Renshaw continues prolific form with another impressive second innings 82

Matt Renshaw continued his prolific batting form before Australia declared on 314-6 at tea on the fourth day of the first Test on Monday, setting South Africa a daunting victory target of 421.

Australia held a 106-run first-innings lead after Renshaw scored 190, and the 30-year-old Queenslander again dominated the home bowlers at Kingsmead before a controversial caught-and-bowled dismissal by Keshav Maharaj ended his innings.

Renshaw looked disgusted after Maharaj appeared to juggle the catch before claiming it, with a television review confirming the dismissal.

Australia, who resumed on 33 without loss, scored 141 runs in a fast-moving morning session for the loss of four wickets and added another 140 in the afternoon as they sought to give themselves enough time to take the 10 wickets required for victory.

Opener Nic Maddinson, playing his first Test in a decade after scoring a duck in the first innings, struck 48 before being bowled by Anrich Nortje. Beau Webster remained unbeaten on 39, while captain Pat Cummins smashed four sixes in a whirlwind 32 off 12 balls.

Travis Head managed 11 and Marnus Labuschagne scored 37, but Labuschagne's 53-run partnership with Steve Smith, who made 27, helped Australia accelerate.

Smith was struck on the helmet by a Nortje bouncer while batting and underwent a lengthy on-field assessment before continuing his innings. He was later caught on the boundary off spinner Simon Harmer and did not take the field at the start of South Africa's second innings.

An Australian team spokesman said Smith was "undergoing further assessment", with an update expected later on Monday or on Tuesday. A concussion diagnosis could put him in doubt for the second Test in Gqeberha, which starts on Sunday.

South Africa were 60-1 at the time of filing, with Aiden Markram on 22 and David Bedingham unbeaten on 35. Josh Hazlewood dismissed Ryan Rickelton for two.

The hosts need a determined batting performance to avoid defeat and preserve captain Temba Bavuma's unbeaten record in 12 Tests as skipper.

Bad light curtailed play on each of the first three days and was again expected to threaten an early finish on Monday.

Farhan and Maaz lead hosts’ charge as visitors struggle to find form

In-form Pakistan will be desperately looking to complete a clean sweep when they face Sri Lanka in the third and final T20I at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

The match will start at 6pm PST.

Pakistan are in fine form, having won the first two matches convincingly. The hosts defeated the visitors by four wickets in the opening game before inflicting a comprehensive 82-run defeat on them in the second match on Sunday.

Pakistan have shown strength with both bat and ball, and the Green-shirts will be eager to maintain their momentum in the final game under captain Sahibzada Farhan, who has been in sublime touch.

Pakistan’s top order has performed well in both matches.

In the opening game, the middle order was tested, but a few unnecessary dismissals raised eyebrows as the hosts appeared well placed to chase down a target of 183. However, Pakistan completely outclassed Sri Lanka in the second match, restricting them to 133-7 while defending a formidable total of 216.

The 215-3 was Pakistan’s highest total at home and the second highest overall. The Green-shirts had amassed 232-6 against England in Nottingham on July 16, 2021, which is their record score.

Sahibzada Farhan and Maaz Sadaqat have been outstanding with the bat. The pair have built valuable partnerships for the second wicket in both matches and scored back-to-back half-centuries.

Farhan scored 89 and 73, while Maaz smashed 50 and 96, breathing new life into Pakistan’s top order.

Maaz, who also impressed in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), punished the Sri Lankan bowlers with aggressive stroke-play, making it difficult for them to contain him.

He played his natural game, and the freedom with which he batted reflected the confidence the team management has placed in the young Peshawar batsman.

Fakhar Zaman has been opening alongside Farhan. Although he has made promising starts, he has failed to bat deep into the innings. Known for his ability to score big, Fakhar has been unable to convert his starts into substantial scores. He will need to show greater application, which could further strengthen Pakistan’s batting line-up.

Hasan Nawaz performed well on Sunday, while it remains to be seen how Saim Ayub and Khawaja Nafay fare when given adequate opportunities. Khawaja scored the winning runs in Pakistan’s first T20I victory but has yet to be tested under significant pressure.

In the bowling department, Imran Randhawa has been particularly impressive. He consistently hits the right areas and has looked effective with the new ball. The all-rounder has taken five wickets in two matches, both of which were his T20I debut appearances.

“I bowled according to plan and achieved success,” Imran told reporters after Pakistan’s one-sided victory on Sunday.

Experienced leg-spinner Shadab Khan, however, has been unimpressive so far, raising questions about his role in the team.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s struggles in T20 cricket have continued.

After losing a T20I series 2-1 to the West Indies and suffering a 3-0 whitewash against England on recent away tours, Sri Lanka are now facing the prospect of a third consecutive series defeat.

Their batting has lacked firepower, while their bowling has struggled to contain Pakistan. Poor fielding has also contributed to their below-par performances, with dropped catches proving costly.

In the second match, Sri Lanka dropped Farhan when he was on 12, allowing the Pakistan captain to make the most of the reprieve.

Sri Lanka last toured Pakistan in October 2019 for a three-match T20I series, which they won 3-0.

This time, however, Pakistan appear poised to turn the tables.

Pakistan squad: Sahibzada Farhan (captain), Abdul Samad, Abrar Ahmed, Arafat Minhas, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Nawaz, Khawaja Nafay (wicket-keeper), Maaz Sadaqat, Mohammad Salman Mirza, Muhammad Imran Randhawa, Naseem Shah, Razaullah, Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan and Sufiyan Moqim.

Das hits 102 as Afghanistan face mammoth 479-run target

The wicket-keeper batsman Litton Das on Monday struck a splendid century as Bangladesh strengthened their grip on the one-off Test against Afghanistan, setting the hosts a daunting target of 479 runs on the fourth day at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Afghanistan reached 132-3 in their second innings at stumps and they still need 347 more runs to win the Test.

Das scored 102 off 117 balls as Bangladesh declared their second innings at 372-7 after resuming the day with their overnight score of 223-6. His seventh Test century featured 14 fours. He stayed for 182 minutes at the crease.

Bangladesh, who had scored 346 in their first innings, secured a 106-run lead after dismissing Afghanistan for 240. Their strong second innings performance left the visitors facing a formidable chase to win the Test.

Das shared a crucial 149-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who remained unbeaten on 52. Miraz faced 97 deliveries and struck five fours, helping Bangladesh build a commanding position before the declaration.

Afghanistan fast bowler Mohammad Saleem claimed two wickets for 69 runs, finishing with match figures of 6-151.

Chasing 479 for victory, Afghanistan endured an early setback when Abdul Malik fell for two. He edged a delivery from Ebadot Hossain to wicketkeeper Das, leaving the visitors under immediate pressure.

Shahidullah joined Sediqullah Atal at the crease but could not provide lasting support. He was dismissed for 19 by Hasan Mahmud, with Das completing the catch behind the stumps. Shahidullah's innings came off 19 balls and included four boundaries.

Afghanistan were struggling at 28-2 when the dismissal left them facing an uphill battle to save the match.

Captain Rahmat Shah then joined Atal and helped steady the innings. The pair put together an important 82-run partnership for the third wicket, offering Afghanistan some hope of resisting Bangladesh's attack.

However, Ebadot struck again to remove Rahmat, who scored 51 off 124 balls, including five fours and a six. His departure left Afghanistan at 110-3 and further increased the pressure on the visitors.

Atal and Hashmatullah Shahidi then batted cautiously to take Afghanistan to 132-3 at stumps, keeping their hopes alive heading into the final day.

Sediqullah Atal was batting on 35 and with him at the end was Hashmatullah Shahidi on 19.

Atal struck on six and one four from 126 balls while Shahidi hit two fours and six in his 27-ball unbeaten effort.

Ebadot Hossain got 2-32 while Hasan Mahmud claimed 1-31.

Afghanistan still require 347 runs to reach their target, while Bangladesh need seven wickets to secure victory. With three wickets down and a substantial deficit remaining, the hosts face a difficult task to turn the contest around.

Bangladesh will look to maintain their discipline with the ball on the final day, while Afghanistan must produce a determined batting effort to avoid defeat.

Trump has repeatedly insulted Omar, portraying Minnesota's Somali American community as a threat

US authorities conducted a predawn Monday raid on the Washington-area home of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar as part of an ongoing investigation, the Justice Department said.

The raid followed a criminal ‌fraud investigation into the Somali-born lawmaker's immigration paperwork, which was filled out by her late father when she was a child, Fox News Digital reported, citing unidentified sources.

"Today in the Washington, D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation," a Department of Justice spokesperson said in an email.

A representative for Omar did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The raid came a little more than three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, when President Donald Trump's Republicans will be trying to defend their thin majorities in the US Congress.

Omar has been a frequent target of political insults from Trump, who has cast the Somali American community as a threat to Minnesota in a burst of anti-Somali and anti-Muslim rhetoric.

'Creepy obsession'

Omar, an outspoken critic of Trump, has called his focus on her an "unhealthy and creepy obsession."

Last week, Trump called ‌Democratic candidate for US Senate from Michigan Abdul El-Sayed, who is Muslim, a "RADICAL Extremist" and "Terrorist Sympathizer" while offering support for the Republican candidate, Mike Rogers.

Civil rights advocates have criticized the Republican president's rhetoric towards minorities and immigrants, including when he previously called Somalis "garbage."

Trump in February said that Omar and Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, who is also Muslim, should be "institutionalized" and sent back to "where they came from." Both lawmakers had criticized Trump during his State of the Union address as he touted his administration's hard-line immigration crackdown and its immigration enforcement actions.

The progressive lawmaker has repeatedly said she and her family have faced death threats, which she attributes to "hateful political rhetoric" especially from Trump.

Last month, a Minnesota man who squirted vinegar on Omar was sentenced to one year and two months in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting a federal official. Anthony James Kazmierczak admitted to attacking Omar because he disagreed with her progressive political views.

In Sept, thieves broke into Cagnes-sur-Mer and escaped with two works by Renoir, abandoning two others as they fled

Two paintings by impressionist master Pierre-Auguste Renoir, stolen from a museum in southern France and later discovered hidden behind a wall, have sustained slight damage, prosecutors said on Monday.

In September, thieves broke into the museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer and escaped with two works by Renoir, abandoning two others as they fled.

The value of all four paintings had been estimated at nine million euros ($10 million).

On Friday, authorities announced that the two outstanding stolen works had been found.

They were a portrait titled "Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano" and a depiction of a woman at a well called "Young Woman at the Well".

Speaking to reporters in Paris, Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said the paintings were recovered last Thursday during a search of a home in the southern town of Clermont-l'Herault.

The discovery of the stolen works followed the arrest of six people, including a woman, last Wednesday, said Bessone.

"The paintings were hidden behind a solid cinderblock wall. They were completely undetectable," Bessone said.

"It was through interrogation work that investigators were able to get the receiver of the stolen goods to admit that he had indeed taken possession of the paintings."

A 29-year-old man seen as the main suspect was charged at the weekend after DNA evidence linked him to the theft.

The two paintings were "in relatively good condition", although "the two works showed signs of damage," Bessone said, speaking alongside the head of France's national judicial police, Christian Sainte.

The frame of "Young Woman at the Well" was slightly damaged, while "the canvas of 'Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano' had a tear," Bessone said.

The tear was located "on the dress" in the portrait, the prosecutor said, adding that both paintings "will require restoration work".

Latest heist

Culture Minister Catherine Pegard praised "the efficiency and determination of all those who made this outcome possible."

"Their commitment made it possible to recover these works in record time," the culture ministry said.

A spate of heists at French museums -- including at the Louvre -- has highlighted inadequate security in some cases and led to questions about whether criminal gangs see them as soft targets.

Crown jewels valued at around $100 million were stolen in broad daylight from the Louvre in Paris last year.

While the four suspected Louvre robbers were arrested, the jewels they are accused of grabbing in the seven-minute heist have still not been found.

Spaniard suffers a shocking defeat to Bergs in the third round

Carlos Alcaraz fell to Zizou Bergs in straight sets at the Shanghai Masters on Monday, interrupting the former world number one's in-form return to the professional Tour after being sidelined for months by injury.

The 39th-ranked Belgian beat the second-seeded Spanish star 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) in the third round to land the tournament's biggest upset yet, and will play either Tommy Paul or Valentin Vacherot next.

"It's a little disbelief and not feeling too much," Bergs, 27, said afterwards.

"You're just really in the moment, being focused on the points you have to play," he added.

"I'll be very happy."

Alcaraz started with more quality until Bergs broke the Spaniard's serve to go up 3-2 in the first set.

The 23-year-old grabbed back that break in the next game but was uncharacteristically off-target, sending a mess of shots into the net.

He double-faulted to hand Bergs a critical break point in the 11th game, and lost the first set when a volley went short.

Alcaraz was visibly frustrated during the second set as he vented to his corner following a series of misfired shots that left him with no points in the fourth and eighth games.

Alcaraz forced a tie-break but could not reach a third set as Bergs closed things out just past the two-hour mark on his first match point.

Fritz fumbles

Earlier, Stefanos Tsitsipas came back to beat Taylor Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 and earn fourth round meeting with Daniil Medvedev, who brushed aside qualifier Dalibor Svrcina 6-2, 6-3.

A wardrobe malfunction delayed victory for the Greek world number 43 when a tennis ball tumbled out of the American's pocket a second time and forced the men to replay a match point.

A tired-looking Fritz, seeded 11th, hung on for a bit longer to save the eighth game but could not stick around beyond that, with Tsitsipas holding serve to win at the fifth time of asking.

"I could have done a few things easier, but I ended up being my biggest enemy," Tsitsipas told the crowd afterwards.

"I turned things around really well towards the end and became friends with myself and played some incredible tennis," he said.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, Casper Ruud and Rafael Jodar also went through to the last 16.

Army finish second as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa secure third place

Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) finished at the summit, followed by Pakistan Army and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as the 10th National Road Cycling Championship concluded at Bahria Town Karachi on Sunday.

SSGC won the championship with 16 medals, including 11 gold, three silver and two bronze. Pakistan Army finished runners-up with nine medals, comprising two gold, four silver and three bronze, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa secured third place with seven medals, including two silver and five bronze.

Ahmad Shahzad (Balochistan), Mohammad (Sindh) and Muneeb (Punjab) emerged as the leading young riders while Sindh’s Samar, Punjab’s Christina Haroon and Hoorin Yahya from Crank Addicts stole limelight as young female pedallists.

Organised by the Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF), the three-day championship attracted cyclists from across the country, who competed in men’s, women’s, junior, masters and other categories.

Teams representing SSGC, Pakistan Army, Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts and other organisations took part in individual time trials, team time trials and road races.

POF won three gold medals, while Balochistan secured one gold to complete the list of gold-medal-winning teams.

The inclusion of masters’ categories for cyclists aged 40-49 and 50 and above was a notable feature of this year’s championship. The event also provided young male and female cyclists with an opportunity to demonstrate their potential and gain valuable competitive experience.

The closing ceremony was held on Sunday, with HabibMetro Bank senior executive Sharifa Haider Ali attending as chief guest and distributing prizes among the outstanding performers.

The PCF also announced plans to explore the possibility of hosting the South Asian Road Cycling Championship at Bahria Town Karachi next year, subject to consultations and approval from the relevant international cycling authorities and other stakeholders.

The proposed event aims to provide Pakistani cyclists with greater exposure to regional competition and promote the country as a venue for international sporting events.

The federation, however, expressed concern over the lack of an annual grant or financial assistance from the Pakistan Sports Board, saying limited resources had made it increasingly difficult to organise national-level competitions.

It said the championship had been staged with support from sponsors and called on government institutions, private-sector companies and sports bodies to provide greater assistance for the development of cycling in Pakistan.

Enzo Maresca’s men seal an emphatic win to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League

Manchester City silenced a hostile Liverpool crowd in their first match since being found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations but there is a deep sense of uncertainty over what it actually means.

Enzo Maresca's men are top of the table with six wins out of six after their impressive 3-0 win at Anfield on Sunday.

