Education set to get record allocation; no new taxes planned

The Balochistan provincial government has finalised its budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, which will be presented before the provincial assembly on June 17.

Provincial Finance Minister Shoaib Nosherwani is scheduled to present the budget document and deliver the traditional budget speech during the assembly session.

According to the Finance Department, the upcoming budget will once again be a surplus and tax-free document, with its total volume expected to reach Rs1,200 billion.

Sources in the department said education has been given the topmost priority, with an allocation of more than Rs150 billion, the largest education budget in the province's history. The substantial funding aims to improve the quality of schools, colleges, and universities across Balochistan and launch new educational projects.

The budget will also include salary increases for government employees in line with the federal government's approach. Officials said appropriate relief will be provided in salaries, allowances, and pensions to help ease the burden of inflation on provincial employees.

Development programmes, particularly in health, water supply, roads, and infrastructure, will also receive significant attention. In line with its policy of maintaining a surplus budget, the government has decided against introducing any new taxes or additional exemptions.

Senior officials of the Finance Department confirmed that the budget document has been finalised. During his speech on June 17, Minister Nosherwani is expected to present a comprehensive review of the province's development programmes, last year's achievements, and targets for the coming year.

The people of Balochistan, particularly students, government employees, and ordinary citizens, are awaiting the budget announcement with great anticipation.

Experts believe that the heavy investment in education under the Rs1,200 billion package will play a crucial role in strengthening the province's human resources and long-term development.

Cautions that rapidly melting glaciers, possible glacial lake outburst floods could cause heavy water flows

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday issued an alert warning of heavy rainfall, strong winds and potential flood-like conditions across the northern and upper parts of the country from June 16 to 20.

According to the advisory, a westerly weather system is expected to affect the region during this period, bringing thunderstorms, gusty winds and scattered rainfall, with hail possible at some locations.

In Punjab, thunderstorms and rain are likely in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Talagang, Mandi Bahauddin, Sargodha, Gujar Khan, Gujrat, Jhelum, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Faisalabad, Khushab, Jhang, Dera Ghazi Khan, Kasur, Okara, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan.

In Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), rain and thunderstorms are expected in Skardu, Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Hunza, Ghanche, Shigar, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Bagh, Kotli, Poonch, Hattian, Mirpur and Bhimber.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) is also likely to receive widespread rain with thunderstorms in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Swabi, Mardan, Charsadda, Peshawar, Kohat, Parachinar, Karak, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and North Waziristan.

In Sindh, scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected in Jacobabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Khairpur, Dadu, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Shaheed Benazirabad and Nawabshah.

The NDMA warned that between June 16 and 19, rainfall combined with rising temperatures may trigger flood-like situations in parts of K-P, AJK and G-B.

It further cautioned that rapidly melting glaciers and possible glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) could cause heavy water flows in streams and rivers originating from mountainous regions.

— FFDLahore (@ffdlhr) June 16, 2026

Areas at risk of GLOF include Hassanabad, Shishper, Gulkin, Gulmit, Passu, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu and Shigar, the advisory said.

The authority also warned of possible landslides and closure of link roads in hilly areas due to rainfall and unstable conditions.

NDMA has directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert in sensitive mountainous and highway regions. Tourists and travellers have been advised to check weather and road conditions before travelling to northern areas.

Body of Malik Shingal Khan Tareen recovered from Zarghoon Ghar

Prominent political and tribal leader from Balochistan's Harnai district, Malik Shingal Khan Tareen, also locally known as Malik Sher Gul Tareen, has been confirmed dead 15 days after his abduction, family sources said.

His body was recovered from the mountainous Zarghoon Ghar area, triggering widespread grief and anger across the region.

The incident occurred on May 21, when unidentified armed men abducted Tareen near the Mangi area on the Harnai-Quetta Road in Ziarat district while he was travelling for routine work.

The abductors also took along SHO Masood Ahmad Khan Panizai of Mangi Police Station, Constable Ashraf Khan, and Constable Javed Panizai. The three police personnel were released from the Zarghoon Ghar area on June 3 and safely returned to their homes.

Family members, including Tareen's brother Ubaid Tareen and Manzoor Ahmad Tareen, confirmed his death through social media and local media outlets.

A resident of the Nakas area, Malik Shingal Khan Tareen served as district general secretary of the Pakistan Peoples Party in Harnai and was widely recognised as an active political worker and influential tribal elder.

