Sparked by the planned evictions of several Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan on Sunday expressed “serious concerns” to his Israeli counterpart about violent clashes in Jerusalem sparked by planned evictions of Palestinians from East Jerusalem, the White House said in a statement.

Sullivan in a phone call with Israeli National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat "encouraged the Israeli government to pursue appropriate measures to ensure calm during Jerusalem Day commemorations."

New confrontations broke out between Palestinians and Israeli police in parts of East Jerusalem on Sunday, including in Sheikh Jarrah and outside the walled Old City, as well as in Haifa, a mixed Arab-Jewish city in northern Israel at the height of the Muslim holy month of Ramazan.

The clashes have been sparked by the planned evictions of several Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem, an area captured by Israel in a 1967 war.

Israel's attorney-general secured a deferment on Sunday of an Israeli Supreme Court hearing on the evictions, a session that had threatened to stoke more violence in the holy city and heighten international concern.

"Mr. Sullivan also reiterated the United States’ serious concerns about the potential evictions of Palestinian families from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood," the White House statement said.

Sullivan and Ben-Shabbat "agreed that the launching of rocket attacks and incendiary balloons from Gaza towards Israel is unacceptable and must be condemned," the White House added.

It said Sullivan also expressed the Biden administration's commitment to Israel's security and to supporting peace and stability throughout the Middle East and would remain fully engaged in the days ahead to promote calm in Jerusalem.

Both have since unfollowed each other on Twitter

It appears that actor Armeena Khan has a bone to pick with Shaniera Akram. In a series of tweets some of which that have now been deleted, Armeena lashed out at the social activist over an old spat between the two.

The Janaan actor initially called out Shaniera for blocking her instead of taking down a particular tweet.

"Wow, unfollows me quietly, could dish it out to me but couldn't take it back. I knew she was going to do it. Lady, you're just another woman with a white saviour complex. I asked her to take the tweet down nicely and she didn't when I deleted mine," Armeena said.

Moving on, Armeena retweeted an old post about mental health awareness by Shaniera, accusing the latter of not walking the talk.

" Did you care about mine when you could see that I was being dogpiled on by your followers and I kept asking you to take it down? You didn’t and you allowed me to receive abuse," Armeena said.

https://twitter.com/ArmeenaRK/status/1276067692626292737

While the Sherdil actor didn't explicitly mention the tweet in question, she did hint that it had something to do with Shaniera making light of the former's fear of Geckos some months back.

"Imagine someone gaslighting you over your phobias and telling you how to feel. Like, go away why don’t you? And then an ego the size of a building. Loser!" Armeen had posted after unfollowing Shaniera.

https://twitter.com/ArmeenaRK/status/1276071093720231936

At the time Armeena had posted about her fear of geckos. Shaniera threw shade at her by ridiculing the phobia in general.

https://twitter.com/iamShaniera/status/1249585240970080263

Furthermore, Armeena talked about how the majority of the public might not support her in this conflict.

https://twitter.com/ArmeenaRK/status/1276078100615434240

"Lol, in Pakistan? Dude, I’m brown and you know what the public is like. So, feel free to choose sides. I don’t mind. I know how this ends anyway," she said.

The actor recently talked about her life in a QnA session

Saba Qamar held a question and answers session on Twitter earlier this week. The Lahore Se Aagey actor answered various questions about her likes and dislikes, career plans and so forth under the hashtag AskSaba.

During the session, she was asked about a memorable moment on set, if any that touched her heart. To this, Qamar responded with an anecdote of a shoot of hers in Lahore that instilled empathy in her.

"Yes, I did one project near to Lahore area where we shot the whole day and there was a beautiful lady in a room made of mud with no fan and electricity and at that time I realised how blessed we are so we should be always thankful to Allah for all the blessings that he has given us," she said.

When it comes to award shows, the actor talked about how the only validation that mattered to her was of her fans. A fan had asked Qamar, her thought on not getting an award for her performance in Cheekh. "Ap logon k hotay hoay award ki kya zarorat hai (With all of you present, there is no need of awards)," she answered.