Yet those points could count for nothing unless City are successful in their appeal against the findings of an independent commission that found them guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League rules.

No sanction has yet been decided, but the club could face a severe points deduction leading to relegation, or even expulsion from the English top flight.

There is even speculation that City could be stripped of the three Premier League titles they won between 2009 and 2018, the period to which the charges relate.

The Premier League, which has a huge global reach, faces an appeal process likely to drag on for months, putting a question mark against every City result, and with huge potential implications for other clubs.

"We're sat here not knowing what it means," former Manchester United captain turned pundit Gary Neville told Sky Sports on Sunday.

"City supporters will be delighted (with the win), but I don't think they recognise right now the stain, the stigma and the damage this is going to do to them."

The BBC's chief football writer, Phil McNulty, said the team's impressive win at Anfield had been overshadowed by what was happening off the pitch.

"Every victory, every league table, will come with a metaphorical asterisk until clarity and finality comes," he said. "No one knows when this will be."

Andoni Iraola's Liverpool are ninth in the table, nine points behind leaders City.

But even if Liverpool fail to challenge for the title, the three points lost on Sunday could cost them dearly in the battle for a place in the Champions League.

Potential sanctions against City could also have an impact on the battle for relegation.

"That today, what does it mean going forward?" former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports.

"This has to be done before the end of the season. There's no way this can carry on to the end of the season because we're all getting kidded."

Liverpool anger

The Premier League announced late last month that an independent commission had found that City had arranged "sham" deals to artificially inflate revenues and reduce costs by more than £900 million ($1.2 billion) between 2009 and 2018.

Liverpool feel particularly aggrieved, having finished second behind the Manchester club in the Premier League three times in the past 12 years.

City's rivals believe the Abu Dhabi-backed club's spending in the 2009-2018 period built the foundations for a golden era that continues to bear fruit.

The Premier League leaders spent around £460 million ($609 million) in the 2026 summer transfer window -- a new Premier League record for a single window -- as new boss Maresca reshaped the squad following the departure of Pep Guardiola.

One of City's expensive new signings, midfielder Elliot Anderson, admitted the criticism of the club had galvanised the players as they stepped out at Anfield.

"We've got to stick together," said the England midfielder. "I think it really brings us together. It gives you that determination to come out here, everyone is against you, and turn them over, which we did."

Anderson and his teammates will have to get used to their new reality as the whole of English football waits for a definitive decision in a case that has rumbled on for years.

As chants, banners, flags and scarves at Anfield showed, City stand accused of cheating their way to the top -- and opposition fans will not be silenced.

Says there should also be a legal requirement for companies to write 'incident reports'

Artificial Intelligence needs urgent global regulation with independent evaluators able to vet new developments, the president of Microsoft said, warning that AI currently faces fewer safety requirements than milk.

In an interview with the BBC published on ‌Monday, Brad Smith said a set of global safety rules needed to be in place, requiring a "victim" to be informed if their system is breached by a rogue AI agent and an "emergency brake" available.

He said there should also be a legal requirement for companies to write "incident reports".

"We know how to do this for other products," Smith said. "We should build on that knowledge and think about how to apply it to AI."

"Right now, your washing machine is subject to more safety rules than AI. Every carton of milk that you see in the grocery store is subject to safety rules and inspection."

Tech companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI have started disclosing rogue or undesired behaviour by AI agents as part of a global debate about the fast-advancing technology that has included researchers' warnings of an eventual existential threat to humanity.

Some companies ‌have called for AI development to slow down, but that has sparked a debate as to whether executives have ulterior motives such as setting rules that preserve the lead of their firms, pre-empting a broader government backlash, or simply slowing breakneck spending.

Microsoft's Smith said the one country that was well-placed to lead the way on regulation of AI was Britain, due to the AI Security Institute which was launched under former prime minister Rishi Sunak.

Smith said officials in Washington viewed London very differently to how they viewed Brussels, which regulates AI based on the level of risk via its AI Act.

Britain's institute receives pre-deployment access under voluntary agreements with the major AI models, allowing it to assess their capabilities and risks.

AI Minister Kanishka Narayan has told Reuters that Britain would consider regulating advanced models if the current system proved insufficient.

The two developed new macroeconomic models that improved the ability to implement effective stabilisation policy

US academics Robert Hall and Michael Woodford won the 2026 Nobel economics prize for "for microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation", the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said on Monday.

The prestigious ‌award, formally known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, is the final prize to be given out this year and is worth 12 million Swedish crowns ($1.2 million).

The two laureates developed new macroeconomic models that improved our ability to implement effective stabilisation policy, enabling well-timed fiscal and monetary policy measures that can reduce the intensity of damaging swings in the economy.

"The laureates’ work has provided us with a stable theoretical foundation for the models that are now used by central banks and governments around the world," John Hassler, Chair of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences, said in a statement.

"With them, we are better equipped to deal with shocks in the economy, such as energy crises or sudden changes in how much households consume."

The economics prize, first awarded in 1969, is not one of the original five ‌awards created in the 1895 will of industrialist and dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel, but was established by Sweden's central bank.

The majority of previous laureates have been from the United States. Only three women have ever won, most recently Claudia Goldin in 2023 for work on how gender has affected pay and employment over time in the United States.

Analysis by the Institute for Scientific Information, part of Clarivate, had picked researchers working on monetary policy, the economics of information technology and evolutionary economic theory as possible recipients.

Last year's winners, Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt, won for work on "creative destruction" and how new technology and production methods can boost growth and living standards.

Abduction of Palestinians by Israeli occupiers on rise in occupied West Bank: officials

An Israeli strike killed at least two Palestinians in the southern Gaza Strip on Monday, health ‌officials reported.

The Israeli military claimed it targeted a combatant in the area, without giving further information.

Late on Sunday, an Israeli airstrike hit a tent in the Mawasi area of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, killing three people, medics said. The Israeli military claimed to Reuters on Monday they struck combatants in the area.

Israel, which alleges Hamas has been rearming and launching attacks in violation of a ceasefire, has stepped up strikes on the group in recent weeks.

Hamas has denied attempting to carry out attacks or rebuild its arsenal, saying that Israel is undermining the Gaza peace deal.

Last year's US-brokered Gaza ceasefire calls for the eventual reconstruction of the territory. But little progress has been made towards implementing a deal to end the conflict that includes terms for Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw its troops.

Gaza health officials have said at least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the October 2025 ceasefire. Israel says four of its soldiers have been killed by militants in Gaza over the same period.

Abduction of Palestinians by Israeli occupiers on the rise in occupied West Bank: Officials

Abductions and arbitrary detention of Palestinians by Israeli occupiers have increased across the occupied West Bank, particularly targeting farmers and rural communities, Palestinian officials and rights groups said Monday.

Read: Israel strikes Gaza on October 7 anniversary, at least two dead: officials

Salah al-Khawaja, director of the Colonisation and Wall Resistance Commission’s office in the central West Bank, told Anadolu that such incidents were often accompanied by abuse and violence.

“Palestinians were being detained at makeshift checkpoints or seized during attacks on farmers and rural and Bedouin communities,” he said.

Amir Daoud, the commission’s documentation official, said the repeated attacks make farmers fear for their lives and freedom when accessing their land and could discourage them from reaching their fields.

“The impact of the attacks extends from the victim to the entire village and becomes a means of intimidating residents and weakening their connection to their land,” Daoud said.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in May 2025 that it had documented around 36 incidents since October 2023 in which Israeli occupiers, some wearing military uniforms, abducted or detained at least 50 Palestinians, including three children.

Palestinian rights group Al-Haq also said in a September 24 report that documented cases showed an “increasing pattern” of abductions and unlawful arbitrary detentions.

In the latest reported incidents, Israeli occupiers abducted seven Palestinians on Saturday, according to the official Voice of Palestine radio.

The outlet said three abductions were reported in Nahalin west of Bethlehem, three in Qaffin north of Tulkarem and a farmer in Beit Imrin near Nablus, adding that their fate was not immediately known.

Daoud accused the Israeli army of protecting occupiers during some incidents, saying the Qaffin attack took place under army protection.

Systematic policy

Settlement affairs researcher Jamal Juma said the abductions were part of a “systematic policy” targeting Palestinian presence in Area C, which makes up around 60% of the occupied West Bank and remains under full Israeli control.

Under the 1995 Oslo II Agreement, which was intended as a temporary arrangement, the occupied West Bank was divided into Areas A, B and C.

Area A is under full Palestinian civil and security control, Area B under Palestinian civil and Israeli security control, while Area C remains under full Israeli control and makes up around 60% of the West Bank.

The incidents have drawn particular concern during the olive harvest season, when Palestinian farmers face attacks including beatings, denial of access to fields, theft of crops and damage to trees.

According to the official Colonisation and Wall Resistance Commission, more than 26,000 olive trees were cut down or damaged across the West Bank during the first half of 2026.

The olive harvest season began on Sept. 20 with olives intended for pickling, while harvesting varieties used for olive oil production is scheduled to begin on Oct. 15.

Since Israel began its genocide in Gaza in October 2023, attacks by the Israeli army and occupiers against Palestinians and their property have intensified across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

The attacks include killings and arrests of Palestinians, the demolition of homes and structures, the burning of mosques and vehicles, bulldozing of agricultural land, preventing farmers from reaching their fields, stealing crops, displacement and illegal settlement expansion.

Palestinians warn that Israel is paving the way through such measures for the formal annexation of the West Bank, in a move that would undermine the possibility of establishing a Palestinian state as envisioned in relevant UN resolutions.

Achakzai says Balochistan has become no-go area for security forces, yet its CM remains your 'blue-eyed boy'

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Monday said he would personally challenge the emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) in the Peshawar High Court tomorrow, as the party vowed to continue its long march.

Speaking at a press conference outside Parliament alongside Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Opposition Leader in the Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Gohar said the party would decide at its parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday how to oppose the measures in the provincial assembly.

“We will raise our voices on every forum. Our long march is ongoing, and our protests are continuing. We will not accept this,” he said, adding that the demonstrations would continue.

Gohar called October 11 a “black day” in Pakistan’s democratic history, saying the people of K-P had rejected emergency measures and governor’s rule, and that the provincial chief minister had been kept in custody and claimed that supporters of the party were in jail.

“We demand that the measures taken on October 11 be withdrawn,” he said, adding that the party would challenge the decision through all channels. He said he would personally challenge the decisions taken on October 11 in the Peshawar High Court, adding that the party was also pursuing a legal challenge.

The PTI chairman accused the government of showing stubbornness and said the provincial government machinery had been changed abruptly. He said the party had remained in contact with the government until the very last moment, but the situation had deteriorated.

“The federation will be strong only when the provinces are strong,” he said.

Gohar urged the government not to divide the public in the fight against terrorism, calling terrorism a “menace for Pakistan”. He said Pakistan’s future lay in democracy and that the federation would only be strong when its provinces were strong.

Speaking alongside Gohar, Achakzai said that opposition parties would stage protests across Pakistan against the imposition of governor’s rule and emergency measures in K-P, vowing to continue a peaceful democratic struggle alongside efforts to negotiate with the government.

He said his party would direct opposition groups to protest according to their capacity and announce a democratic movement in every district where emergency measures had not been imposed.

“We will hold peaceful protests,” he said, adding that the opposition was ready for all forms of negotiations to achieve a democratic Pakistan.

Achakzai criticised the decision to impose governor’s rule and emergency measures in K-P, calling it a major attack. He said he had been raising concerns about the Constitution when the measures were imposed and argued that the situation in Balochistan was worse than the circumstances cited to justify governor’s rule in K-P.

“Balochistan’s chief minister is your blue-eyed boy, but you take no action against what is being looted there,” he said, adding that half of Balochistan had become a no-go area for security forces.

The opposition leader also criticised the government over the February 8 elections, alleging that people’s consciences had been bought and sold through money and coercion. He claimed that voters had elected the PTI founder Imran Khan but that the party had been denied its mandate.

Read: ‘Afridi, some of his cabinet members have been taken into preventive custody,’ confirms Talal

“Forty million people’s right to vote has been mocked,” he said, adding that Pakistan would progress only when Parliament was strong.

Achakzai said the Constitution provided for Parliament and the judiciary and stipulated that Parliament would formulate policies, with all institutions required to operate within constitutional limits. He added that Article 6 applied to those who violated the Constitution.

“The current government is the biggest terrorist,” he said, warning that political parties supporting what he called terrorism would become part of history. He also said that the PTI was not even being allowed to grieve over the theft of its mandate.

Achakzai called for permission to meet Imran, saying he was willing to provide a written assurance that he would not disclose anything discussed during the meeting. “This government wants Imran to leave the country, but he is not leaving,” he said.

He also rejected the suggestion that he did not want to meet the prime minister, saying he was willing to meet but would not go to the Prime Minister’s House or the Speaker’s Office. He said the opposition would continue its struggle against the existing system while pursuing negotiations.

On the occasion, Raja Nasir Abbas also rejected the imposition of governor’s rule and emergency measures, saying the country was dealing with “deceivers and liars”. He said the unanimously agreed Constitution was being made controversial and accused the government of equating political workers with terrorists.

“We have to contend with those who violate the Constitution,” Abbas said, calling for unity in the fight against terrorism. “Let us join hands with the people of the province to fight terrorists,” he added.

Questioning the justification for imposing emergency measures in K-P, Abbas said the law and order situation in Balochistan was worse and argued that emergency should be imposed there instead. He warned that the situation could deteriorate further if the public did not stand together, saying matters had already gone too far.

Earlier, a petition challenging the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule in K-P was also filed in the PHC.

The petition was filed by Advocate Salman; the petition named President Zardari, PM Shehbaz and K-P Governor Faisal Karim Kundi as respondents. It argued that the measures were unconstitutional, illegal and mala fide, and violated fundamental rights, provincial autonomy and the democratic mandate.

The petitioner asked the court to declare the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule null and void, and sought suspension of the notification imposing governor’s rule until a final decision on the case.

Federal government imposes emergency, governor’s rule

As the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) long march entered the end of its first week, the federal government imposed emergency measures and governor’s rule in K-P, escalating tensions between the centre and the province’s opposition-led political leadership.

PTI leaders rejected the imposition, calling the move undemocratic and vowing to challenge it through constitutional forums. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman also criticised the decision, accusing the federal government of backtracking on its commitments amid negotiations with the PTI over its long march. The Tehreek-e-Tahafuz Aain-e-Pakistan (TTAP), also condemned the measures and vowed to challenge them through the courts, assemblies and public forums.

Initially planning to launch the long march on September 27, Afridi on September 26 rescheduled the protest to take place on October 4 amid extensive security and traffic restrictions and continuing efforts to negotiate with the federal government.

Marathon talks between the government and the opposition on October 2 and 3 failed to find middle ground in an effort to ease tensions ahead of the long march, as both sides pressed competing demands and remained at an impasse. PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja later said that the deadlock in negotiations with the federal government emerged over the issue of the counterterrorism policy in K-P.

Amid prevailing tensions, the breakdown of negotiations, and Afridi proceeding with the march, President Asif Ali Zardari signed off on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recommendation to impose emergency rule in K-P amid a deteriorating security situation and the provincial government’s deliberate disengagement from the fight against terrorism.

The proclamation said the provincial government had failed to take adequate measures against terrorism and referred to the governor’s report highlighting a breakdown in the constitutional system.

The chief minister, provincial ministers, advisers, special assistants and advocate general ceased to hold office with immediate effect. The federal government subsequently authorised the deployment of Pakistan Army troops and assets under Article 245 to protect citizens, property and government installations for the duration of the emergency proclamation.

Oil prices oscillated on Monday as the market considered possible further supplies after US President Donald Trump hailed fresh Russian ‌diesel exports against supply-constricting signals after major attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Retracing earlier losses, Brent crude futures rose 69 cents or 0.7%, to $105.41 a barrel by 2:23pm PKT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude was at $92.42 a barrel, up 57 cents, or 0.6%.

The Iran-aligned Houthis claimed responsibility for a Saturday strike on Riyadh's international airport that killed 13 people and wounded more than 300. Further attacks happened on Sunday.