Expressing deep sorrow over his killing, local PPP leaders, including Harnai chapter president Muhammad Yaseen Tareen, condemned the incident. Provincial ministers, political parties, and tribal elders described the abduction and killing as an act of terrorism and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.

"Our brother was a simple, hardworking and people-friendly person who always worked for peace and development in the area," a family member said. "His abduction and killing is a tragedy not only for our family but for the entire Harnai district."

Condolence gatherings have begun across the region, while a large number of people attended his funeral prayers and burial, paying tribute to his services.

The incident has once again highlighted the deteriorating security situation in Balochistan. Residents have expressed concern over the occurrence of such a major incident in the sensitive Mangi area despite the presence of security forces.

No official progress has yet been announced regarding the identification or arrest of the abductors. The government of Balochistan and the leadership of the PPP are being urged to ensure justice and implement effective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Joint review committee to be formed for comprehensive legislation focusing on acid regulation, victim protection

The Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) decided on Monday to accelerate legislation aimed at preventing acid attacks in Balochistan and ensuring justice and rehabilitation for victims.

The development came after Dr Mahnoor was critically injured when an attacker allegedly threw acid on her while she was on duty in the surgical ward of Quetta's Civil Sandeman Hospital last week. The suspect fled the scene but was later killed in an exchange of fire with police.

A meeting of the caucus, presided over by Balochistan Assembly Deputy Speaker and WPC Chairperson Ghazala Gola, was held today in the Provincial Assembly’s Committee Room. The session focused on measures to curb acid violence, strengthen relevant laws, and support affected individuals.

Attendees included WPC members Raheela Hamid Khan Durrani, Shahida Rauf, Farah Azeem Shah, Kulsoom Niaz, Salma Kakar, and Shahnaz Umrani; Justice (retd) Kailash Nath Kohli; representatives from the Home and Law departments; officials from UN Women; and Balochistan Assembly Special Secretary Abdul Rehman.

During the meeting, Justice (retd) Kailash Nath Kohli provided a detailed briefing on Pakistan’s existing legal framework concerning acid attacks and related crimes. He also updated participants on a proposed provincial law drafted in 2016.

Representatives from the Home Department presented official statistics, revealing that seven cases of acid throwing had been registered in Balochistan since 2021, with five cases disposed of in 2022.

After thorough deliberations, participants unanimously agreed to constitute a joint review committee. The committee will examine the existing draft law and incorporate stronger provisions related to the regulation of acid sales and use, protection and rehabilitation of victims, compensation mechanisms, and effective institutional responses.

The meeting's members also recommended that the next consultative session invite representatives from the Departments of Industries, Health, Prosecution, Women Development, Law, senior lawyers, the home department, and the police to offer their input for making the proposed legislation more robust.

Participants further decided to revisit the composition of the board to be established under the proposed bill, ensuring representation from the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus and other relevant stakeholders.

It was also suggested that members of the relevant Standing Committee on Home Affairs be included in future consultations to build broader consensus and improve coordination.

The participants emphasised that a comprehensive and strong provincial law was essential to effectively prevent acid attacks, regulate the sale and use of acid and other hazardous chemicals, hold perpetrators accountable, and provide meaningful support and rehabilitation to survivors.

Concluding the session, Chairperson Ghazala reaffirmed the WPC’s commitment to continuing its efforts for the enactment of laws that protect vulnerable segments of society, promote justice, and ensure strong safeguards against all forms of violence in Balochistan.

The injured doctor was a postgraduate trainee. She was provided initial medical treatment and later was taken to Karachi through a special air ambulance to ensure access to advanced medical treatment. According to doctors, approximately 35% of her face and body had sustained burn injuries.

The incident triggered a strong reaction from the Young Doctors Association (YDA), which described the attack as a serious security lapse.

The association claimed that the suspect worked as a private lift operator at the hospital and alleged that the attack was carried out with the intention of killing the doctor.

YDA leaders demanded the immediate transfer of the health secretary and the medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, calling for a transparent judicial inquiry into the incident.

The association criticised the government for what it described as inadequate security measures in public hospitals and announced a strike in response to the incident.

“This attack reflects a complete failure of security arrangements in hospitals,” the association said, urging authorities to fix responsibility and ensure accountability.