As far as her career plans are concerned, Qamar talked about both her pending film projects and possible venture into the digital space. "Yes I just finished my film Kamli and now I’ll be shooting my next upcoming film Ghabrana Nahi hai and then there is a web series coming up on ZEE5, but no drama as yet," she said

According to Qamar, her upcoming TV serial Mann Jogi would air on television in a month or two.

One fan asked her about a possible return to Bollywood. Qamar simply replied with "#AskBollywood". Back in 2017, Qamar had starred opposite Irrfan Khan in Bollywood comedy-drama Hindi Medium. The film was directed by Saket Chaudhary.

Qamar recently posted a snippet of a film’s script on her Instagram story. This led to several speculations as to what the actor’s next venture could be.

Additionally, the star also announced that she will be starting her YouTube channel on her birthday.

Among other things, Qamar also wished newlyweds, Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir when a fan asked her what she thought about them. "They’re made for each other, lots of prayers and love for them," Qamar said. Speaking of her fellow actors, Qamar noted that she would love to work with Sanam Saeed in the future. "Yes I would love to, she is an amazing actress," she said.

On the lighter side, the Baghi star talked about how she keeps her self calm and collected. When a fan asked her on how she combats depression, the actor had a very simple response. "I always stay positive, read books, workout and eat healthy so there is no space for depression," she said. She listed The Road to Success as her favourite book. Among other things, Qamar noted that one of her favourite things to do is to show up in public without make-up.

District administration of Rahimyar Khan to complete identifying the deceased soon, says Mirpurkhas DC

Although almost three weeks have passed since the Liaquatpur incident, nine persons from Mirpurkhas district who boarded the Tezgam Express to attend a religious congregation in Raiwand remain missing. A delegation of the families of the missing persons led by local ulema met Mirpurkhas Deputy Commissioner Zahid Memon on Monday to seek the government's help to trace the persons or locate their bodies. Memon said that he had contacted the district administration of Rahimyar Khan, Punjab, again and they had assured him that the identification of the bodies in their hospitals would be completed soon. The missing men include Aijaz Memon, Muhammad Iqbal, Jan Muhammad Solangi, Aurangzeb Khurram, Faseeur Rehman, Javed Adil and others. The DC assured the families that they are trying to trace the missing and if they are among the dead, their bodies will be brought back at the earliest. According to

him, the DNA test to identify Faseeur Rehman's body has not been done because his family is out of the country. The families that met the DC told the local media that they have provided their DNA samples for identification but the process is being delayed for unknown reasons. Official sources from the DC's office told The Express Tribune that the process of compensation has also not begun as yet.

Meanwhile, sources in the Pakistan Railways have informed that they have received claims of about 14 missing passengers from all of Sindh. The Tezgam Express caught fire on Oct 31 and the raging blaze burnt three bogies of the train, killing 73 passengers. A majority of them belonged to Mirpurkhas and Umerkot districts. As many as 13 victims of the incident were laid to rest in Mirpurkhas and Umerkot districts on November 1 and 24 more were laid to rest on November 7.

Recent influx of political leaders was cited as a reason for the change in party policy

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced a change in party policy and all new entrants will now be screened by a committee before official induction into party ranks, reported Express News on Thursday.

The committee will gather information on all interested political leaders before they are accepted as members of PTI. In addition to the constitution of the new committee, Chairman Imran Khan will also not meet all new members, as the policy will put a halt to the practice. The recent influx of political leaders was cited as a reason for the change in party policy.

Senate ‘vote-selling': Five PTI lawmakers serve legal notices to Imran Khan

On May 21, five PTI lawmakers, who were expelled by party chief Imran Khan, served legal notices to the latter, demanding to withdraw allegations of selling votes in Senate elections.

The lawmakers also demanded a public apology in 14 days and Rs5 billion in compensation for ‘baseless allegations’ levelled against them.

The disgruntled lawmakers said they have taken this decision after consultation and if the party chairman failed to respond, then they would move the court under the defamation ordinance of 2002.

Vote-selling charge: Eight PTI lawmakers shown the door

On April 18, the PTI chief had announced initiating disciplinary proceedings against 20 lawmakers in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, who allegedly ditched the party during Senate polls.