In addition, more attacks on tankers sailing through the Strait of Hormuz have been reported this month, threatening to dampen a recovery in Middle East crude exports seen in September.

A tanker was struck by a drone in the vicinity of Oman's Sohar, while another was damaged transiting Hormuz, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported.

Goldman Sachs, in a note, raised its Brent price forecast for December to $90 a barrel from $85, estimating a risk premium of just over $20 a barrel.

"We forecast WTI prices, which are unusually low vs Brent because of high US-Europe shipping costs, to average $81 in December 2026 and $73 in 2027," they added.

In the Gulf of Mexico, energy majors Shell, Chevron and BP were seeking to redeploy personnel ‌and restore production at their platforms after Hurricane Isaias made landfall early on Saturday.

More Russian diesel

ICE gasoil futures fell 4.3% to $1,419.5 per metric ton after President Trump said on Friday that Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 metric tons (2.25 million barrels) of diesel to US and global markets, with more to come later.

"The immediate impact of the deal is questionable, as Russia’s refining capacity has been severely reduced," PVM analyst Tamas Varga said. "However, Moscow has partially lifted its ban on diesel exports, allowing 500,000 tons (around 3.7 million barrels) to be released onto the international market —equivalent to roughly one day of US consumption and around 13% of global demand."

Trump also unexpectedly announced on Sunday that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to an energy ceasefire, but Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he was still waiting to see details, while Russia did not comment.

The International Energy Agency's Fatih Birol said all members should assess whether additional diesel releases are necessary and that countries which have not yet fully delivered pledged volumes should accelerate releases prioritising diesel.

France's high school students on Monday begin a new stage of their campaign for improved conditions, hoping to maintain the momentum with a fresh wave of demonstrations.

The new protests, scheduled for Tuesday, could be a turning point in the movement, launched in mid-September, which the government hopes is already winding down.

On Friday, the government noted a dramatic drop in the number of blockades and meetings outside the country's lycees, where students most between 15 and 18 complete their high school education. More than 96pc were opening Friday, said the education ministry.

The authorities are all the more keen to see the student protests end given that online activists have called for demonstrations next Saturday to protest the cost of living. For President Emmanuel Macron's administration, that brings back troubling memories of the grassroots Yellow Vest movement.

Their protests, launched in 2018 over a planned fuel tax rise, saw massive demonstrations and clashes between police and protesters that shook the presidency during Macron's first term in office.

Concessions

The government is still counting the cost of the high school protests. A government source told journalists last week that the cost for damage caused by the demonstrations was "at least 30 million euros".

On Friday, the justice ministry said more than 6,800 people had been detained since the demonstrations started, 86pc of them minors.

After clashes between some protesters and riot police left some students severely injured, sparking criticism of police tactics, the government suspended the use of stun grenades that cost one student his hand.

Police are investigating 18 alleged cases of misconduct within their ranks. Last week, the government came up with concrete proposals to try to address the students' demands.

Education Minister Edouard Geffray announced on Thursday that some 3,000 substitute teachers would be deployed in the coming days to replace absent staff at the 114 worst-affected high schools.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu a day earlier promised to make changes to the planned budget 2027 to respond to some demands set out in an online platform the government set up to gather students' views.

'Crumbs'

The student organisations behind the protests are yet to be convinced, however.

The Union of High School students described the initial announcements last week as "crumbs". They are maintaining their demand for an extra 10 million euros to be invested in the country's lycees.

France's 10,000 medical students, however, are beginning to express concern at the effect any continued school blockades could have on exams starting Monday that help determine their eventual speciality.

They do not want to see the students' action disrupt such a crucial stage of their education.

Last Thursday's student demonstrations mobilised tens of thousands of people across France: 71,500 according to interior ministry figures.

Nearly 256,000 took part in last Tuesday's day of action. And one poll, carried out by Ipsos-BVA and published on Sunday, said 54pc of respondents backed the high school student protests.

Police produce suspect Nauman to court with his face covered

An Islamabad District and Sessions Court on Monday remanded a suspect in police custody for five days in a case involving the reported suicide of a former International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) student, Laiba, following an alleged fraud.

Laiba had reportedly committed suicide after her dreams of pursuing higher studies at Harvard University in the United States were squashed when a man posing as an agent defrauded her of over Rs7 million. Her body was found hanging from a tree in Sector G-10 in Islamabad on Friday. Subsequently, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took notice of the case, directing Islamabad Police and the FIA to initiate investigations.

The suspect, identified as Muhammad Nauman, was produced before Judicial Magistrate Zunaira Zafar, where police sought a 10-day physical remand for further investigation.

The court, however, granted police five days of physical remand and handed the suspect over to investigators. Police brought Nauman to court with his face covered.

The FIA’s Anti-Human Trafficking Circle in Islamabad registered a case against suspects Nauman and Fatima Sarwar under Sections 419 (cheating), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 109 (abetment) of the Pakistan Penal Code, read with Sections 18 and 22 of the Emigration Ordinance, 1979.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly acted in connivance to deceive Laiba with promises of a US visa and scholarship. They allegedly received a total of Rs9.3 million from the family.

The FIA said the suspects allegedly prepared fake scholarship award letters, university admission offer letters and fee payment receipts to keep the family under the impression that the process was genuine. Of the total amount, Rs2.9m was transferred through Laiba’s personal bank account, while the remaining sum was received in cash, according to the agency.

Laiba's family stated that she had aspired to enrol at Harvard University for further studies and that they had made significant financial sacrifices to secure Laiba’s academic future and fulfil her dream. Laiba’s father sold his plot and pitched in Rs2.1 million from the sale’s proceeds, while her mother sold her gold jewellery.

According to the family, the suspect who reportedly defrauded them claimed to be an accounts officer at the Islamabad High Court and at other times presented himself as an employee of the superior judiciary or an officer of a sensitive institution. The family claimed that despite the substantial payment, the promises regarding admission and the scholarship given to Laiba were never fulfilled.

Laiba’s maternal uncle, Rana Amjad, stated that the Harvard University admission letter, scholarship letter and other documents provided by the suspect turned out to be fake upon verification.

He said that Laiba suffered severe distress and mental anguish after the alleged fraud came to light. Her family demanded a thorough investigation into the matter, the arrest of all individuals involved in the alleged fraud, and the recovery of the money.

Naqvi says 'not everything will change in single day' as first time in two years Centre and province are on same page

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Monday called for closer Centre-province coordination against terrorism as K-P held its first Apex Committee meeting after the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule.

A day earlier, Kundi had convened the first Apex Committee meeting after the federal government formed an 11-member advisory council to oversee administrative affairs in K-P. The K-P governor also chaired the advisory council’s inaugural meeting, where he said the state was determined to rid the province of terrorism.

Today, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi co-chaired the provincial Apex Committee meeting at Governor’s House, which was attended by members of the Advisory Council and senior officials.

“There are many other issues, but our first priority is to eliminate terrorism. We can sacrifice development, but we cannot compromise on security,” Kundi said, calling for greater coordination between the federal and provincial governments and stronger support for law enforcement agencies.

He said the police and the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) needed the resources and facilities required to confront terrorist threats. "We have to fulfil their demands because they are our frontline force,” he said.

“We should focus on result-oriented measures, not cosmetic steps to show that we are working for peace. Fewer things may be done, but the results should be visible,” he added

Kundi further stated that people in the province wanted "peace, development and prosperity," but insecurity had prevented many from living freely and travelling without fear.

"They see people elsewhere living freely, conducting business and going about their lives. We have to create the same conditions here,” he said.

According to Kundi, lasting peace would also help attract investment and support economic activity, pointing to the province’s natural resources, agriculture, energy potential and tourism opportunities.

He called for close coordination between the federal and provincial administrations, saying the government would continue working through the relevant committees to address security gaps and ensure that institutions worked together.

“There should be no situation in which we are not on the same page,” he said.

Naqvi addresses Apex Committee

Naqvi said the meeting marked the first time in two-and-a-half years that he could confidently say "the federal and provincial governments are on one page."

“The hardest task was faced by the people who were fighting this war. There were times when people would not even attend the funerals of those who had been martyred,” he said.

Naqvi paid tribute to security personnel who "fought terrorists even without the necessary support from the government" and said that a government had to lead the fight against terrorism rather than leave security forces to carry the burden alone.

“No matter how many resources you provide, a war cannot be won unless the government there leads it,” he said.

Naqvi added the authorities had repeatedly asked the provincial government to cooperate in counter-terrorism efforts over the past two-and-a-half years, but the necessary coordination had not materialised.

“The people have not changed. They are the same people. But when the government leads, you will see how much better the results can be,” he said.

Naqvi cautioned that "not everything will change in a single day" and that the hardest times may still come, but the governor, the police, the advisers and the federal government will face them together.

Read: 'Govt can't keep sleeping when it comes to citizens' security': DPM Dar on K-P emergency, governor's rule

“If we stand together, there is no way they can defeat us,” he added.

The interior minister also called for a return to a five-district security plan, under which police and other relevant institutions would receive additional support in phases.

“If you cannot provide protection or facilities to a police officer, and your opponent has modern weapons while the officer has only a pistol, how can you expect that officer to fight effectively?” Naqvi said.

He welcomed the work being undertaken by the relevant security authorities to strengthen the police, saying the proposed measures could prove to be a turning point for the force. Naqvi also praised the public for remaining peaceful over the preceding 24 hours, saying there had been concerns that protests might disrupt life across the province.

“The province is largely peaceful, and the people want peace. Their expectations are clear; now it is up to us to deliver,” he said.

He urged the new administration and security institutions to work together, expressing confidence that improved coordination and sustained efforts would produce results.

Federal imposes emergency, governor's rule

The federal government imposed emergency measures and governor’s rule in K-P on Sunday after the federal cabinet approved the recommendation and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif advised President Asif Ali Zardari to invoke Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution. Zardari signed the summary, transferring executive authority from the provincial government to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi.

The government cited escalating terrorist attacks, threats to lives and property, attacks on government installations and law-enforcement personnel, and what it said was the provincial government’s failure to take adequate measures against terrorism.

The two constitutional provisions serve different purposes. Article 232 provides for the proclamation of an emergency in circumstances including war, external aggression or internal disturbance beyond the control of a provincial government. Article 234, meanwhile, provides for intervention when the constitutional machinery of a province cannot be carried on in accordance with the Constitution.

The proclamation invoked Articles 232(1) and 234(1), stating that the provincial government could not function constitutionally under the prevailing circumstances. Under the new arrangement, the federal government could direct the governor to assume some or all functions of the provincial government, while the powers of the provincial assembly would be exercised by Parliament or under its authority. The chief minister, provincial ministers, advisers, special assistants and advocate general ceased to hold office with immediate effect.

The emergency was declared in 12 districts, rather than across the entire province. These comprised the eight merged tribal districts — Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai, North Waziristan, South Waziristan Upper and South Waziristan Lower — and Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu and Lakki Marwat.

The emergency covered the Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan divisions in full and parts of the Peshawar, Kohat and Malakand divisions, while Hazara and Mardan divisions were exempted. The federal government also authorised the deployment of Pakistan Army troops and assets under Article 245 to assist the civil administration and protect citizens, property and government installations.

To assist Kundi in administering the province, the federal government constituted an 11-member advisory council. Its members are Tariq Mahmood Pasha, Dr Aamir Abdullah, retired Lieutenant General Nigar Johar, Samar Bilour, Dr Sarfaraz Ali, Aamir Javed, Dr M Irshad, Kifayatullah, Tayyab Qureshi, Usman Saifullah Khan and Asif Rafiq. Sanaullah Advocate was appointed the provincial advocate general. The council is intended to support the governor in overseeing provincial administrative affairs under the new arrangement.

Alongside the province-wide transfer of executive authority, the federal government ordered the establishment of an Area Development Secretariat to oversee administration, security, law enforcement and development in the 12 designated districts. The secretariat is to operate under an Area Representative and Development Council, with the additional chief secretary for the designated districts also serving as their administrator.

Under the federal order, the administrator can direct civil administration, police and military authorities, supervise relevant departments and order the allocation or transfer of funds. The order also places provincial officers and personnel serving in those districts under the secretariat’s administrative and operational control.

Turkiye, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia condemn attacks on Riyadh airport

UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash stressed on Monday a pressing need to revive joint Gulf action, particularly on aspects of security and defence, saying that targeting Saudi Arabia undermined the security of all Gulf states.

Neglect of collective Gulf security had 'emboldened others' to overreach against regional states, he added.

Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia condemned attacks by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi militants on Riyadh's international airport, saying they were a "dangerous escalation that cannot be justified or accepted under any pretext".

One person was killed and nearly a dozen were hurt in a new attack on Riyadh's international airport on Sunday, Saudi authorities reported, a day after a strike claimed by the Houthis that killed 13 people and wounded more than 300.

The group of regional powers - dubbed the R4 - reaffirmed their solidarity and support for Saudi Arabia, including full support for all "legitimate measures and steps" it takes to counter the attacks, deter threats and prevent them from happening again.

"The Group holds the Houthi militia fully accountable for the results of these attacks and any repercussions that come with it that threaten regional and international peace and security, and demands the immediate and unconditional halt of these attacks," they said in a joint statement on Sunday.

NATO member Turkiye and nuclear-armed Pakistan signed a joint defence pact with Saudi Arabia in August, under which an attack on one party constitutes an attack on all. Last week, the countries said they had agreed to implement their collective defence commitments and ensure the "rapid deployment" of forces and capabilities in Saudi Arabia amid the Houthi attacks.

On Thursday, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Turkiye was assessing how it can help Saudi Arabia, but ruled out troop deployment and Turkish participation in offensive operations. A day earlier, officials had told Reuters that Ankara was sending mainly defensive and technical support to Riyadh.

Turkish support for Saudi Arabia has largely been in a bilateral capacity so far, as Turkiye's parliament has not yet officially ratified the joint defence pact. The agreement is expected to be submitted to parliament in the coming days.

Turkiye, which has NATO's second-largest army and a robust defence industry, has provided Saudi Arabia with defence equipment and agreed to join a Saudi-led coalition to ensure navigational safety in the Red Sea.

KSE-100 closes at 165,124 as selling grips banks, oil and gas, cement stocks

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) endured a bruising start to the week on Monday, as political upheaval in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and mounting geopolitical anxieties kept investors on edge, driving the benchmark index deep into the red. The KSE-100 Index remained volatile throughout the session before shedding 1,964.87 points, or 1.18%, to settle at 165,124.41.

The imposition of governor’s rule and emergency measures in parts of K-P, followed by reports of police crackdown, added to the political clamour, stoking fears of further unrest.

Selling pressure swept across oil marketing companies, automobile assemblers, cement, power, commercial banks and oil and gas exploration companies, reflecting the broad-based weakness in market sentiment.

In the international market, oil prices eased on expectations of increased Russian supplies after United States President Donald Trump said Ukraine and Russia had agreed to halt attacks on each other’s energy facilities following a US diesel-supply deal with Moscow. However, the relief was tempered by fears of a wider regional conflict after a Houthi attack on Riyadh’s international airport, leaving investors wary amid an already unsettled geopolitical landscape.

Read: No straight path for markets

Talking to The Express Tribune, Fawad Basir, head of research at KTrade, attributed the market’s weakness to geopolitical uncertainty and heightened tensions in K-P. He said while June 2026 corporate results in the listed space were better than expected, higher commodity prices were keeping inflation elevated despite the base effect, potentially influencing this month’s monetary policy decision.

At the same time, exchange rate parity and interest rates remained key concerns amid the Middle East crisis and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) tranche review, Basir added.

In their report, KTrade mentioned that selling pressure was broad-based across commercial banks, oil and gas, cement and technology stocks. Oil and Gas Development Company, Habib Bank, Meezan Bank, and Lucky Cement were among the major laggards.

Going forward, market direction is likely to remain volatile, hinging on geopolitical developments and oil prices, with sustained easing in crude prices and progress in US-Iran engagement potentially supporting equities, while further regional escalation could extend the bearish trend, KTrade forecasted.