Experts believe oil leaked from a passing vessel or tanker operating along international shipping routes

A large-scale oil contamination incident has affected a vast stretch of Gwadar's western coastline, raising serious concerns about environmental degradation and its potential impact on marine life and coastal communities.

The pollution has spread across approximately 20 kilometres of shoreline, coating beaches with thick layers of crude oil. The incident has alarmed environmentalists and local residents alike, particularly after several marine animals, including sea turtles, were found dead along the affected coastline.

As reports of the contamination emerged, Gwadar Deputy Commissioner Naqeebullah Kakar directed authorities to launch immediate response efforts. Teams from the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) were dispatched to assess the extent of the damage and investigate the source of the spill.

Municipal workers have also begun clearing oil deposits from beaches to mitigate further damage to the coastal environment. Cleanup operations are underway in several affected areas as authorities work to contain the pollution.

Officials have yet to determine the exact source of the spill, but preliminary findings suggest it may have originated from maritime activity in regional waters.

Experts believe the oil may have leaked from a passing cargo vessel or tanker operating along international shipping routes in the Arabian Sea. Strong winds and sea currents may have subsequently carried the pollutant to Gwadar's coastline, where it accumulated along beaches and coastal habitats.

Authorities are conducting further assessments to determine responsibility and establish the full extent of the incident.

Environmental specialists have warned that the spill poses a significant threat to the Makran coast's fragile ecosystem. Oil contamination can severely affect marine species, coastal vegetation, fish breeding grounds, and migratory wildlife.

The discovery of dead sea turtles has heightened concerns about the immediate impact on biodiversity in the region. Experts caution that additional marine species could be affected if cleanup efforts do not proceed quickly.

The incident has also created uncertainty for Gwadar's fishing community, which depends heavily on coastal resources for its income and livelihood.

Local fishermen worry that contaminated waters could reduce fish populations, damage fishing equipment, and disrupt daily operations. Many families in the area rely entirely on the fishing industry and fear prolonged environmental damage could affect their livelihoods.

Community representatives have urged authorities to accelerate cleanup efforts and provide support to affected fishermen if the contamination continues to spread.

District officials have reiterated their commitment to restoring the affected coastline and minimizing ecological damage. According to local authorities, all available resources are being utilized to manage the situation and protect sensitive coastal zones.

Environmental experts, however, stress that recovery will require more than immediate cleanup operations. They are calling for comprehensive marine surveys, continuous environmental monitoring, and stricter oversight of shipping activities near Pakistan's coastline to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The oil spill has once again highlighted the vulnerability of Balochistan's coastal environment and the need for stronger safeguards to protect its marine resources, wildlife, and fishing communities.

Facility treats over 48,000 patients in early 2026, offers free services

The China-aided Pak-China Friendship Hospital in Gwadar is emerging as a key healthcare facility in Balochistan, treating 48,656 patients in the first two months of 2026, according to a report by CGTN.

The report stated that the hospital, which is a flagship project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is currently handling around 1,200 patients daily, significantly improving access to healthcare in the region.

CPEC is a flagship infrastructure and energy initiative linking Pakistan and China, aimed at boosting trade, connectivity, and regional development. It includes highways, railways, energy projects, and industrial zones, strengthening the Pak-China strategic partnership.

During a recent visit to the hospital, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal said the success of CPEC should be measured not just through infrastructure but also through improvements in human development, particularly health and education.

Managed by the Indus Hospital and Health Network, the facility provides a wide range of services, including diagnostics, treatment and inpatient care, free of cost.

Since its establishment, the hospital has treated over 650,000 patients, reducing the need for residents to travel to other cities for specialised care. Patients from across Balochistan, and even neighbouring areas, are now seeking treatment in Gwadar.

The project has also contributed to local employment, with more than 80% of the hospital’s 487 staff members recruited from the surrounding community.

Looking ahead, the hospital plans to expand its services from 15 to 25 departments and establish a School of Medical Technology, with future plans for a medical college and nursing school.

Authorities deploy Rescue 1122, NHA teams, and heavy machinery to clear floodwaters and reopen the highway

The busy national highway from Zhob to Dera Ismail Khan was brought to a standstill late Sunday night when floodwaters swept across the road. Heavy overnight rainfall caused dry streams in the area to overflow, sending torrents onto the highway.

