84.5 million across the weekend

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is on course to deliver the biggest second weekend of the director's career at the North American box office, with early estimates projecting an $84.5 million haul.

According to reports, the Universal Pictures epic earned nearly $26 million on Friday and is expected to reach $84.5 million across the weekend.

If the projection holds, it will surpass the previous second-weekend record for a Nolan film, set by The Dark Knight, which earned $75.1 million during its second weekend in 2008.

Premium formats continue to drive the film's performance, with IMAX, premium large formats and 70mm screenings accounting for 58% of second-weekend ticket sales, up from 53% during its opening weekend. IMAX alone contributed 29% of the total, while premium large formats represented 22%.

Deadline also reported that The Odyssey has become the highest-grossing film ever at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles when combining current sales and advance bookings through its fifth week. The film has generated $2.48 million at the historic cinema, surpassing the previous record held by Oppenheimer, which earned $2.38 million.

Audience data suggests the film continues to attract broad interest. Men accounted for 52% of viewers during the second weekend, compared with 59% on opening weekend, while 76% of the audience remained aged over 25.

PostTrak surveys also showed high recommendation scores, with 84% of male viewers and 82% of female viewers saying they would recommend the film.

With a projected domestic total of $283.8 million by the end of its second weekend, The Odyssey remains comfortably ahead of competing releases.

Disney's Moana is expected to finish second with $10.8 million, while Toy Story 5 is projected to earn $10 million in its sixth weekend.

Among new releases, the Broadway film capture Hadestown is forecast to open between $8 million and $9 million, while IFC's Motor City is expected to debut with approximately $1.8 million. Nicolas Winding Refn's Her Private Hell is projected to open with around $625,000.

Industry observers say The Odyssey's continued momentum highlights the sustained demand for premium cinema experiences, particularly for large-scale releases designed for IMAX and 70mm exhibition.

The Japanese macaque marked his first birthday as thousands of supporters sent cards and visited his zoo

Japanese macaque Punch celebrated his first birthday on Sunday after capturing the hearts of millions online with his story of resilience and recovery.

Visitors gathered at Ichikawa City Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Chiba Prefecture to mark the occasion.

Punch became an internet sensation after videos showed him clinging to a plush orangutan toy for comfort after being abandoned by his mother and initially rejected by other monkeys in his troop.

The zoo began sharing updates about his progress on social media in February, with the hashtag #HangInTherePunch attracting a global following.

Zoo official Takashi Yasunaga said Punch has made significant progress over the past year.

“He is less and less turning to the orangutan doll. He is communicating with other animals and playing with other baby monkeys,” Yasunaga said.

“He is building his position as a member of the group.”

Punch reportedly received around 2,500 birthday cards and messages from supporters in Japan and overseas. The messages are being displayed as part of a special birthday exhibition, alongside videos documenting his first year.

Punch's popularity has also transformed the zoo, which has seen visitor numbers increase from a few hundred people a day to several thousand. The zoo has received numerous emails and phone calls from supporters, while also facing criticism over Punch's care.

His fame has brought unexpected challenges, including an incident in May when American YouTubers entered the monkey enclosure and another in June when someone reportedly aimed a laser pointer at the animals.

The zoo has also benefited financially from Punch's popularity, raising ¥58 million (about $350,000) in donations by mid-July. The funds have been used to install a new air-conditioning system, improving conditions for the animals.

“Thanks to Punch’s popularity, the entire group (of monkeys) and the entire zoo have benefited from improved conditions,” Yasunaga said.

Visitors travelled from across Japan and abroad to celebrate the young monkey's birthday.

“Punch was all over TikTok. Videos just kept coming up. He’s just so cute. And my girlfriend loves him. I love him,” American tourist Sarren Eilers said.

Local visitor Junko Hara praised Punch's determination, saying, “He just doesn’t get discouraged. I support that resilience of his and watching him really cheers me up too.”

Another supporter, Yukie Mibayashi, added, “People all around the world are supporting Punch, so I want to tell him, ‘Everyone’s watching you. Keep going!’”

The rapper's 14-year-old nephew Seven accidentally shot his 12-year-old sister Lyric Shirley before committing suicide

Rapper 21 Savage is mourning the death of his teenage relative, Seven Shirley, after the 14-year-old died following an accidental shooting that seriously injured his younger sister, according to the family.

According to the family's account, Seven accidentally shot his 12-year-old sister, Lyric Shirley, in the neck at a home in Stockbridge, Georgia, on July 22. Family members said Seven later died by suicide.