Overall, trading volume increased to 362.9 million shares from Friday's close of 309.4 million shares while the value of traded shares stood at Rs14.50 billion. In the ready market, shares of 500 companies were traded, of which 135 stocks closed higher, 322 fell and 43 remained unchanged.

Petitioner asks court to declare the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule null and void

A petition challenging the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) was filed in the Peshawar High Court on Monday, a day after President Asif Ali Zardari approved the federal government’s decision on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The legal challenge came after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s long march, led by former chief minister Sohail Afridi, reached its first week on Sunday amid mounting tensions with the federal government. Islamabad imposed emergency measures and governor’s rule in the province, citing the deteriorating security situation and the need to address terrorism.

The move was followed by a reported crackdown on PTI workers and leaders, with Afridi and several prominent party figures reported to have been arrested.

The federal intervention effectively transferred executive authority from the provincial government to Governor Kundi, while an emergency was declared in 12 districts. The PTI rejected the move, describing it as an attack on the province’s autonomy and the party’s electoral mandate.

The latest imposition marked the fourth spell of governor’s rule in the province. The first occurred in 1975 under the government of then-prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. The province subsequently experienced two further periods of governor’s rule, in 1994 and 1999, amid separate political and constitutional crises.

Under Article 234 of the Constitution, the president can assume or direct the governor to assume some or all functions of a provincial government when the province cannot be governed in accordance with the Constitution. The arrangement can also allow Parliament to exercise the powers of the provincial assembly, subject to constitutional requirements and time limits.

The emergency was separately proclaimed under Article 232, which concerns emergencies arising from war or internal disturbance. The federal government said the measures were necessary in view of terrorism and security threats in the province. The two measures together shifted the province’s executive administration to the governor and a federal-backed arrangement, while leaving the legal and political validity of the decision open to challenge before the courts.

Election Commission data shows 130 million names deleted from electoral rolls

Authorities closed six metro stations and warned of traffic disruptions in Delhi on Monday, as opposition parties planned to march to the Supreme Court in protest against a controversial revision of ‌voter lists that has sparked days of unrest in the Indian capital.

Opposition parties and supporters of the "cockroach" youth movement have taken to the streets almost daily this month to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the revision that critics say benefits Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Read More: India sees major protest against election chief

The revision that started last year saw over 130 million names – more than the population of Japan – being deleted from voter lists, including the dead, the relocated and people who could not be traced.

Police detained thousands of protesters in Delhi over the weekend, including leaders of the 'Cockroach Janta Party' (CJP), as supporters of the youth movement sought to march in protest and were stopped by thousands of security personnel who locked down central Delhi.

The Election Commission has denied favouring any party and said wrongly deleted voters can re-enrol, while the BJP has accused its rivals of trying to undermine the country's democracy by wrongly questioning legitimate electoral processes.

Six metro stations were closed on Monday for "security reasons", and police imposed traffic restrictions and diversions along over 20 stretches.

The main opposition Congress party announced a march to the Supreme Court to submit a memorandum to the Chief Justice demanding an end to what it calls "vote theft" and Kumar's resignation.

Yesterday, the nation's young came out in Delhi to peacefully protest. They came with love in their hearts, not hatred or anger. They were beaten, both by cops and BJP goons.

This is not the India we want.

Tomorrow, we will march to the Supreme Court as Indians, united beyond… pic.twitter.com/zQJLFbpebV

"Youth, all opposition parties, civil society groups, all those who believe in democracy and stand by the Constitution of India, will walk with us," ‌Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on X.

Cockroach movement to seek permission for new protest

Chief Justice Surya Kant, however, declined the meeting request in an email, saying Gandhi and the Congress delegation should instead approach the court legally since the issue is already being heard by the court and should be addressed through judicial proceedings, a Congress source said.

Separately, the CJP said its leaders would meet Delhi Police to "demand" a date for a peaceful protest. It has threatened to announce a new protest call if a date is not given within 24 hours.

🚨 Important

Tomorrow at 10 AM, @AshutoshRanka, @SauravDassss, @whattalawyer, along with other CJP leaders, will visit Parliament Street Police Station to demand a date for our peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar.@DelhiPolice can give us a date within 24 hours, or we will…
— Cockroach Janta Party - CJP (@Cockroachisback) October 11, 2026

The youth movement, which has mobilised protests in recent months against issues ranging from government school infrastructure to jobs, is one of the biggest political challenges to Modi and his BJP in his 12 years in power.

The protests erupted after the Indian Express newspaper reported last month that Kumar's two deputies raised several concerns internally about voter list revisions, registration procedures and digital systems.

Election Commission data shows about 130 million names have been deleted from electoral rolls during the verification exercise, including 28 million people who had died, 63 million who had relocated and 30 million who could not be traced.

Opposition parties allege Muslim voters and other minorities, who are unlikely to support the Hindu nationalist ruling party, are disproportionately affected by the deletions – charges both the poll panel and BJP reject.

Cricketers must stay vigilant against corruption and honey traps

There was still some time before the meeting, so I thought I might as well have some ice cream. I went into a shop and, when I looked at the price list, did what most Pakistanis tend to do: convert the prices from British pounds into Pakistani rupees. Then I asked myself, ‘would you really spend several thousand rupees on ice cream? You wasteful man! Get out of here!’ But I listened to my heart and thought, ‘How often do you get to visit London? Treat yourself!’
After buying the ice cream, I went back outside and continued watching the traffic passing along Edgware Road. Oh, I haven’t told you that this was the day Pakistan lost the Test match at Lord’s. There is a sizeable Arab community in this area, and Pakistani politicians have also lived here. During my stay, I witnessed a few minor ‘live fights’ between groups of young men in the vicinity.
For a few moments, I also thought about the security of my mobile phone and laptop, but then reassured myself that this was London, not Karachi.
I had gone straight from the stadium to a ceremony, where I received an award. I was having dinner afterwards when I was invited to a meeting. As the conversation began at an Arabic restaurant, a revelation emerged that left me utterly astonished.
That very night, a few players were questioned at their hotel, and their mobile phones were also taken away. More details will emerge in due course. It is possible that the players in question did nothing wrong and are entirely innocent. Therefore, it would not be appropriate to say too much at this stage. We will have to wait and see how the ongoing investigation unfolds. However, they should cooperate fully with the authorities. If someone is innocent, nothing can be established against them without evidence. On the other hand, attempting to divert attention elsewhere will bring no benefit, only harm. Such attempts have been made in the past, but they achieved nothing.
Pakistan has witnessed several match-fixing cases. Players are well aware of the damage these scandals cause, yet some still make mistakes. Until a few years ago, surrogate advertising was widespread in the country. Gambling companies would make minor changes to their names to promote themselves indirectly. However, when people visited their websites, they would find links to betting services.
Several such companies even sponsored Pakistan’s home series. Despite media reports highlighting the issue, nothing was done. The standard excuse was that one company was called ‘Bet’ while another was called ‘Bat’, and that the similarity in the rest of their names was merely a coincidence.
The issue gained greater prominence when a player in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) objected to such advertising and placed a sticker over the logo. Interestingly, he had already played all the other matches in the tournament before doing so. The previous season had also featured a team sponsored by a similar company, whose logo appeared on the players’ shirts.
People had understood the meaning of surrogate advertising years earlier, yet the practice continued. Initially, one company dominated the market, but several others eventually joined in. When public outcry grew louder, the government finally took action and banned such advertising. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) complied fully, but the practice continued elsewhere.
In the recent past, billboards featuring a former captain promoting a similar company appeared along several roads in Karachi.
Perhaps no other issue has damaged Pakistani cricket as much as match-fixing scandals. It is now time to adopt a genuine zero-tolerance policy. A law should be introduced stating that anyone proven guilty of such an offence must never again be allowed to participate in any cricket-related activity. They should not even be permitted to conduct interviews or offer commentary on digital media. They must be kept completely away from cricketers.
If someone commits such an offence without considering the interests of the country, why should anyone else worry about their livelihood? After all, they must have earned enough money to live comfortably for the rest of their lives.
When such individuals are not dealt with firmly, young players are encouraged to believe that they, too, can get away with wrongdoing. Seeing people who have committed offences in the past roaming around freely and being celebrated as ‘so-and-so bhai’ or ‘such-and-such bhai’ makes young cricketers think they will escape punishment as well.
If corrupt individuals are made examples of, just imagine how much good that could do for the game.
Even today, players frequently receive offers that may be suspicious. Thanks to the PCB’s guidance, many report these approaches to the authorities, helping protect themselves from trouble. Players, too, need to think carefully: people do not give expensive gifts for no reason. Why would someone abandon their entire business to attend every match played by the Pakistan team? There must be some motive behind it. Could you be getting used? Could someone be discreetly trying to obtain inside information from you?
Monitoring and oversight also need to be strengthened. Why would a businessman become friends with a domestic cricketer? Why would he give him gifts or take him everywhere? Think about it.
Players should also avoid falling for messages they receive from women on social media. They should not immediately lose their hearts over such attention. Nor should they send suggestive messages on Instagram that might later emerge as viral screenshots. These days, even voices can be altered using artificial intelligence, so players must exercise caution even when speaking on the phone.
Several players have fallen victim to honey traps, and they need proper guidance on how to protect themselves against such schemes.
Thanks to the PSL, Pakistani cricketers can now earn substantial amounts even if they never represent the national team. They should always remember the lesson they learnt as children: ‘Greed is a terrible curse.’ Keeping this in mind is in everyone’s best interest.

The Olympic champion prioritises recovery after an intense run of matches following her return from injury

Freshly crowned China Open champion Zheng Qinwen withdrew on Monday from her home tournament in Wuhan, citing fatigue and a right shoulder injury.

Zheng became the first Chinese player to clinch the Beijing title on Sunday by defeating reigning Roland Garros champion Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 in the final.

It was Zheng's first WTA 1000-level triumph and her first title since winning Tokyo two years ago.

"I'm very sorry to share that I will be withdrawing from this year's Wuhan Open," Zheng said in a statement.

"Wuhan is where my tennis dream began, and the Wuhan Open is also where I made my breakthrough at the WTA 1000 level. I have always looked forward to competing in front of my hometown fans.

"Since returning from injury, however, I have played a demanding stretch of tennis over the past month and a half, competing at the US Open, the Billie Jean King Cup, and the China Open.

"My body is feeling very fatigued after this intense run of matches."

An Olympic gold medallist in Paris 2024 and a former world number four, Zheng underwent elbow surgery last year and missed nearly eight months of action, dropping as low as 160 in the rankings this season.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a resurgence over the past few weeks, however, reaching the US Open quarter-finals before lifting the trophy in Beijing.

She is now ranked back among the world's top-25 but will not pick up any points in Wuhan, which kicks off Monday and ends on Sunday October 18.

Beijing runner-up Andreeva has also withdrawn from Wuhan, citing a change of schedule, as the Russian teenager looks to get some rest ahead of her first singles appearance at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells next month.

Zheng and Andreeva join a growing list of high-profile Wuhan absentees that also includes world number one Elena Rybakina, last year's Wuhan champion Coco Gauff and reigning Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova.

The strikes targeted the group in the Narin area, according to a statement by Iraq's Security Media Cell carried by the official Iraqi News Agency (INA).

The operation was based on intelligence provided by the Military Intelligence Directorate and coordinated with the military's aerial reconnaissance and surveillance centre.

The Security Media Cell said the position was completely destroyed but gave no details on casualties. It said further information would be released later.

The strikes came less than two weeks after the US-led coalition's mission against ISIS in Iraq officially ended on September 30, nearly 12 years after its launch.

Says those with cases will be charged and tried, others will be released

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry confirmed on Monday that former Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) chief minister Sohail Afridi and some of his cabinet members had been "taken into preventive custody," following the imposition of emergency and governor's rule in the province.

"Yes, I can confirm that the chief minister (Sohail Afridi) and some of his cabinet members have been taken into preventive custody," Chaudhry told Reuters.

If any of them have any cases to be tried against them, they will be charged and tried but the others will be released, he said, adding that the detentions happened on Sunday.

A day earlier, K-P Information Minister Shafi Jan claimed that Afridi had been arrested and urged people across the province to gather in Peshawar. However, at the time, no government official had confirmed his arrest or detention.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police in Peshawar said Afridi remained in police protective custody.

The DIG added that eight senior PTI leaders had been taken into protective custody following the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule in K-P. Those detained included Afridi, Junaid Akbar and K-P Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, he said.

"Separately, 169 PTI workers were arrested in a crackdown in Swabi. The arrests were carried out in Shewa Adda, Yar Hussain, Razar, Swabi Khas, Topi, Lahor and Gadoon, among other areas of the district," the DIG said.

According to the DIG, those arrested included several local office-bearers and active PTI workers, saying that they were taken into custody over concerns that preparations for the party’s long march, which began on October 4, could disrupt law and order.

The DIG added that a heavy police contingent had been deployed across Swabi and that further arrests were expected.

Read More: PTI rejects emergency, governor's rule in K-P as unconstitutional, vows to continue struggle

Amid prevailing tensions, the breakdown of negotiations, and Afridi proceeding with the march, President Asif Ali Zardari signed off on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's recommendation to impose emergency rule in K-P amid a deteriorating security situation and the provincial government’s deliberate disengagement from the fight against terrorism.

The proclamation said the provincial government had failed to take adequate measures against terrorism and referred to the governor's report highlighting a breakdown in the constitutional system.

Issued under Articles 232(1) and 234(1), the proclamation declared that the provincial government could not function in accordance with the Constitution under the prevailing circumstances. It empowered the federal government to direct the governor to assume some or all provincial government functions, while the powers of the provincial assembly would be exercised by Parliament or under its authority.

In light of the decision, the federal government took control of K-P's affairs, deploying the army to assist the civil administration, forming an 11-member advisory council and establishing a special administrative structure for 12 districts. Its members are Tariq Mahmood Pasha, Dr Amir Abdullah, Lieutenant General (retd) Nigar Johar, Samar Bilour, Dr Sarfaraz Ali, Aamir Javed, Dr M Irshad, Kifayatullah, Tayyab Qureshi, Usman Saifullah Khan and Asif Rafiq. Sanaullah Advocate was appointed the Provincial Advocate General.

FinMin says govt has another dozen entities in pipeline, including state-owned DISCOs, outsourcing airport operations

Pakistan's economy is expected to grow by more than 4% this fiscal year despite elevated oil prices, as the government looks to ‌push for the privatisation of five to six entities that could raise upwards of $1 billion, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb told Reuters on Monday.

Pakistan's economy is considered to be highly vulnerable to a prolonged Middle East conflict given its dependence on Gulf energy imports, remittances and financing support from the region, even as it remains reliant on external financing to bolster foreign exchange reserves and meet debt repayments.

The South Asian country of 255 million people has been able to procure adequate quantities of fuel, successfully avoiding any shortages, and critical sectors such as agriculture were holding up, Aurangzeb said.

"So I'm still quite clear that we should clock north of 4%," he said in an interview on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Bangkok.

"And on the inflation side, obviously, we are keeping a very close eye because it does have a knock-on impact in terms of the commodity prices."

Following a period of severe economic turmoil exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the cash-strapped economy has recovered some of its footing, supported by a $7 billion, 37-month IMF loan program known as the Extended Fund Facility signed in 2024 that includes some tough measures such as raising tax revenue on farm income.

Exchange stabilisation facility

The US-Israeli-led war with Iran, now in its eighth month, and the inflation and hardship it has caused, will dominate the agenda and sideline conversations during the meetings that ‌are being held outside Washington for the first time in three years.

Pakistan, which reached a staff-level agreement with the IMF last week potentially unlocking about $1.21 billion in financing under the Extended Fund Facility and a climate program, is continuing discussions with the United States for a proposed $10 billion exchange stabilisation facility, Aurangzeb said.

But he declined to provide a time frame for the conclusion of negotiations.

"If it comes through, this will be a great help for us," he said, referring to the facility, which is in addition to ongoing talks with the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) and the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).