Gundi Ashiq, already considered a naturally vulnerable section, was completely submerged by the intensity of the water. Eyewitnesses reported that the fast-moving waves reached vehicle tires, leaving several stranded.

The scene was chaotic: long queues of buses, trucks, cars, and motorcycles came to a halt. Passengers got out of their vehicles, checking on each other; children cried, women were distressed, and elderly passengers sat exhausted. The air was filled with the smell of rain, the roar of rushing water, and anxious chatter.

One affected passenger, Ghulam Muhammad, told The Express Tribune, “We were heading to Dera Ismail Khan early in the morning with our whole family when suddenly we saw a wall of water ahead. We have been stuck here for hours. The children’s food is finished, and our mobile batteries are dead. Only Allah can help us now.”

Meanwhile, a female passenger said, “I was taking my daughter to the doctor. What should I do now? The road is blocked, and there is no one to help.”

District administration officials, the National Highway Authority, and Rescue 1122 teams immediately reached the site. Heavy machinery, bulldozers, and labour teams were deployed to clear the water and reopen the highway as quickly as possible.

Authorities stated that the situation is under constant monitoring, and efforts are underway to restore traffic by noon. However, the water level remains high, making vehicle movement currently impossible.

Officials strongly urged passengers not to travel on this route without prior confirmation and to use alternative roads. This national highway serves as the main link between Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and its closure is affecting not only the general public but also commercial transport, trucks, and daily trade.

The administration confirmed that road-clearing operations are progressing rapidly, and updates will be issued as soon as the highway reopens.

Travellers are advised to exercise extreme caution during the rainy season, check weather forecasts, avoid flood-prone areas, and stay updated. Safe travel is your responsibility.

Says various parts of Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa to see rain with thunderstorms

The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Wednesday warned of nationwide thunderstorms and rainfall over the next 12 to 24 hours.

According to an advisory issued by the authority, a system of western winds entering from the southwestern belt of Balochistan is likely to affect most regions, bringing rain accompanied by strong winds and gusty storms.

The NDMA cautioned that ongoing rainfall may lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock and Chakwal. Residents in vulnerable localities have been advised to remain alert and take precautionary measures to minimise potential damage.

Rain with thunderstorms and strong winds is expected in Islamabad and several cities of Punjab, including Murree, Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Gujrat, Sialkot, Lahore, Mianwali and Mandi Bahauddin over the next 12 to 24 hours. Rainfall is also likely in Khushab, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Faisalabad, Kasur, Okara, Narowal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan.

The advisory stated that various parts of Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) are expected to experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms, dust storms and strong winds, with chances of hailstorms at isolated locations.

In view of the anticipated downpour, the NDMA has issued an alert for possible flooding in several districts of K-P and Balochistan. Flash floods are forecast in Balochistan, particularly in Turbat, Kech, Gwadar, Khuzdar, Zhob and Lasbela.

In K-P, flood-like conditions are expected in Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Parachinar, Peshawar, Mardan and Swabi. Authorities have advised precautionary measures in vulnerable areas.

Snowfall is also expected in the upper and mountainous regions of Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir and K-P during the next 12 to 24 hours.

Rain with thunderstorms and strong winds is likely in several districts of K-P, including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad and Haripur. Dust storms, strong winds and rain are also expected in Swabi, Charsadda, Mardan, Nowshera, Kohat, Karak, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan.

NDMA also forecast rainfall in parts of G-B and Azad Kashmir, including Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Astore, Diamer, Ghizer, Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Rawalakot, Haveli and Neelum Valley.

In Balochistan, rain is expected in Quetta, Zhob, Ziarat, Kalat, Qila Saifullah, Qila Abdullah, Pishin, Barkhan, Sibi, Dera Bugti, Khuzdar, Awaran, Washuk, Panjgur, Turbat, Gwadar and Lasbela during the same period.

Rain with thunderstorms is also expected in Sindh cities including Kashmore, Jacobabad, Sukkur, Shahdadkot, Khairpur and Larkana.

The NDMA warned that strong winds, lightning and hailstorms may damage weak structures, trees and power lines. Rainfall could make roads slippery and disrupt traffic flow, while snowfall in mountainous areas is likely to affect travel.

Continuous rainfall in hilly regions may heighten the risk of landslides. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, drive cautiously and follow official weather advisories. During strong winds and storms, the public has been urged to stay away from trees, fragile structures and installations.