Before the children were publicly identified, 11Alive reported that a 14-year-old boy had been found dead from a gunshot wound and that a 12-year-old girl had been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The family said Lyric has undergone three operations on her neck and vocal cords and remains in hospital. They have not confirmed when she is expected to be discharged.

Seven's grandmother, Sharon Smith, who said she had raised him since he was 11 months old, spoke about what she believes may have led to his actions.

"Just that fast, that boy had made the decision to kill himself," Smith said.

She added, "He probably sat up there and thought, 'I'm finna go to jail, they're going to ridicule me, everybody is going to be doing this and that and this, and this and that, and he couldn't take it.'"

Smith also questioned how Seven obtained the firearm, saying, "Something needs to be done about that person who sold that gun because if he would have never bought that gun, this would have never happened."

The family revealed they are also grieving another recent loss after Seven's 13-year-old cousin, DeMarcus Shirley, was killed in a drive-by shooting earlier this month.

21 Savage, whose real name is Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, shared a tribute to Seven on Instagram Stories by posting a photograph of the teenager wearing one of his signature diamond chains. The rapper wrote, "Remember when you were a baby," alongside several broken heart emojis.

In a family statement shared with 11Alive, relatives asked for privacy while preparing for Seven's funeral and requested continued prayers for Lyric's recovery.

They also urged the community to help "stop the illegal sale and access of firearms to minors and do everything we can to protect our children."

Gilson died in an alleged murder-suicide weeks after posting allegations against her estranged husband

Influencer Sara Gilson was killed in an alleged murder-suicide involving her estranged husband less than two weeks after accusing him of being a paedophile in a TikTok video.

According to authorities, Gilson, 43, and Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, 48, were found dead with gunshot wounds at Gilson's home in Owasso, Oklahoma, on July 23.

Police said Gilson was fatally shot by Duffey, who then shot himself. A child living at the home reportedly made the emergency call that led officers to the scene.

On July 11, Gilson shared a TikTok video following a popular documentary-themed trend. The text on the video read, “Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon to be ex husband who I just found out is a pedophile.”

The caption added, “I wish I was joking. #plottwist #netflix #documentary.”

Court records reviewed by People show Gilson had previously sought protective orders against Duffey in 2021.

Those cases were dismissed after she did not attend the hearings. On June 10 this year, she filed for an emergency protective order, alleging Duffey had a firearm, threatened suicide and “went on the run”.

The order required him to leave the family home and remain at least 100 yards away from her. It was later extended until August 24.

Gilson worked as a hairstylist and built a following as a TikTok influencer, where she sold clothes and jewelry.

The same day, a separate protective order was filed on behalf of a 15-year-old girl who had played on a youth basketball team coached by Duffey.

According to court filings, the girl's mother alleged he kissed and touched her daughter, sent her messages, invited her to his hotel room during a tournament and offered her money “to keep her quiet”.

No criminal conviction had been reported in relation to the allegations against Duffey at the time of publication.

Reynolds has not yet been officially announced as part of the film although reports and fan speculation have continued

Ryan Reynolds surprised fans with an in-character appearance as Deadpool during Marvel Studios' Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, adding to ongoing speculation about whether the anti-hero will appear in Avengers: Doomsday.

As the cast and filmmakers behind the upcoming Marvel film took to the stage, Reynolds emerged from the audience wearing Deadpool's grey costume, inspired by the character's look in the X-Force comics but not yet seen on the big screen.

Introducing himself as "Ricky", Reynolds joked that he was "cosplaying hard" before asking Paul Rudd, "First question is for Mr. Paul Rudd. Where is Thor, and why was he crying?"

The question referenced a scene from Deadpool & Wolverine in which Chris Hemsworth's Thor appears to cradle a dying Deadpool.

Rudd responded with a joke of his own, saying, "He’s a Wrexham fan?", referring to the Welsh football club co-owned by Reynolds. Reynolds replied, "You know goddamn well why he was crying."

Turning his attention to Avengers: Doomsday, Reynolds asked, "This seems like an awfully expensive way to announce a film. When do you start filming?"

Robert Downey Jr., who is set to portray Doctor Doom after previously playing Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, answered, "It’s in the can, bro. Look around you. Did you bump your head?"

A disappointed Deadpool then asked whether there would be "no additional photography, no overages, hot costs — maybe last minute additions?" before concluding, "No further questions. Happy Hogan, fetch the Audi. We’re leaving."

Reynolds has not been officially announced as part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, although reports and fan speculation have continued following the success of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Earlier this month, the actor also confirmed that another Deadpool film is planned.