"If it doesn't come through, this does not, you know, create any problem for us in terms of access to market."

Privatisation push

Following the privatisation of flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines last year, Aurangzeb said the government has around another dozen entities in the pipeline, including state-owned power distribution companies and the outsourcing of airport operations.

Former opener says selection is unfair to middle-order batsmen and backs Sajid as a third spin option

Former Pakistan Test opener Sadiq Mohammad has questioned the selection of Saim Ayub in the T20I squad, saying the all-rounder’s presence in different batting positions is undermining the team’s middle order batsmen.

“It is an injustice to the middle order batsmen to keep playing Saim Ayub,” Sadiq told The Express Tribune.

“The coaches, selection committee and captain are destroying the middle order. How can Saim fit into every batting position simply because he can bowl a few overs of finger spin?” he said.

Sadiq said that if Pakistan needed a third spinner in T20 internationals, off-spinner Sajid Khan would be a better option.

“If we want a third spinner in T20 cricket, we should give chance to our off-spinner Sajid Khan. He can hit the ball hard, extract turn and is an excellent fielder. We used to play Iftikhar Ahmed in a similar role two years ago,” Sadiq said.

Saim has been included in Pakistan’s T20I squad for the ongoing series against Sri Lanka. He has been batting at number five, while the presence of four specialist openers in the squad has raised questions about the balance of the team’s batting combination.

Saim took one wicket for 19 runs in his three overs on Sunday.

Sajid, meanwhile, has so far been restricted largely to Test cricket, a decision that has raised eyebrows. He was also dropped by his Peshawar team from its T20 side, a decision that reportedly angered the off-spinner.

Sadiq believes Sajid could prove an effective addition to Pakistan’s T20I squad, potentially filling the role previously occupied by Iftikhar Ahmed, who was often used as a power-hitter in the death overs.

Sajid, who has played 16 Tests for Pakistan, is a powerful hitter and has demonstrated his ability to clear the boundary when given the opportunity, even in the longer format.

"Team management should focus on developing a young player for the death overs rather than repeatedly relying on tried-and-tested players based on their mediocre past performances,” Sadiq said.

Sadiq also urged seasoned left-handed opener Fakhar Zaman to go deep and don’t throw his wicket after taking a good start.

“Fakhar Zaman must focus on converting his starts into big individual scores instead of getting out after settling in during the powerplay,” Sadiq said.

“He was dismissed in the fifth over in both innings. If this pattern continues, he could be dropped sooner or later, with Saim Ayub potentially replacing him despite not having proved himself. Both openers have been selected to establish themselves and demonstrate their ability to score big, match-winning totals,” Sadiq said.

Sadiq also pointed out that Shadab has also lost his gloss as a bowler.

"Shadab Khan is another player whose bowling has been largely ineffective. He should also be sidelined, with Sajid Khan considered as a replacement for both Saim Ayub and Shadab."

Sadiq congratulated Pakistan team and skipper Sahibazada Farhan for delivering extremely well in both the T20I matches against Sri Lanka.

"Finally, congratulations on winning the T20 series. Sahibzada Farhan has emerged as a potential new T20 captain, having performed well in both matches. Well played," Sadiq signed off.

Skies over Saudi capital Riyadh largely empty after deadly Houthi strikes on airport

One person was killed and nearly a dozen hurt in a new attack Riyadh's international airport on Sunday, Saudi authorities reported, a day after a strike claimed by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis that killed 13 people and wounded more than 300.

Saudi-led coalition forces in ‌Yemen said an unidentified projectile had targeted Riyadh's international airport Terminal 4 on Sunday, causing a fire. A Pakistani resident was killed and eleven people were wounded, the Saudi civil aviation authority said.

Coalition forces also said Saudi air defences had intercepted a cruise missile in the vicinity of King Khalid International Airport. They later added that a drone had been intercepted and destroyed in the country's Eastern Province, and a ballistic missile launched towards Khamis Mushait had been intercepted. Emergency alerts were also issued in Abha, in the south, early on Monday but the danger had since passed, the Saudi Civil Defence said.

The strikes have exposed vulnerabilities in Saudi defence capabilities as the kingdom wages an air campaign against the Houthis, who are fighting a ground war in Yemen against the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.

Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said the events of recent weeks were serious and the kingdom's response must be "equally serious", as Yemen's Houthis step up attacks on the kingdom, killing more than 15 people in two weeks.

Footage released by Saudi state television of the Saturday attack on the Riyadh airport showed scores of religious pilgrims lined up at a gate as they prepared to travel to Islam's two holiest sites. A bright orange flash sent people running in panic, while parts of the roof appeared to cave in.

Read: Saudi-led coalition says new attack at Riyadh airport causes fire, day after strike kills 13

The airport was closed after the attack, the deadliest in the kingdom in more than a decade.

Skies over Saudi capital Riyadh largely empty after deadly Houthi strikes on airport

The skies above the Saudi capital Riyadh were largely empty on Monday ‌after attacks by Yemen's Houthis on the city's airport, with about 60% of scheduled flights expected to be cancelled, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.

King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia's second-busiest airport after Jeddah, cancelled 99.7% of all scheduled flights on Sunday, Cirium data showed. More than a third of flights scheduled across the kingdom were not expected to operate on Monday, while flight tracking website FlightRadar24 estimated cancellations at Riyadh airport at about 78%.

The Saudi capital's airport remained closed on Sunday after an attack that killed one person and injured nearly a dozen others. The ‌strike followed another attack claimed by the Houthis a day earlier that killed 13 people and wounded more than 300.

The attacks marked one of the most significant disruptions to Saudi civil aviation in years, forcing airlines across Europe and Asia to suspend services. The Federal Aviation Administration told US airlines on Sunday to exercise caution when flying to or over Saudi Arabia.

Lufthansa Group has cancelled all flights to Riyadh until October 16, while Air France-KLM has extended a previous suspension of services to and from the Saudi capital until the end of the month.

Houthis claim responsibility for other attacks

In a televised speech on Sunday, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack and said the group had also struck the airport in Dammam in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province and two facilities of Saudi oil giant Saudi Aramco.

The Saudi government's media office and Aramco did not respond to requests for comment.

The Saudi civil aviation authority confirmed the strike on Dammam's King Fahd International Airport late on Sunday, adding that "damage assessments and safety inspections of airport facilities are under way."

An eyewitness aboard a taxiing aircraft at Dammam told Reuters that around 8:30pm (2230 PKT) on Sunday, they saw a projectile strike the tarmac beside several parked aircraft, causing a fire. The witness said the aircraft returned to the gate. Passengers disembarked and were told to leave.

Flight-tracking website Flightradar24 showed several delays and cancellations on Sunday for arrivals and departures at Dammam airport, the kingdom's third-largest.

The Houthis earlier on Sunday had renewed their warning against using Saudi airports. "We urge everyone to take our warnings seriously, and Saudi Arabia bears responsibility for any failed interceptions," the group said.

The US and Britain's embassy in Saudi ‌Arabia in a post on X advised British citizens against all but essential travel to Jeddah, Dammam and all airports in the kingdom except the airport in Madinah.

US aviation authorities issued a notice to US airlines to use caution while flying to or over the kingdom.

'Worse is yet to come,' Houthis warn

Saudi Arabia has recently stepped up its military involvement in Yemen, launching strikes against the Houthis and backing a government counteroffensive after the Houthis seized strategic territory along the Red Sea coast last month.

The Houthis said on Sunday that Saudi Arabia carried out 124 air strikes in Yemen in the past 24 hours. "Unless the Saudi enemy stops its aggression and interference in Yemen, worse is yet to come, God willing," Yemen's Houthi-run foreign ministry said in statements carried by Al Masirah television.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday the United States was considering joining Saudi strikes on the Houthis in the conflict, a spillover from the wider war with Iran that the US and Israel launched in February.

In a Telegram post, Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said he told his Saudi counterpart that Tehran was ready to help facilitate dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Energy conference still going ahead

A five-day conference of the international energy organisation WPC Energy opened as planned on Sunday at a convention centre about 10 km (6 miles) from the Riyadh airport, the Saudi energy ministry said.

A ministerial meeting of the International Energy Forum also went ahead, according to a media advisory from the ministry. It was not clear which ministers attended.

Italy's energy minister, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, whose country was co-hosting, had said on Friday he would participate remotely via video link.

German officials were trying to organise a return flight for economy minister Katherina Reiche. She was supposed to return to Berlin from Riyadh on Monday but the ministry said it appeared likely her flight would be unable to take off.

Separately, Saudi authorities announced that schools in Riyadh would shift in-person classes to remote learning from Sunday until Thursday.

Sunday's attack brought the death toll in attacks on Riyadh's airport to 18 for the week. In Saturday's attack, the dead included four Saudis while the remainder were foreign nationals, Saudi authorities said.

Isco's brace inspires a 5-2 win over Osasuna

Veteran playmaker Isco struck twice to help Real Betis climb back into third place in La Liga with a 5-2 win over Osasuna on Sunday.

The Andalucian side moved a point above Real Madrid, fourth, and level with second place Atletico Madrid, trailing leaders Barca by five points.

Manuel Pellegrini's side claimed a sixth league win from eight matches with an exciting display of attacking football at La Cartuja stadium, where they are playing until their Benito Villamarin home is renovated, likely 2028.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Isco, 34, netted from the penalty spot after a foul on Rodrigo Riquelme, and Ez Abde doubled the hosts lead after half-an-hour with a cool finish.

Ante Budimir's own goal gave Betis their third after half-time, before the Croatian striker netted at the correct and Raul Garcia added another to give Osasuna a fighting chance.

Isco capitalised on a loose ball in the box to grab his second and Jose Morante bagged a fifth in stoppage time to close out Betis's big win.

"Football is never truly under control," said Pellegrini after his side almost let their three-goal lead slip.

"As soon as the pace drops, the other team can pull level."

The former Manchester City coach also praised Isco after his brace.

"He has spectacular quality and a maturity as a player that allows him to perform at whatever level he wants to," added Pellegrini.

Elsewhere Valencia, 19th, earned a point in a 2-2 draw at Racing Santander under new coach Javier Aguirre.

Real Sociedad defeated Deportivo La Coruna 3-2 in another entertaining battle.

The Basque side, sixth, eased into a three-goal lead Mario Soriano pulled one back for the visitors in San Sebastian to spark a Depor fight back.

They were given further encouragement when Real Sociedad's Pablo Marin was sent off in the 66th minute for a foul on Nsongo Bil in the box and Yeremay Hernandez netted from the penalty spot.

Both teams finished with 10 men after Lorenzo Amatucci brought down Mikel Oyarzabal as the last man, and Depor could not find an equaliser.

On Saturday Liga leaders Barcelona beat Getafe 3-0 to prolong their perfect start to the season, with eight wins from eight league games.

Hansi Flick's side are followed by second place Atletico Madrid, who snatched a late 2-1 win at Alaves, while Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid scraped a 1-0 victory over Villarreal despite Vinicius Junior's red card for hair-pulling.

The Blues cruise to a 3-0 victory at Anfield to maintain their perfect start

Manchester City shrugged off the threat of swingeing sanctions to beat 10-man Liverpool 3-0 in their first game since being found guilty on more than 100 charges of breaking Premier League financial rules.

Second-half goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki extended City's flawless start under Enzo Maresca after Ryan Gravenberch had been sent off for two yellow cards.

City re-established their three-point lead at the top of the table, but the future of any title challenge rests on the outcome of the club's appeal against widespread financial impropriety.

"We need to learn how to deal with the outside noise, but make our own noise, which is to win games," said Maresca.

"Our fans were singing at the end, so the noise was from us."

An independent commission found City and their Emirati owners arranged "sham" deals to artificially inflate revenues and reduce costs by more than £900 million ($1.2 billion) between 2009 and 2018.

No sanction has yet been handed down, but a severe points deduction or even expulsion from the English top flight are on the table unless City overturn the decision.

There has even been speculation there could be retrospective action to strip titles.

"The uncertainty is not good for anyone," said Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola.

The multiple breaches of Premier League laws came during a period in which City won three titles and a clutch of other trophies.

City's rivals believe, however, that the illegal spending during that period also built the foundations for a golden era under former boss Pep Guardiola, who left at the end of last season.

Liverpool were one of the clubs most affected, having finished second to City three times in the past 12 years.

"City have fundamentally cheated to win those leagues," Jamie Gallaghie, a 48-year-old teacher, told AFP.

The visitors arrived under the protection of a police escort with a hostile Anfield welcome expected, but there was no repeat of the violent scenes when their team bus was pelted by bottles ahead of a Champions League clash in 2018.

' A generation of supporters cheated'

Liverpool fans lined the streets to greet the City players with chants of "cheats" and "going down", while merchandise stalls were littered with flags and scarves mocking their rivals' financial scandal.

In the iconic Kop end behind one goal a banner read "a generation of supporters cheated."

The battles between Guardiola's City and Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in recent years became the Premier League's marquee event.

But with the eyes of the world watching, Liverpool failed to rise to the occasion on the field.

New Liverpool boss Iraola's options were blunted without the injured Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo as the Spaniard suffered his first defeat since taking charge of the Reds.

An Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008 transformed City from mid-table mediocrity into the dominant force of the English game.

City's economic might was on full show and helped turn the game as Maresca could introduce Doku off the bench early in the second half.

Within minutes the Belgian winger had been chopped down by Gravenberch, who was shown a harsh second booking, and Liverpool never recovered.

Doku's deflected shot was then smashed home by Haaland to break the deadlock 25 minutes from time, opening the floodgates.

Three minutes later Doku curled a sensational strike into the top corner himself.

Cherki then exchanged a slick one-two with Josko Gvardiol before slotting under Alisson Becker to rub salt in Liverpool wounds.

The defeat leaves Liverpool nine points adrift of the leaders down in ninth.

The Eagles recover from Ndoye's early strike to claim a 3-1 victory

Nottingham Forest boss Oliver Glasner was beaten on his return to Crystal Palace as Daichi Kamada's first Premier League goal inspired the Eagles' 3-1 win on Sunday.

Glasner was back in south London for the first time since leaving Palace at the end of last season.

The 52-year-old Austrian led Palace to a shock FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City in 2025 and masterminded their UEFA Conference League success in May.

Glasner opted to quit Selhurst Park after reported issues with the club's hierarchy over their transfer policy, opening the way for his move to Forest.

He was greeted warmly by Palace fans before kick-off and it looked like being a victorious return for Glasner when Forest's Dan Ndoye opened the scoring in the third minute.

But Forest wasted a host of chances to increase their lead and Japan midfielder Kamada levelled in the 41st minute to end his long wait for a top-flight goal.

Jefferson Lerma nodded Palace in front in first-half stoppage time and Yeremy Pino's 59th-minute goal sent Glasner home empty-handed.

It was a first home league victory for Palace boss Pierre Sage, who was hired from Lens after Glasner's departure.

Glasner joined Forest in the wake of tension between the clubs, sparked by the legal fallout from Palace's demotion to the Conference League before the 2025-26 season, with Forest taking their place in the Europa League.

The Forest boss did not escape with a cheeky send-off from the Palace supporters, who chanted "you're getting sacked in the morning" chant minutes before the final whistle.

Forest sit in 14th place, with Palace climbing above them into 12th.

Hull extended their unbeaten home record since returning to the Premier League with an 2-2 draw against Everton at the MKM Stadium.

Joe Gelhardt opened the scoring for Hull in the 48th minute following an error by Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall equalised seven minutes later, with Thierno Barry putting Everton ahead in the 68th minute.

Hull responded swiftly as substitute Mohamed Belloumi levelled in the 74th minute.

Fifth-placed Everton remain unbeaten in six league games, while ninth-placed Hull have lost just one of their six matches since earning promotion last season.

Roma, Juventus and Milan all dropped points in a frustrating weekend for title contenders

Lazio moved level on points with Inter Milan at the top of Serie A with a 3-1 win over Monza on Sunday as pursuers Roma, Juventus and AC Milan were all held.