The authority also advised tourists and travellers heading to northern areas to be cautious and check weather and road conditions in advance, while encouraging citizens to obtain timely updates through its official mobile application, “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert.”

Meanwhile, the NDMA has directed all provincial and district administrations to remain on high alert and take necessary measures to cope with the expected weather situation.

125 shopkeepers have been arrested and 37 shops sealed during enforcement operations

Escalating inflation has deepened the woes of residents in the provincial capital, with sharp increases in the prices of essential meats placing an unbearable burden on middle and low-income families, especially during the holy month of Ramazan.

According to market sources, mutton prices have climbed from Rs2,200 per kilogram to as high as Rs2,500 per kg in recent days. Beef has risen from Rs1,400 to Rs1,600 per kg, while chicken meat has jumped from Rs550 to Rs640 per kg. These hikes come on top of already elevated costs for daily groceries, further straining household budgets at a time when demand for meat traditionally rises for iftar and sahar meals.

Residents expressed deep frustration, noting that everyday food items were already expensive before this latest surge. "The increase in meat and chicken prices has severely disrupted our family budgets during Ramazan," one local shopper told The Express Tribune. Many families are forced to cut back on protein-rich foods or opt for cheaper, less nutritious alternatives.

In response to widespread complaints of overcharging, the district administration has ramped up its crackdown on profiteers. Officials reported that 125 shopkeepers have been arrested and 37 shops sealed during enforcement operations aimed at curbing illegal price hikes.

Deputy Commissioner Quetta Mehrullah Badini emphasized zero tolerance for profiteering. "There will be no leniency toward those exploiting the public," he stated.

Repeated disruptions in Balochistan highlight deeper issues of governance

Mobile internet data services in Quetta have once again faced disruption, with authorities opting for a partial suspension rather than a complete shutdown.

The Balochistan government, which previously encountered strong public backlash over blanket internet bans, has introduced a new strategy: drastically reducing internet speed to the point where services are practically unusable.

Citizens across Quetta have expressed outrage, saying that mobile internet disruptions have become routine in the province. They argue that the practice not only hampers communication but also affects businesses, students, and professionals who rely heavily on stable connectivity.

Many residents complained that despite paying high fees for mobile data packages, they are unable to use the services effectively, leaving them at a financial loss.

Telecom companies have also come under fire. Users accuse them of charging heavy subscription fees while failing to provide uninterrupted service.

They point out that during a month-long suspension earlier this year, companies had promised to compensate customers by reactivating their packages.

However, residents say that no such relief has been implemented, further eroding trust between consumers and service providers. Observers note that repeated disruptions in Balochistan highlight deeper issues of governance and digital policy.

Group had been involved in a series of robberies, extortion; surrenders weapons, munitions to security forces

A group of 25 criminals, terrorists and looters led by Mirak Khan Chakrani operating in Balochistan have surrendered to Pakistani authorities. They have handed over a large cache of weapons and ammunition.

The group had been involved in a series of robberies and extortion activities across the region and surrendered after the efforts of security forces and brother of Balochistan's Chief Minister, Mir Aftab Bugti.

Chakrani, who previously held a prominent position within the group, turned himself in and also announced his decision to join the Chakrani Peace Force, aimed at countering extremist elements in the region.

This shift marks a key moment in the ongoing security efforts in Balochistan, which have been under focus due to increasing tensions in the region. The successful surrender is being seen as an important milestone in Operation Radd-ul-Fitna, a security initiative aimed at eliminating extremist violence in the area.

Operation Radd-ul-Fitna

Operation Radd-ul-Fitna has been a focal point of security operations in Balochistan, with security forces targeting various extremist and criminal elements across the province. The operation has garnered attention for its approach to dealing with militants and criminal networks that have been operating with relative impunity in Balochistan for years.

The initiative has focused on dismantling groups that are involved in insurgency and criminal activities. Security forces have reported that the operation has led to the apprehension of several key figures in terrorist organisations, as well as the significant reduction of organised criminal activities, including extortion and kidnapping for ransom.

The Balochistan IBOs (Intelligence-Based Operations) have continued to expand in scope, with officials indicating that more individuals associated with extremist factions are expected to surrender in the coming weeks. Despite challenges, the ongoing efforts have been aimed at reasserting control and restoring peace in the province.

A dispute over the rental of a vacant shop escalated into an armed clash in Kili Qadirabad, Nushki, on Monday morning, leaving four people dead, including three brothers, police said.