Managing Editor Aijazul Haque says favoured newspapers have dozens of votes

Express Managing Editor Aijazul Haque has resigned from the newly-elected Executive Committee of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), days after being elected to the position in protest over the unfair electoral lists that were formed on non-equality.

He said that a group of two newspaper houses have been occupying APNS for the last two decades using unfair and inappropriate lists.

We will ensure free and fair elections: CJP Nisar

“Hundreds of new newspapers and magazines have been published and become prominent in the newspaper industry during the last 10 years but were deprived of their right of permanent membership unconstitutionally,” said Haque.

He also stated that tens of millions of rupees were spent, external pressure was exerted and exploitative tactics like threats were used during the recent election because a certain group feared its defeat despite the forged electoral lists.

The newly-elected executive committee member argued that although he had been elected despite the conspiracies, many prominent newspaper personalities remained unelected because of the counterfeit lists.

Challenges for print media: APNS holds advertising roundtable

Well-known persons like Zia Shahid (Roznama Khabrayn), Arif Nizami (Daily Pakistan Today), Rafiq Afghan (Roznama Ummat), Anwar Sajidi (Roznama Intikhab), Dr Jabbar Khattak (Roznama Awami Aawaz), Kazim Khan (Daily Times), Hamid Hussain Abidi (Roznama Amn), Ghulam Nabi Chandio (Roznama Pak), Arif Siddique Baloch (Roznama Balochistan Express), Tahir Farooq (Roznama Jihad), Muhammad Haider Amin (Balochistan Times), Faqir Minthar Mangrio (Roznama Mehran, Hyderabad), Tanveer Shaukat (Roznama Ghareeb, Faisalabad), Zubair Mehmood (Roznama Soorat-e-Haal), Waqas Tariq Farooq (Roznama Jahan Numa), Nasheed Raee (Roznama Qaumi Awaz, Multan), Mumtaz Ahmed Sadiq (Roznama Aazadi) and Shamud Duha (Roznama Al-Falah) fought the election but could not succeed for a few votes. Thus they were deprived of the right of equal representation in the APNS.

Subsequently, a few newspaper groups have right of more than one vote according to their editions; like Jang group with 12 votes, followed by Nawa-e-Waqat group with six votes while publications like Dawn group, Kawish, group and Awam Quetta group each possess three votes. All of these newspapers have more than one vote despite each one of them being a single paper.

Probe ordered into proposed ‘law to control print media’

On the other hand, the most authentic newspaper of Pakistan’s newspaper industry like Express has 1 vote which should actually be 17. Similarly other publication groups such as Khabrayn has only six votes instead of a fair 12 votes. Pakistan Today also has a single vote instead of three. Daily Times group is also given only one vote and deprived of its deserving six votes. The list also includes Jihad, Awami Awaz and Ummat all of which have one vote each instead of five and four respectively.

Additionally, many newspapers which are published from many cities have the right of one vote only. Amid this situation, many favoured newspapers have more than a dozen votes each while many uncountable newspapers of similar status do not have the right of similar membership.

Interestingly, everyone knows the efforts of this specific group for many years to save the skin of a specific advertising agency which is being investigated by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Chalking out strategies : APNS council meeting to be held on March 30

Aijazul Haque said if hundreds of other eligible newspapers were not deprived of their membership unconstitutionally, his colleagues would have been elected with heavy mandate, liberating the APNS from this occupying group and participating in solving the economic crisis facing the newspaper industry.

He also announced that he and his colleagues would launch a struggle against the formation of a fake electoral institution in the APNS so that an effective strategy could be devised to resolve issues of the newspaper industry.

Ticket booking facility was available in different places of Hazara division

A number of local people Friday urged the government to restore the railway booking service for various trains from Hazara division. Pakistan Railways suspended its booking service for Tez Gam, Blue Express, Khyber Mail, Shalimar and Quetta Express all over Hazara division. Owing to lack of booking offices, passengers from Hazara division had to go to Rawalpindi for purchasing tickets. Earlier, ticket booking facility was available in different places of Hazara division. People in the region division have demanded that Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique reopen the Railway Booking Office in the area. They also urged National Assembly Deputy Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi – an Abbottabad native – to help revive the facility.