Ten-man Roma could not keep pace as Donyell Malen's red card overshadowed a 0-0 stalemate in Como. They now sit two points behind the leaders in third.

AC Milan were held 1-1 at Sassuolo to leave them four points adrift of the leaders in fifth.

Surprise package Cagliari continued their impressive start to the season by holding Juventus 1-1 to remain fourth, two points above the Turin giants in sixth.

Under Gennaro Gattuso, who has bounced back after his failure at the helm of the Italian national side who missed out on the 2026 World Cup, Lazio continued their strong start to the season.

Still unbeaten, the Roman outfit secured a fifth victory in six matches to pull level on 16 points with Inter, who beat Parma 3–0 at the San Siro on Saturday.

"We can't look at the standings, otherwise we will get dizzy. We have to take it day by day," said Gattuso.

Their run comes despite ongoing fan protests against owner Claudio Lotito that have left Lazio's home matches sparsely attended amid a stadium boycott.

Nuno Tavares gave Lazio a third-minute lead with a spectacular long-range strike and Gustav Isaksen doubled it midway through the first half.

Monza had Lorenzo Lucchesi sent off on 35 minutes for hauling down Tijjani Noslin as he broke through on goal, but the 16th-placed visitors rattled Lazio after the break, pulling a goal back and coming close to equalising before conceding a third goal in the closing stages.

Tempers flare

In Sardinia, Juventus required a late equaliser from Randal Kolo Muani to rescue a point after Daniel Maldini's opener as tempers flared between the coaches.

Maldini, son of AC Milan legend Paolo, struck for the fourth game in a row to mark his 25th birthday in style.

Juventus dominated possession but struggled to carve out clear-cut chances against a Cagliari side boasting the best defensive record in the league until Kolo Muani headed home in the 81st minute.

The France international almost completed the comeback four minutes later when he rattled the underside of the bar from close range, but the hosts held on to take a draw before tempers spilled over at full-time as opposing coaches Fabio Pisacane and Luciano Spalletti were shown red cards.

"Nothing happened. I told him they play good football and are good at wasting time," Spalletti explained when asked what led to the fracas.

"(Pisacane) said 'what do you mean wasting time?' And they kicked us both out. It was nothing major, all pretty normal," he added.

Ruben Amorim's Milan maintained their unbeaten start but drew for the third time in their last four league games.

Matteo Gabbia went off injured early on with the breakthrough not coming until the 63rd minute when Luka Modric slipped in Adrien Rabiot to fire home a powerful finish.

Milan's lead lasted just five minutes before substitute Cas Odenthal turned in the equaliser in a crowded box from a corner.

"We deserved to take the lead, but then after the goal we didn't control the game," Amorim said.

"When we had the ball, we lost it really fast. That can happen, but what cannot happen is to concede that goal on the corner."

Roma continued their unbeaten start against Como but could only pick up a point in the first goalless draw of the Serie A season.

The dismissal of league top scorer Malen for a dangerous tackle early in the second half forced Roma to scale back their ambitions after a bright start where Lorenzo Pellegrini hit the post and Paulo Dybala squandered a glorious chance.

Neither team could find the breakthrough in a clash between two sides widely regarded as dark horses for the title.

Bologna picked up their first win of the season by beating Lecce 2-1.

Says it's not a 'political move', government has paid heavy political price for difficult decisions in the past

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday defended the federal government’s decision to impose emergency measures in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), saying it had “no choice” but to act to protect citizens from terrorism.

“When it comes to the safety and security of our nationals, our citizens, wherever they live, any part of Pakistan, I think it is the duty of the federal government,” DPM Dar said at a conference on Pakistan’s evolving counter-terrorism landscape.

The federal government imposed governor’s rule in K-P on Sunday, with President Asif Ali Zardari approving Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s advice under Article 234 of the Constitution. The decision came amid tensions between the Centre and the PTI-led provincial government over the security situation and counter-terrorism efforts. The PTI rejected the move as unconstitutional and vowed to resist it.

He said the government had determined that there was no alternative to the measures it had taken. “It’s not a political move. It is surely against the menace of terrorism which the province has been hit with in the last decade and a half,” he said. “Can we keep sleeping and looking towards another because it's a political move? No, it's not. I can guarantee you.”

DPM Dar said the government had paid a heavy political price for difficult decisions in the past, including economic measures taken when Pakistan was on the brink of default, and that "whatever costs" the government has to pay to save the economy, to protect property and lives of the people, "I think it is never too much."

He expressed confidence that the measures would produce results in the coming weeks and months, saying he hoped peace would return to the province, lives would be protected and radicalisation would end.

DPM Dar also referred to his experience of negotiating with the same political party in 2014, when a sit-in continued in Islamabad for 126 days, saying the government did not consider political differences a reason to avoid engagement. However, he maintained that public safety had to take precedence when the government believed action was necessary.

Losses in war against terrorism

DPM Dar said Pakistan had paid an enormous human, economic and reputational price for terrorism, with economic losses exceeding $150 billion. “Mind you, Pakistan's total external debt is 130 billion dollars,” he said.

“The cost does not end here.”

He said terrorism had tarnished Pakistan’s international image and undermined confidence in the country, while the damage to its reputation and the opportunities lost during that period were incalculable.

“Pakistan has borne a dual burden: fighting terrorism, not countering the misperceptions that have too often obscured our sacrifices,” he said.

Recalling attacks on civilians, Dar referred to the children killed at the Army Public School in Peshawar, bombings at mosques, markets and bus stops, passengers taken hostage on a train, and labourers killed because of where they came from. “These are not just statistics. This is the price the Pakistani nation has paid and continues paying,” he said.

He said the government had made counter-terrorism a national priority, renewed national efforts and placed greater emphasis on implementing the National Action Plan. The Federal Apex Committee had brought together civilian and military leadership to review threats and agree on measures to address them, he said.

DPM Dar said the prime minister had approved the Azm-e-Istehkam initiative with the consensus of the provinces and other stakeholders. The initiative brought together military, intelligence, law enforcement and diplomatic efforts to target terrorists and the networks sustaining them while addressing conditions that allowed extremism to take root.

He said the government had also agreed on measures to improve intelligence coordination and strengthen the role of the National Counter Terrorism Authority.

“These efforts require close cooperation between the Federation and the provinces,” he said. “Every institution has a responsibility and the national effort must continue with unity and resolve.”

DPM Dar commended PM Shehbaz for his leadership and sustained attention to counter-terrorism. He also paid tribute to the Chief of Defence Forces and the Chief of Army Staff and Field Marshal Asim Munir, saying the armed forces, working closely with law enforcement agencies, continued operations against terrorists and their facilitators.

“They confront this danger daily, often at the cost of their own lives,” he said.

Efforts to engage with Afghanistan not yielded results

The deputy prime minister highlighted the repeated diplomatic efforts Pakistan had made to secure action against terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory, while seeking stronger economic and regional ties with Afghanistan.

He referred to three visits to Kabul in 2025, including a visit on April 19 after a four-year stalemate in relations, followed by another visit in July with the Uzbek foreign minister.

During the April visit, DPM Dar said he held detailed discussions with Afghanistan’s acting Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar and Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

He said the discussions covered trade, the economy, refugees and political matters, among other issues. Pakistan had subsequently delivered on commitments it had made to Afghanistan, he said.

“What does Pakistan ask? Only one. Please do not allow your soil to be used against any country, particularly Pakistan, for terrorism,” he said.

Pakistan had continued to pursue engagement, upgraded diplomatic representation and worked towards regional connectivity, including a proposed railway linking Pakistan and Uzbekistan through Afghanistan to Central Asia, he said.

In August 2025, Dar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had visited Kabul for a trilateral dialogue, he added. “These were the sincere efforts on behalf of Pakistan,” Dar said. “But the one ask, we are not seeing a result, unfortunately, so far.”

He said Pakistan wanted Afghanistan to become stable and prosperous and believed in the future of the Afghan people. However, he said, the Afghan Taliban authorities needed to honour their counter-terrorism commitments and ensure Afghan territory was not used to launch attacks, particularly against Pakistan.

“Sadly, as I said, we can no longer ignore the continuing terrorist threat emanating from Afghanistan,” he said.

DPM Dar referred to reports by the United Nations monitoring mechanisms documenting the presence of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan and its close links with Al-Qaeda. He said the threat had implications for regional security beyond Pakistan.

“Just imagine, if Pakistan was not fighting this war as a frontline fighter, this terrorism, God knows, would have spread by now to rich parts of the globe,” he said.

He stated that attacks inside Pakistan were planned, directed and launched from across the border, with terrorists infiltrating Pakistan, attacking soldiers and civilians before retreating to their sanctuaries.

Pakistan had invested heavily in border fencing and management at considerable financial and human cost, he said. “But no fence can substitute for real action against these terrorist sanctuaries,” he said.

DPM Dar said Pakistan had raised its concerns directly and repeatedly, shared specific information and sought concrete action against terrorist groups and the sanctuaries from which attacks against Pakistan were launched.

He also cited Pakistan’s decision to allow humanitarian aid to pass into Afghanistan despite a border closure following a wave of attacks in October 2025. He said the United Nations had approached Pakistan’s Foreign Office for permission and that the country had allowed 1,000 containers of humanitarian aid to cross the border, a process that took almost a month.

He said the decision demonstrated Pakistan’s commitment to Afghanistan’s development and prosperity.

The minister also recalled his efforts as finance minister to secure approval for the CASA-1000 energy project linking Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The project had been suspended by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund following political changes in Afghanistan, he said, but efforts had since been made to revive it.

He said Pakistan’s willingness to pursue economic cooperation had not diminished despite its security concerns.

DPM Dar also recounted a conversation with Akhund during his July 2025 visit, saying the Afghan leader had thanked Pakistan for delivering on commitments within eight weeks.

“If you do not take appropriate actions against the terrorist groups in Afghanistan, the day will come, if your government is there, they will haunt you as well and you will be facing threats from the same terrorists in Afghanistan,” Dar said he had told him.

DPM Dar described the TTP as one of the greatest threats to Pakistan’s security, saying it had been responsible for some of the worst terrorist attacks in the country’s history, including attacks on schools, mosques, markets and security installations.

He said the group’s victims included civilians as well as members of the security forces.

He also accused the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) of targeting civilians and security personnel while seeking to undermine Pakistan’s economic development.

Among the incidents he cited was the hijacking of the Jaffar Express in March 2025, when more than 400 passengers were taken hostage. He also referred to attacks on passenger buses, targeted killings of civilians in Rojhan, and assaults on security installations and infrastructure critical to Pakistan’s economic development.

— Pakistan TV (@PakTVGlobal) October 12, 2026

DPM Dar said the groups did not operate in isolation and benefited from external support, including networks providing fighters, funding, weapons and training.

“Pakistan has repeatedly called for action against the support and the sanctuaries that enable their attacks,” he said. “A group that finds safe haven today to attack Pakistan can use the same safe haven tomorrow to threaten others.”

He warned that ignoring the TTP and its supporters would not eliminate the threat but would give them time to grow.

He said Pakistan had consistently raised concerns with the international community about what it alleged was Indian support for terrorist organisations operating against Pakistan, including from Afghanistan.

Pakistan had shared information with the United Nations and international partners documenting alleged Indian support for groups including the TTP and other proxies operating from Afghan territory, he added.

DPM Dar referred to former Indian naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, who confessed to involvement in terrorist activities, as well as what DPM Dar described as a record of extraterritorial assassinations, including in North America.

He said alleged state sponsorship of terrorism had been documented and argued that the issue went beyond Pakistan’s bilateral disputes with India.

“When a state uses terrorist groups as instruments of policy against a neighbour, it puts the peace of the wider region at complete risk,” he said. “It undermines international law and relations between the states. Such support must be confronted without political considerations or double standards.”

Stronger bilateral cooperation

The minister stated that Pakistan was working to strengthen multilateral cooperation against terrorism and had used its position on the United Nations Security Council to advance international action.

He said Pakistan, an elected member of the Security Council for 2025-26, had chaired the 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee and served as a vice-chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee.

These responsibilities provided opportunities to advance international cooperation and the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions, he said.

Pakistan had also chaired the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure during 2025-26 and used the forum to promote regional cooperation, he said.

The deputy prime minister added that bilateral counter-terrorism dialogue, including with the United States, formed another part of Pakistan’s efforts to address shared threats and strengthen practical cooperation.

“Pakistan’s sacrifices deserve recognition, but recognition alone is not enough,” he said.

He called for timely intelligence sharing, access to technology and further capacity-building support for law enforcement agencies. He also urged effective international action against terrorist financing, weapons supplies and the provision of safe havens.

“States must ensure that their territory is not used for terrorism against any other country,” he said.

He also urged Pakistan’s partners to impress upon the Afghan authorities the need to fulfil their commitments. “A threat that endangers the region and the world cannot leave Pakistan to confront alone,” he said.

Modern-day warfare

DPM Dar warned that terrorist groups were adapting their methods, using social media and encrypted platforms to recruit and radicalise people, raising funds through cryptocurrencies and other digital channels, and experimenting with drones and artificial intelligence to spread propaganda.

He said young people were increasingly exposed to extremist propaganda online and that individuals radicalised through digital platforms could carry out attacks without warning.

Modern weaponry was also finding its way into the hands of terrorist groups, making the work of security forces more difficult, he said. “No state or society can combat these challenges alone,” he said. “We need to share technology, intelligence, and experience.”

Above all, he said, governments needed the political resolve to act against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, without distinction or excuse.

“Those who killed our children in Peshawar claim to act in the name of Islam. They did not,” he said.

DPM Dar referred to the Quranic principle that killing one human being was equivalent to killing all humanity, saying the principle did not distinguish between people on the basis of religion.

“They are criminals, they speak for no faith or religion, and they have no nationality or boundary,” he said, referring to terrorists. “Terrorism must never be equated with any religion, nationality, civilisation, or ethnicity.”

He added that Islamophobia divided communities and provided terrorists with the propaganda they sought. He said the response to terrorism had to remain firm while rejecting attempts to associate terrorism with a particular faith or community.

Counter-terrorism should not suppress self-determination

DPM Dar said counter-terrorism efforts should not be used as a pretext to suppress legitimate struggles for self-determination recognised under the United Nations Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.

He referred to Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, saying that Pakistan had promoted multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes during its Security Council presidency the previous year.

DPM Dar cited Resolution 2788, which he said had been unanimously adopted after 12 years without a similar unanimous resolution on the issue. He said the resolution’s principles had subsequently been referenced in discussions at the United Nations during the Thailand-Cambodia conflict.

“Those who used to call Pakistan, probably because of the terrorism we have been actually fighting, a terrorist or some other state, now they are very happy to call Pakistan a peacemaker state after what we have done in the last few years,” he said.

He also referred to Pakistan’s efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran, saying the two sides had held direct talks for the first time in 47 years with Pakistan’s participation.

The deputy prime minister said an agreement reached on June 18 had subsequently been violated by both sides, but Pakistan had not abandoned its diplomatic efforts. “As late as just days before, in the high week of the UN General Assembly, on the sidelines of New York, we are making all possible efforts,” he said.

He also referred to the growing strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, saying developments affecting these waterways had wider implications for regional and international security.

Makkah defence framework

Concluding his speech, DPM Dar stated that Pakistan had entered into a joint defence agreement signed in Makkah on August 7, with its inaugural meeting held in Istanbul on August 31.

He said Pakistan had the honour of providing the first secretary-general for a three-year term and that the headquarters would be in Riyadh. A working committee was finalising the programme and operational details, he said.

The framework included a Strategic, Political and Defence Committee comprising the foreign ministers, defence ministers and army chiefs of the three participating countries, he said.

“The idea is not any offensive. The idea is totally objective and defensive,” he said. “So it is for self-defence. And it is nothing which is against any international law or charter.”

DPM Dar cited Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which recognises the right to individual and collective self-defence, and compared the principle with the basis on which NATO was established.

He said the ultimate objective was to promote peace and closer ties in the region, rather than target any other country.