Police officials told The Express Tribune that an argument between two parties over the shop’s tenancy turned violent, resulting in the deaths of Babu Alam, Babarg and Zulqarnain Khan, sons of Dinar Khan Badini, at the scene.

From the opposing side, Sohail Ahmed, son of Muhammad Ayub Badini, was also shot dead, police said.

Locals told authorities that both parties were close relatives belonging to the same tribe and that the dispute had been ongoing for some time. Residents said the exchange of fire caused panic in the area, forcing people to remain indoors for several hours.

Police reached the site soon after the incident was reported and secured the area. The bodies were taken into custody and shifted to a hospital for post-mortem examination.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Nushki said FIRs would be registered against both sides, adding that raids were under way to arrest suspects involved in the shooting.

Police said the situation had been brought under control, with additional personnel deployed in the area to prevent further violence.

A local jirga has also intervened, appealing to both sides to exercise restraint. The jirga said it planned to convene a peace jirga to help resolve the long-running dispute alongside the legal process.

Residents expressed grief over the killings and urged the authorities to take effective measures for the timely resolution of tribal and property-related disputes.

Officials say incident caused by technical fault, lack of safety measures, which is commonly seen at such shops

Four people, including an 11-year-old boy, were injured on Sunday when an air compressor exploded at a puncture shop near Kalma Chowk in Sibi, officials said.

Officials said the compressor burst due to excessive pressure at the shop on Residency Road, sending metal parts across a wide area and damaging nearby shops and vehicles, triggering panic in the neighbourhood.

The injured were identified as shop owner Inayatullah Gashkori, his associate Safar Gashkori, Muhammad Ashraf Achakzai, and 11-year-old Muawiya Achakzai. Officials said all four are residents of Quetta who had stopped at the shop to repair a punctured tyre while returning from a religious gathering.

Rescue teams shifted the injured to Civil Hospital Sibi, where Medical Superintendent Dr Jahanzeb Baloch told Express News that all four were provided first aid and were in stable condition. He said treatment was ongoing and they were expected to be discharged soon.

Officials said preliminary investigations suggested the explosion was caused by a technical fault and inadequate safety measures. An inquiry has been initiated, and the shop owner is being questioned to help prevent similar incidents. Local residents have also called for stricter enforcement of safety standards at puncture shops and workshops.

The explosion initially raised concerns due to the prevailing law and order situation in Sibi. However, officials later confirmed that the incident was a technical accident, and residents expressed relief that no lives were lost

City has been divided into four towns: Zarghun, Chiltan, Sariab, Takto, contesting 642 general seats

The overdue local government elections in Quetta are scheduled for December 28, 2025. The Election Commission of Balochistan has completed all preparations, and election campaigns are underway across the city.

A total of 2,433 candidates are contesting 642 general seats across 172 union councils of the Quetta Metropolitan Corporation, which is administratively divided into four towns: Zarghun, Chiltan, Sariab, and Takatu.

Zarghun Town: 730 candidates contesting for 46 general seats

Chiltan Town: 500 candidates for 46 general seats

Sariab Town: 339 candidates for 38 general seats

Takatu Town: 804 candidates for 42 general seats

The most intense competition is expected in Takatu Town, where an average of 19 candidates are contesting each seat. Zarghun Town is also expected to witness tough contests.

On polling day, the Election Commission will set up 642 polling stations and 2,113 polling booths across the city, with CCTV cameras and additional personnel from the army and Frontier Corps deployed at sensitive polling stations.

Voter enthusiasm is reportedly high, with all major political parties actively campaigning, and a significant number of independent candidates who could influence results in several wards.

The elections will determine Quetta’s new mayor, deputy mayors, and councillors, who will oversee the city’s development and administration for a nine-month term.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday rejected Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti’s appeal to postpone the local government elections in Quetta, clarifying that the polls, pending since 2022, will be held as scheduled on December 28.

The commission has directed the provincial government to ensure comprehensive security and arrangements for the elections.

The provincial government has been ordered to provide full assistance to the ECP under Article 220 of the Constitution of Pakistan, which requires all federal and provincial authorities to support the commission, ensuring independent and fair elections.

In his appeal, CM Bugti cited the deteriorating law and order situation, internet shutdowns, and harsh weather, which he argued could reduce voter turnout.