The agreement was also not restricted permanently to the three founding participants, he said, adding that its provisions would allow other countries to join once the framework was fully established, potentially within a year.

DPM Dar said Pakistan’s counter-terrorism policy, diplomatic engagement and defence cooperation were all aimed at improving security while promoting regional stability and peaceful relations.

The German defeats Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7 (8/10), 6-3 to keep his bid for a maiden world number one ranking on track

Alexander Zverev was forced to dig deep in beating Quentin Halys in three sets at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday as he closes in on the world number one ranking.

The German top seed belatedly saw off the Frenchman 6-4, 6-7 (8/10), 6-3 to reach the last 16, despite moving a little uncomfortably at the end.

"He plays unbelievably aggressive and serves incredibly," Zverev, himself one of the biggest servers on tour, said of his beaten opponent.

"This year I have been picking my tournaments and places where I want to peak, I did not do that early in my career.

"It paid off, I won two Grand Slams and reached the Wimbledon final."

Zverev cut a frustrated figure at times, barking at his corner even as he clinched the first set against the 48th-ranked Halys in 38 minutes.

The second set was much closer, going with serve and taking them into the tie-break.

Zverev unleashed a delicious backhand down the line to avoid going down 6-4 in the tie-break, but then squandered a match point when he shanked a forehand return.

A second match point came and went, and Halys took full advantage to force a deciding set courtesy of an overhead smash.

The third was poised for another battle, but Zverev broke for 2-0 and behind his reliable serve powered home for victory.

Zverev, the world number two, is an imminent threat to Jannik Sinner's number one ranking.

The US Open and French Open winner has never topped the rankings.

The Italian Sinner is not playing in Shanghai because of injury, opening the door for the 29-year-old Zverev to usurp him.

World number three Carlos Alcaraz is in action on Monday.

Olympic champion beats Andreeva 7-5, 6-4. to become first home winner

Zheng Qinwen became the first home winner of the China Open on Sunday as she beat Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4.

The former world number four and current Olympic champion was a wildcard entry in Beijing, having struggled with form and fitness after elbow surgery in 2025.

It was the 54th-ranked Zheng's first title in nearly two years.

Zheng, 24, is the first Chinese player to win the tournament since its inception in 2004.

Andreeva, ranked five, was more consistent to start with, but Zheng grabbed back a break and stayed with her 19-year-old opponent as they battled on the baseline.

Zheng saved three set points to level 5-5 and won every single point after that, sending down an ace to grab the lead.

A crowd desperate to see their homegrown talent crowned champion was at times disruptive as cheers erupted before points ended and shouts for Zheng punctuated serves on both sides of the net.

But the players kept their focus, holding serve until Zheng found a way through in the ninth game of the second set, firing brilliantly against the line to break and go up 5-4.

A double-fault threatened to derail an imminent triumph until Zheng, defiant, sent down an ace to win on her first match point.

It is Zheng's first trophy since October 2024 when she beat Sofia Kenin in Tokyo, and her first-ever title at the prestigious WTA 1000 level.

The players' only previous meeting was in the 2024 China Open quarter-finals, where Zheng beat Andreeva in three sets.

The Kenyan clocks a personal-best 2:01:09 to finish nearly two minutes clear

Amos Kipruto of Kenya dominated a world-class field to finally win his first Chicago Marathon while Ethiopia's Hawi Feysa defended her women's title on Sunday.

Kipruto's time of 2:01:09 was a new personal best and vindication for the 34-year-old, who had finished second in Chicago last year and third the previous edition.

This time, Kipruto pulled clear of defending champion and pre-race favorite Jacob Kiplimo at mile 21 and never looked back.

"Today's race was really good for me... I came here 2024, I became position three, 2025 I became position two. And now 2026 it was either win or die for me," said Kipruto.

He finished the 48th Chicago Marathon nearly two minutes clear in ideal sunny but cool conditions, briefly sinking to the floor after he crossed the finish line, before quickly rising with a giant grin.

Kipruto, the 2022 London champion, had set his previous personal best finishing fourth at this year's historic London race, where the mythical two-hour barrier was broken.

But he had the spotlight to himself in Chicago.

"The preparation for me toward the Chicago Marathon 2026 was perfect for me. I improved a lot in training for the previous London Marathon," said Kipruto.

"But I said 'let's go (for) Chicago' and let be what will be. Everything is all about a mindset. It was a tough field, but I set my mind and I said 'let's go.'"

His time makes him the joint-fifth fastest marathon runner of all time.

Uganda's Kiplimo ultimately slipped back to fourth place.

Tadese Takele Bikila of Ethiopia -- the defending Tokyo champion, making his US marathon debut -- took second, while compatriot Milkesa Mengesha came third.

'Elated'

On the women's side, defending champion Feysa also set a new personal best with a blistering 2:13:33.

"I'm elated to have won the second time," said Feysa, via an interpreter.

She was followed by Sharon Lokedi of Kenya, this year's Boston winner, who stayed with Feysa most of the race but finished 34 seconds back.

"It certainly became quite a battle, especially after the pacemaker dropped out around 33k. But around 35k, that's when I became pretty sure I had this in the bag," said Feysa.

Fellow Kenyan Brigid Kosgei, who set a then-world record of 2:14:04 in Chicago in 2019, continued her fine recent form with third place.

The 32-year-old -- a two-time winner in London, Tokyo and Chicago -- won last year's Shanghai Marathon and took this year's Tokyo title.

More than 55,000 runners competed over the 26.2-mile layout winding through the streets of Chicago.

Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland shattered her own women's wheelchair world record with a time of 1:33:16.

The hosts defend a total of 223 to move ahead in the five-match series with two games remaining

Abhishek Sharma struck a quick 69 before Arshdeep Singh's three wickets helped India to a 14-run win over the West Indies in the third T20 international on Sunday.

Opener Abhishek's 30-ball assault guided India to 223 all out, a total their bowlers defended by restricting West Indies to 209-7 in Indore, giving them 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

"It was wonderful to see the bowlers being confident," India captain Shreyas Iyer said.

"The clarity was very much visible when I was interacting. They were ready to take up the challenge and that's what we want."

The previous two games had been won by the team batting second, as the West Indies knocked off a target of 250 to level the series on Friday, pulling off the second highest successful chase in T20Is.

Abhishek handed India a quick start as he put on 108 runs with fellow left-hander Ishan Kishan, who made 37, after India were put in to bat.

Sanju Samson fell for just three before India's batters responded with regular boundaries, Abhishek reaching his fifty off 18 balls.

Spinner Roston Chase broke the stand as he removed Kishan and then dismissed Iyer for one in the same over.

Pace bowler Shamar Springer cut short Abhishek's knock, which featured six fours and five sixes, as India began to wobble.

'Little margins'

Tilak Varma (28) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (21) kept the score ticking over as wickets continued to fall.

Lower-order contributions from Axar Patel, who hit 20, and Prince Yadav, who made an unbeaten 13 off six balls, boosted the total.

"Probably with the ball, we could've executed a little bit better," said West Indies skipper Shai Hope. "So those little margins would be the deciding factor come the end of the game."

In reply, West Indies Hope, who made an unbeaten 102 in the previous series-levelling win, for five off left-arm quick Arshdeep before Shimron Hetmyer hit the same bowler for a six and three fours in a 19-run over.

Hetmyer made 43 off 26 balls before being dismissed by Naman Dhir and Rovman Powell fell for five as West Indies slipped in their chase.

Dhir struck again to send back opener Kamil Pooran, who hit a 27-ball 42, to reduce the opposition to 105-4 in the 11th over.

Sherfane Rutherford attempted to repeat his heroics for the second game, clubbing 32 off 20 before Arshdeep bowled him in the 18th over to effectively extinguish West Indies' hopes.

The fourth match is on Wednesday in Hyderabad.

The Dutchman beats Charles Leclerc by 7.335 seconds, with Kimi Antonelli third

Max Verstappen won the Singapore Grand Prix for the first time in his career on Sunday to complete a perfect weekend where he also finished first in the sprint and was on pole for both races.

Red Bull's Verstappen finished 7.335sec ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc with championship leader Kimi Antonelli third for Mercedes after 62 laps under the lights of the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

The four-time world champion had never won or even achieved a pole position in nine previous attempts going back to his debut for Toro Rosso in 2015.

"It has taken a while but I think this race was very good," said a delighted Verstappen, who was celebrating back-to-back wins after triumphing in Malaysia seven days ago, his first victory of 2026.

"We had pace when we needed to have it on the soft tyre and the medium. So of course very happy to win here," the Dutchman added after claiming the top step of the podium on his 250th grand prix start.

"I think the last few races have been really positive for us, we have a lot of motivation in the team to try and deliver even more results.

"Hopefully we can have a bit more fun until the end of the year."

The McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were fourth and fifth, ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who dropped from third on the grid to sixth after botching his tyre strategy.

Liam Lawson's RB was seventh, Nico Hulkenberg eighth in the Audi and George Russell, who started from the back of the grid because of engine penalties, came home ninth in his Mercedes.

"It was a very tough race out there, but really happy with a podium in the end," said Antonelli, who increased his championship lead to 102 points over Russell.

Isack Hadjar in the second Red Bull, who started from the pit lane, rounded out the points scorers in 10th.

"We were quite strong at the beginning of the race, then we started degrading," said Leclerc.

"We did a different strategy to Max, I gave it my all and I don't regret anything. I don't think there was much more to do today."

'Sorry boys'

Verstappen was put under immediate pressure from the quick-reacting Leclerc as he launched from pole position at lights out.

The Dutchman had to swoop across to his left to cut off the Ferrari driver and stay ahead into turn one.

Leclerc stuck to the rear of Verstappen through the first few laps as his teammate Hamilton kept Antonelli at bay.

Hamilton was the only one of the front-runners to start on the slower medium tyres and he was the first to pit, taking on fresh soft rubber on lap 19.

Verstappen left it until lap 32 to stop, and once all the top six had pitted, the order was the same as at the start.

Antonelli and Leclerc dived for a second time under a virtual safety car caused by Lance Stroll's Aston Martin breaking down.

But Hamilton bafflingly decided to stay out on much older tyres, despite being called in by his team, an aberration that would cost the seven-time world champion a podium finish.

Leclerc on fresh rubber quickly passed Hamilton for second.

Norris attempted to overtake Hamilton at the start of lap 55 only to lose his place to Antonelli, who then picked off the Ferrari to move up to third.

"I managed to take advantage of the fight with Lando and Lewis, and very happy with that," said Antonelli.

Norris did get past Hamilton, whose tyres were shot, on the next lap followed by Piastri.

"Sorry boys. I let you down today with that strategy," said Hamilton on team radio.

"My call, and I lost us valuable points. I'll try and make up for it in the next one."

Smith breaks Test catching record as visitors take 106-run lead.

Steve Smith broke the Test record for the most career catches by a fielder as Australia played themselves into a strong position on the third day of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead on Sunday.

Smith held four catches, taking his total to 223, as South Africa were bowled out for 284 in reply to Australia’s first innings of 390.

Nic Maddinson (17 not out) and Travis Head (10 not out) added 33 runs off just 5.4 overs to stretch Australia’s overall lead to 139 before bad light ended play for the third day in a row.

Maddinson, who laboured to a 33-ball duck in the first innings, hit two fours off Marco Jansen in the first over of the second innings and added a six off Wiaan Mulder before play was called off.

Australia’s bowlers applied relentless pressure on an easy-paced pitch and a succession of South African batsmen contributed to their own dismissals by playing poor shots.

Six Protea batters reached 30 but David Bedingham’s 49 was the top score.

Australian captain Pat Cummins took three for 54 and Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon took two each as Australia’s long-serving bowling quartet combined with customary efficiency.

Smith started the day on 219 catches, one behind Joe Root of England.

He equalled the record when he caught South African captain Temba Bavuma. Standing at slip, he anticipated Bavuma's reverse sweep against off-spinner Nathan Lyon and moved to his right with Bavuma's mistimed shot going straight to him.

Smith, playing in his 126th Test, broke the record when he lunged to his left from second slip to hold a sharp edge from Bedingham off Australian captain Pat Cummins.

Smith thought he had taken another catch when he held a low edge from Wiaan Mulder at slip in the over before lunch. Mulder started walking off the field but the umpires reviewed the incident and decided the ball had not carried.

But Smith was in the action again with a spectacular catch to dismiss Kyle Verreynne, again anticipating well at slip as the South African wicketkeeper made good contact with a reverse sweep which Smith held in an outstretched right hand.

His fourth catch was from an edge to slip by last man Anrich Nortje off the bowling of Beau Webster.

Smith’s career haul of 223 catches exceeds the total of all but 11 specialist wicketkeepers.

Brief scores:

Australia 390 and 33-0

South Africa, first innings, 284 (A. Markram 37, D Bedingham 49, T. Stubbs 32, W. Mulder 30, S. Hermer 35 not out, K. Maharaj 34; M. Starc 2-63, J. Hazlewood 2-54, P. Cummins 3-54, N. Lyon 2-58)

Match situation: Australia lead by 139 runs with 10 wickets remaining in the second innings

Toss: Australia

Sources say security operations proved effective in dismantling terrorist networks, restricting their movement

Security forces killed one terrorist during an intelligence-based operation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's (K-P's) Bannu district, security sources said on Monday.

The operation was carried out based on confirmed intelligence, the sources said, adding that security forces were maintaining close surveillance on the movement and presence of Fitna al-Khawarij in the area.

Fitna al-Khawarij is the term the state uses for terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The operation was part of ongoing security efforts under the Azm-e-Istehkam vision to counter terrorism in the province, according to the sources. They said security operations had proved effective in dismantling terrorist networks and restricting their movement.

Security forces remained committed to eliminating terrorism from K-P, the sources said, adding that operations would continue until the last terrorist was eliminated.

Earlier this month, 12 people were killed and 35 others injured when a blast struck a joint checkpoint near Aman Mela in the Darazinda area of Dera Ismail Khan, with the TTP claiming responsibility for the attack.

On September 19, 23 people, including 15 police personnel, were martyred in a blast at a mosque in Kohat’s Police Lines during Friday prayers. Eight terrorists were also killed during a subsequent search and clearance operation. Later, the Ittihadul Mujahideen Pakistan (IMP), led by Afghanistan-based Hafiz Gul Bahadur, claimed responsibility for the deadly bombing and rampage involving multiple attackers.

In a separate incident, a captain and a lieutenant were among six security personnel martyred in an exchange of fire in Hangu district, while eight terrorists were killed.

According to two security reports presented to the federal cabinet yesterday, terrorist incidents in K-P increased by 195% between March 1, 2024, and September 23, 2026, while drone attacks rose sharply, with the provincial police and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) facing serious shortages of modern weapons, operational equipment and trained personnel.

The reports, prepared by the K-P police and intelligence agencies, were presented by Director General Intelligence Bureau (IB) Fuad Asadullah. According to the reports, the sharp rise in terrorist attacks over the past two years had become a serious security challenge for the province.

They attributed the worsening situation to terrorist elements based in Afghanistan, local facilitators, what they described as the provincial government's flawed policies and its soft approach towards militants, as well as inadequate preparedness and counterterrorism measures at the provincial level.

The reports said 73% of terrorist attacks recorded in K-P during 2026 targeted police and security personnel, underscoring the growing pressure on law enforcement agencies.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy says oil tanker struck mine in Strait of Hormuz

Iran said on Monday that it is reviewing US proposals for negotiations as Tehran and Washington continue to exchange messages through mediators.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei told his weekly press conference that Pakistan and Qatar continue to play a mediating role between Iran and the US.

“The exchange of messages between Iran and the US through mediators continues,” Baghaei said.

“We are reviewing the Americans’ proposals for negotiations. Iran’s preconditions must be observed for any negotiations,” he added.

— IRNA News Agency ☫ (@IrnaEnglish) October 12, 2026

Baghaei said Russia also continues to play a “constructive” role regarding Iran’s nuclear file, pointing to Moscow’s involvement in the 2015 nuclear agreement.