ECP member Shah Muhammad Jatoi of Balochistan also submitted a dissenting note, expressing concern that severe weather and security conditions could lead to low voter turnout, and suggesting that the elections be postponed until conditions improve.

Report on border security to be sent to Chairman of Border Management Committee

Pakistan–Afghanistan border at Chaman remained closed on Saturday following a night of cross-border firing, leaving hundreds of travellers, traders and families stranded on both sides amid heightened security deployments

The Frontier Corps and other security units in Pakistan reinforced key crossing points after the exchange of fire with Afghan forces late Friday night. Afghan authorities also strengthened positions across the border in Spin Boldak, raising concerns among residents about a possible prolonged standoff.

Dozens of Afghan nationals waiting to return home were stuck at the Friendship Gate for hours, with some stranded for days due to the sudden closure. Many expressed concern over dropping temperatures and limited facilities.

“We were preparing to cross early in the morning, but the gate never opened. Families with children are suffering the most,” said a traveller at the terminal.

A detailed report on the security situation will be forwarded to the Chairman of the Border Management and Master Plan Committee, local sources said.

At least three civilians, including a woman, were injured during Friday night’s clashes that lasted several hours. Medical teams in Chaman have been treating the wounded and monitoring the situation closely.

On the night after the explosions in Kabul, Afghan Taliban forces, allegedly supported by elements of the TTP, launched attacks along multiple border sectors, including Chaman, Angoor Adda, Bajaur, Kurram, Dir, Chitral and Baramcha.

Earlier this year, clashes were reported along the border during a brief period of tension with Afghanistan. On October 8, tensions escalated after explosions in Kabul, reportedly linked to Pakistani airstrikes targeting TTP leaders.

At least 23 Pakistani soldiers were killed in the clashes, with Pakistan claiming over 200 Afghan fighters also died. The firing damaged the Pak-Afghan Friendship Gate, a key civilian crossing point. In response, Pakistan closed its border crossings, and on October 16 both sides agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire.

Chief Minister Bugti orders crackdown on banned terror groups, accelerates international pursuit

In a decisive move against terrorism, Balochistan Chief Minister Sardar Sarfraz Bugti has approved strict measures to dismantle banned terrorist networks operating both locally and abroad.

The high-level meeting, held at the Chief Minister's Secretariat, reviewed evidence linking foreign-based terrorist leaders to local facilitators, including call records and communication data.

According to an official statement, the government has resolved to tighten the noose around the heads, commanders, and operatives of outlawed organizations. A comprehensive list identifying more than 300 terrorists associated with groups such as the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), United Baloch Army (UBA), Baloch Raaji Group (BRG), and Lashkar-e-Balochistan has been compiled.

Chief Minister Bugti underscored the urgency of acting against every internal and external element involved in terrorism. "Those who have shed blood in Balochistan will not be allowed to hide anywhere in the world," he asserted. He stressed that the government has a responsibility to expose terrorist groups that operate under the guise of political entities.

Under new counter-terrorism laws, the Home Department has been directed to further activate the Provincial Action Plan's dedicated cell, ensuring that measures against those challenging the writ of the state enter a decisive phase.

"Balochistan will no longer fall prey to any foreign agenda. There will be zero tolerance against enemies of Pakistan and Balochistan, and every last facilitator will be pursued," Bugti added.

The meeting also approved accelerating the prosecution of cases against the leadership of banned outfits, while expediting the process for issuing Interpol Red Notices through coordination with federal Interior and Foreign Affairs ministries.

Law and order situation in the province has deteriorated rapidly this year. Last year, government imposed several new restrictions to maintain public safety and security in view of the deteriorating law and order situation.

The provincial home department announced a ban on pillion riding on motorcycles, covering faces at public places, the use of tinted glasses, and the operation of unregistered motorcycles across the province.

Officials stated that these measures have been taken with the approval of the provincial government, aiming to curb criminal activities and ensure peace in urban and rural areas.

The decision comes just days after the administration imposed a complete ban on political rallies and enforced Section 144 across the province to prevent large gatherings and potential law and order disturbances.

Authorities have urged citizens to fully cooperate with the administration and adhere to the new rules to avoid legal consequences.

The government emphasised that these restrictions are temporary and necessary for the stability of the province. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to strictly monitor compliance, particularly in high-risk areas, to prevent any untoward incidents.