He said Iranian and Russian relations are based on mutual trust and that Tehran welcomes supportive efforts by friendly countries, but stressed that, “technically and precisely,” mediation between Iran and the US remains in the hands of countries such as Pakistan and Qatar.

Strait of Hormuz

Turning to the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei said developments there were a direct consequence of US and Israeli attacks on Iran and rejected suggestions that Tehran’s actions were intended to create negotiating leverage.

“What we have seen in the Strait of Hormuz since February 28 was the direct result of the US and the Israeli regime’s attack on Iran,” he said.

“With the current US approach, security will not return,” he added.

Baghaei rejected US assertions that Iran had lost its leverage, saying such claims did not correspond with realities on the ground.

“They can say Iran has lost its leverage, but we are doing our work,” he said, arguing that energy markets were not responding to Washington’s assertions.

Baghaei also expressed “deep concern” over continuing tensions on the Arab Peninsula and said Tehran was ready to facilitate dialogue between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen.

“We do not want war and hostilities to continue between two Islamic countries,” he said.

The spokesman said Iran’s consultations with regional countries were continuing and that Tehran had repeatedly offered to help facilitate dialogue and a peaceful settlement.

Strait of Hormuz is part of Iran’s national security: Official

Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, said the Strait of Hormuz is part of Iran’s national security, and that the country will continue to control the strategic waterway until the United States returns to its commitments, according to IRNA.

Gharibabadi made the remarks at a press conference in Bandar Abbas, the capital of Hormuzgan Province in southern Iran, on Sunday evening.

“The Strait of Hormuz is part of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s national security, and Iran reserves the right to take the necessary measures to protect its national security,” he said, rejecting criticism of Iran’s control of the strategic waterway.

— IRNA News Agency ☫ (@IrnaEnglish) October 12, 2026

“These control measures will remain in place until the United States, as the main aggressor, concludes that military action is not the solution and returns to its commitments,” Gharibabadi said, adding that Iran’s declared arrangements were being enforced in the strait.

Under these arrangements, warships are barred from passing through, while commercial vessels may transit after completing the required coordination, he added.

“At present, no vessel can pass through the strait without coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Vessels that attempt to do so without Iran’s coordination will violate the arrangements announced by Iran and face punitive measures by our Armed Forces,” he stressed.

The deputy foreign minister also referred to an understanding reached between Iran and Oman on the passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

“The United States’ return to its commitments is an essential and integral part of the process, and any subsequent action by the Islamic Republic of Iran will be contingent on it,” he said.

Gharibabadi added Iran had always sought good and constructive relations with all its neighbours.

He reiterated Iran’s position that security in the Persian Gulf region can only be ensured by the countries of the region, not by foreign forces.

“During the 40-day war, everyone saw that the presence of foreign forces, particularly the United States, was the main source of insecurity not only for the region but also for countries hosting US military bases and equipment. This is a lesson that must be learned from these recent developments and acts of military aggression,” he said.

Military approach in Yemen will make region’s situation more complicated: Araghchi

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stressed that insistence on a military approach and ignoring a political solution will make the ongoing regional situation more complex, according to IRNA.

— IRNA News Agency ☫ (@IrnaEnglish) October 12, 2026

Speaking in a telephone call with his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan late on Sunday, Araghchi expressed concern over the escalation of tensions.

He said that persisting with a military approach while neglecting a political solution will only exacerbate the current situation.

The existing crises in the region have no military solution, he reiterated.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy says oil tanker struck mine in Strait of Hormuz

An oil tanker struck a mine while attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz, triggering an explosion in its engine room, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said Sunday.

The IRGC Navy said in a statement that the supertanker, capable of carrying around 2 million barrels of oil, was attempting to transit the strategic waterway with its navigation system switched off.

The IRGC Navy: A shuttle tanker (the third oil tanker) laden with 750,000 barrels of crude oil tried to transit through a prohibited route, disregarding the IRGC's repeated warnings. As a result, the vessel struck a sea mine, triggering an explosion and a fierce fire. pic.twitter.com/GZYDkHEIBI
— IRNA News Agency ☫ (@IrnaEnglish) October 12, 2026

The oil tanker is the third vessel to strike naval mines along the prohibited route in the Strait of Hormuz since Saturday, it added.

The statement did not identify the vessel or specify its nationality or flag.

The IRGC Navy renewed its warning that vessels switching off their navigation systems while passing through the waterway would be classified as “hostile vessels.”

The announcement came after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in late August that international shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz had been reopened following the removal of Iranian naval mines by US forces.

Read: Iran says US response to its proposal to reopen Hormuz was 'insufficient'

Iran announced on July 12 that it had again closed the strait following the resumption of US attacks on July 8.

Tehran has threatened to target vessels using routes other than those designated by Iranian authorities or attempting to cross the waterway without permission.

The US and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington later imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

The US and Iran subsequently signed a memorandum of understanding in June concerning freedom of navigation in the strait, but implementation stalled over disagreements related to security in the strategic waterway.

Iran accuses CENTCOM chief of running oil smuggling operations in Strait of Hormuz

A senior Iranian security official accused the head of the US Central Command (CENTCOM) of orchestrating oil-smuggling operations in the Strait of Hormuz with the assistance of the United Arab Emirates military.

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, made the claim in an interview over the weekend with Iranian state-run Press TV.

Rezaei said Admiral Brad Cooper was directing the operations using the UAE military, with five or six small boats transferring oil to large tankers.

He said Iranian forces had been striking five or six vessels involved in the operations each night over the past two or three months.

Read more: Saudi-led coalition says new attack at Riyadh airport causes fire, day after strike kills 13

There was no immediate comment from the US or the UAE on Rezaei’s claims.

Rezaei also rejected US President Donald Trump’s assertion that the Strait of Hormuz was open, insisting that Iran remained in control of the strategic waterway.

“From now on, therefore, we will maintain control over the management of the Strait of Hormuz. It will remain under our management to ensure peace and security in the region. We will not back down on this issue,” he said.

He said maritime traffic through the strait remained far below prewar levels and accused Washington and its regional allies of using smuggling networks to move oil through the waterway.

Rezaei also warned that Iran could target US-linked technology infrastructure in the region if the United States attacks the country again.

“We have not yet included these assets among our targets. But if war breaks out, many of these cables, data centres, artificial intelligence facilities and numerous other sites will be destroyed,” he said.

He put the value of such infrastructure at more than $2 trillion.

The Iranian official said Tehran was also prepared to deploy additional military capabilities in the event of renewed hostilities.

“Today, we are fully prepared to introduce new capabilities if the war starts again,” he said.

Saudi, Iranian foreign ministers discuss regional escalation

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister discussed the latest regional escalation and efforts to address it with his Iranian counterpart on Sunday, according to a Saudi Foreign Ministry statement.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held the discussions during a phone call initiated by Araghchi, the ministry said in a statement posted on US social media company X.

As authorities prepare their first campaign to vaccinate girls aged 9 to 14 against cervical cancer, quiet concerns ov

As Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) prepares to launch its first province-wide vaccination campaign against cervical cancer, health authorities face a challenge that goes beyond arranging doses and vaccination teams - convincing parents to have their daughters vaccinated.

Cervical cancer is primarily caused by persistent infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus transmitted through sexual contact. Globally, the disease claims more than 350,000 lives annually, while in Pakistan, more than 5,000 new cases and over 3,000 deaths are estimated each year, making vaccination and early detection crucial.

A year after its launch in Punjab and Sindh, the HPV vaccination campaign is now set to reach K-P, where the Health Department plans to vaccinate around 2.9 million girls aged nine to 14 - including 1.6 million school-going and 1.3 million out-of-school girls - between November 2 and November 14.

However, health officials and experts acknowledge that reaching every eligible girl will require more than vaccination teams and vaccine doses. Winning the confidence of parents and communities, addressing misinformation and overcoming vaccine hesitancy will be critical to the success of the campaign.

This is particularly pertinent in K-P where vaccine hesitancy has assumed an endemic status among the local population given the controversial history of the polio campaign and its links to CIA missions. Even today, K-P continues to record a significant number of refusals during polio campaigns, while vaccination workers have also faced security threats in several areas.

Despite these concerns, not all parents are hesitant about the campaign. While some remain wary of the vaccine's safety and possible reactions, others, particularly those who have witnessed the devastating effects of cervical cancer, see vaccination as an important safeguard for their daughters.

Bashir Khan, who lost his wife to cervical cancer, said he intended to have both his daughters vaccinated. "Losing my wife has made me particularly conscious of the importance of prevention. Parents should understand the importance of protecting their children from a disease that can have devastating consequences," urged Khan.

Conversely, Shamaila Bibi, another parent, was concerned about whether vaccination teams would be properly trained and whether the vaccine could cause reactions among girls. "The problem here is that people often become suspicious even about something positive. If, God forbid, something happens to a girl after vaccination, no parent would want to vaccinate their daughter," she said.

Health experts say such concerns need to be addressed through direct communication rather than allowing rumours to fill the information gap. Dr Bawar Shah, president of the Pakistan Paediatric Association's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chapter, told The Express Tribune that the HPV vaccine was safe and had been administered in countries around the world.

"Cervical cancer is increasing rapidly in Pakistan and vaccination offers an important means of preventing the disease. If parents have any questions or concerns, they should discuss them with the Health Department's vaccination teams and seek clarification," said Dr Shah.

Asad Zia, Assistant Director of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) and in-charge of the Social and Behavior Change (SBC) Cell at the Directorate General Health Services (DGHS) K-P, said awareness campaigns were being conducted in schools, mosques and communities to educate parents about cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine.

Zia claimed health teams were also visiting areas where people had concerns about the campaign. In a recent visit to remote Kurram district, officials met religious scholars, community leaders and residents to address their questions and misconceptions about the vaccine.

When combining the entrenched public mistrust around vaccines with the tabooed nature of female reproductive issues, it is not hard to imagine that convincing families to vaccinate their teenage daughters will spark varying levels of backlash among locals.

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti has announced that recent administrative reforms and improved governance in Balochistan are yielding tangible results, particularly in the crucial education and health sectors.

The Chief Minister revealed that complaints regarding teachers failing to attend schools and doctors being absent from hospitals have plummeted to less than one per cent over the past three months. He described the sharp decline as clear evidence that the provincial government's robust monitoring system and proactive governance approach are delivering on the ground.

"For years, absenteeism was one of the most persistent and frustrating challenges in our public service delivery, repeatedly highlighted by citizens during open courts," Bugti said. "However, through strict supervision, coordinated planning, and timely action, we have now brought this issue largely under control, resulting in significantly improved attendance in schools and hospitals."

The Chief Minister noted that over the past nine months, open courts held across all districts of Balochistan recorded thousands of public complaints, the majority of which concerned inactive institutions and missing staff.

 From Bhutto's 1975 crackdown to Musharraf's 1999 takeover

Governor's rule has been imposed in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa for the fourth time in the province's history, transferring executive powers from the provincial government to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, while an emergency has simultaneously been declared in 12 districts under Article 232 of the Constitution.

The latest development marks the suspension of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government led by Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi. Under the new arrangement, Governor Kundi will administer the province with the assistance of an interim cabinet.

The province has experienced three previous periods of Governor's rule, each arising from a different political and constitutional crisis.

The first instance occurred in 1975 under the federal government of then-prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. The measure followed the assassination of Hayat Muhammad Khan Sherpao in a bomb blast while he was addressing a gathering at the Department of History at the University of Peshawar. The federal government subsequently banned the National Awami Party (NAP), made arrests and placed the province under Governor's rule.

The second episode came in 1994, when the federal government led by Benazir Bhutto moved against the provincial administration of Muslim League chief minister Pir Sabir Shah. Amid a political confrontation, assembly members reportedly disappeared and a no-confidence motion was brought against Shah. Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao subsequently formed the provincial government.

The third period followed the military takeover by then-army chief General Pervez Musharraf in October 1999, which removed the government of prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Muslim League Governor Mian Gul Aurangzeb was replaced by Lieutenant General (retired) Muhammad Shafiq. He was later succeeded by Lieutenant General (retired) Syed Iftikhar Hussain, who administered the province with his own cabinet until the formation of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) government in late 2002.

The latest arrangement differs from the previous episodes because the imposition of Governor's rule has coincided with an emergency covering 12 districts, reflecting the security-related scope of the current measures.

The affected areas include the eight merged tribal districts: Khyber, Mohmand, Kurram, Orakzai, Bajaur, North Waziristan, South Waziristan Upper and South Waziristan Lower. The four other districts are Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu and Lakki Marwat.

The emergency covers the Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan divisions in their entirety and parts of the Peshawar, Kohat and Malakand divisions. The Hazara and Mardan divisions have been exempted from the emergency measures.

Meanwhile, disruption of internet services has caused widespread confusion across the province, complicating communication and access to information amid the political and administrative changes.

Says Mines and Minerals Act passed without opp's knowing, effectively hands Balochistan's natural resources to federal

Senior politician and former senator Nawabzada Haji Lashkari Raisani on Sunday demanded that the recommendations submitted by opposition parties on the Mines and Minerals Act be made public, noting that the notification for the committee formed on the Act has still not been issued, leaving him outside the process.

Speaking at a press conference at the Quetta Press Club, where Barrister Muhammad Iqbal Kakar and a large number of workers and supporters were present, Raisani said it was the responsibility of political leaders to convey their viewpoint to the public amid Balochistan's ongoing crisis.

He alleged that political restrictions are being imposed in the province and that fake representatives are being installed with the aim of facilitating the plunder of Balochistan's resources.

Raisani claimed the Mines and Minerals Act was passed without the opposition's knowledge and that it effectively handed Balochistan's natural resources over to the federation. He said that after the Act's approval, reports surfaced of assembly members being allocated funds running into crores of rupees through the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

Belongings, skills and memories travel to every temporary shelter

Across the plains of South Punjab, families known as Pakhiwas live in small tents on vacant pieces of land.

They stay in one place for some time before moving elsewhere, carrying their belongings, traditional skills and memories of the places they have visited. For them, life is a journey and a temporary shelter is home.

The word Pakhi means bird in the local language. Like birds that wander from place to place, these families travel in search of work and shelter, with the open sky as their constant companion.

Their way of life differs from that of settled communities, yet they have preserved their traditions, ancestral occupations and cultural identity across generations.

For Pakhiwas families, home is not always a house with walls and a roof.

Sometimes, it is a tent beneath a tree, a patch of open ground or a shelter built from whatever material is available. Their lives remain closely linked to nature, changing seasons and the daily struggle to earn a living.

Saleem Pakhiwas says he has spent his entire life living this way.

"Since I opened my eyes, I have seen our families moving from one place to another and putting up tents wherever we find a suitable place," he says.

Saleem makes different kinds of baskets to earn a living. His work requires patience and skill, and his products serve practical purposes in everyday life.

As factory-made goods become increasingly common, his craft represents a traditional livelihood that continues to survive in the region.

Other community members pursue different occupations.

Some collect wastepaper and scrap to support their families. Their work also helps recover materials for reuse and recycling, although their contribution often goes unnoticed.

Akram Pakhiwas, who has spent much of his life in different parts of Multan, earns money by collecting mango stones.

He gathers them and sells them to farmers and nursery owners who use them to grow mango plants. South Punjab is famous for its mango orchards, and Akram has connected his livelihood with the region's agricultural economy. What many people discard after eating a mango becomes a source of income for him and a useful resource for nursery growers.

His work demonstrates how people with limited resources find opportunities in things others leave

behind.

Life in a tent may seem difficult to those accustomed to permanent homes, but Pakhiwas families have learned to adapt.

Akram acknowledges that they lack many facilities available to settled households, yet years of experience have taught them to manage everyday challenges.

Summer heat in Multan can be particularly harsh for people living in temporary shelters.

Akram says families use small solar panels to meet some basic electricity needs, making daily life more manageable.

Winter brings different challenges. Families cover their shelters carefully to protect themselves from cold winds, using material and methods learned over generations. Although their homes are simple, experience helps them adapt to changing weather.

Healthcare remains a concern. Akram says families generally obtain medicines from local hakims.
