Has the government’s Covid-19 strategy failed?
The number of Covid-19 patients in Pakistan has now crossed the 250,000 mark. For any country, such a big number should be a point of concern as it means that Covid-19 is still spreading at an alarming rate, and due to insufficient measures taken by the authorities the peak of the virus has still not hit the country according to some experts. The provincial government of Sindh, led by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, has put up a good fight against the virus but there is a big question mark over the performance of the other provincial governments and the federal government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The casual approach with regards to handling of the pandemic and the PTI government’s inability to convince the masses about the seriousness of the situation has not only resulted in the high numbers of infections but has also hurt the middle and lower middle class economically. Anyone with a little knowledge of the pandemic could have understood the risks associated with it and would have gone for a complete lockdown while increasing the testing capacity. However, this did not happen, and the country must the pay the price for PTI’s negligence.
Doctors across the board were telling the government to take this pandemic seriously but they were routinely dismissed as agents of political opponents. Now what we are watching is only a glimpse of the gloomy days which lie ahead. Instead of tackling this problem by forming a united front, the PTI government is busy engaging in a war of words with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N). From day one the PTI government was of the view that the lockdown will hurt the labourers and the lower middle class, prompting Imran Khan to decide against the lockdown. However, the half-hearted approach of going for a lockdown to just show the world that the government was serious, and not increasing testing drastically, not only resulted in a rise in Covid-19 patients but it also impacted the economy and the lower middle class. A recent survey of Gallup Pakistan has just revealed that 2.1 million families in Pakistan sold their household items to incur the monthly expense of their kitchen.
This actually raises the question as to what the so-called smart lockdown actually achieved and why, in spite of government claims that it helped deserving people through the Ehsas emergency programme, such staggering numbers of people were forced to sell their their possessions in order to cover basic household needs. Additionally, why were congregational prayers allowed to take place despite doctors advising against it? Currently, the smart lockdown is a sort of failure since SOPs given by the government are not being followed by many frequenting public places.
The quarantine facilities established early on were extraordinarily ineffective, and the mismanagement has now resulted in many people hiding their illness or choosing not to get tested for Covid-19. Naturally, the pharmaceutical mafia is profiteering off of this as medicinal supplements that can help boost the immune system are being sold at black market prices whereas antibiotics like Azithromycin have almost disappeared from the markets these days.
It has been a tale of mismanagement and leaving people to their own fate as far as the ruling party is concerned. The herd immunity model, which was even advocated earlier on by many journalists like us, has proven to be a failure as Sweden has paid the price for opting for that route, both in terms of lives lost and the econoomic ramifications. Living in denial, Imran Khan and his provincial chief ministers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Punjab have started saying that Covid-19 cases are falling in the country, whereas the truth is that government has reduced the testing of Covid-19 patients. The testing capacity, according to a recent news report, has now dropped by 56% in the country.
It is a chaotic situation and many medical doctors who talked to this correspondent are of the view that the botched handling of the pandemic will result in a human catastrophe in Pakistan. Imran Khan has neither saved the vulnerable and poor segment of society from the economic impacts of the pandemic, nor has his governemnt curbed the spread of Covid-19 by opting for a lockdown and massive testing and identification of suspected carriers. The only way forward for the PTI government right now is to take this pandemic seriously and to bring the entire political leadership on one table to form a national action plan on an emergency basis to defeat the first wave of the pandemic. It is never too late to save human lives and the economy.
Whether Imran Khan will ditch his current approach and admit to having underestimated the pandemic, and how the PTI cabinet and provincial governments will implement the SOPs strictly to stop the further spread of the virus, remains to be seen. For now, the masses are on their own and it is not the government but peoples’ luck that will decide their fate.

Pakistan continues to show improvement in the recovery of COVID 19 patients. In one week’s time the active cases have fallen from 89,708 to 53, 393 and improvement by 36, 315 cases. The government's database on coronavirus shows that 1,653 more people have recovered from Covid-19 in the country. The total number of recoveries has risen to 205,929 while 1,522 patients are in critical condition. This scribe is either not keeping track of the situation or has the negativity of the opposition for the sake of opposition. Anyways promoting negativity is also also a source of earnings. The strategy of Government of Pakistan which appeared dangerous has proved to be a success. The risk was worth the cost.
Those are fudged up numbers coming from the stable of 35-pancture claimant. The man and his gang are taking Pakistani awaam for a ride. Believe them at your own peril.
The government failed and is failing on every front. Why were Sops not imposed when they have lifted the lockdown? they should atleast be done in big bazzars all over Pakistan. the fine in large number should have been imposed on who ever going to bazaar without mask. the bazaars should have been shutdown multiple times till they mend their ways. Their ministers are rightly said facebook cabinet.
All the data coming out of Pakistan appears false.
According to Prof Steve Hanke of John Hopkins University, Indian figures are a case of 'rotten apples' and even Indian researchers admit, the unofficial cases are far far more than what is being reported
So you are a supporter of complete lockdown, maybe you were able to earn from home, by typing words which are stupendous, tell me how the daily wage earner, who earns 500, 600 rupees would have survived such a long lockdown, would have you sent them a bag of flour? Tell me, during the initial lockdown, how much did you earn or have, and what percentage did you gave to the poor daily wager who didnt had anything to earn and no savings? Come out to the grassroots and then talk big, not every one is as lucky as you, complete lockdown was and is completely out of the question in a poor and corrupt country like pakistan, for whatever reason, we are not hit as hard as the likes of uk and italy, maybe we have a young population, but we are good
The writer is 4 weeks late in blasting the govt needlessly. He flies through neatly after praising CM Murad for God knows what Good fight he put. 200 million population has 0.25 million cases so far,, its certainly very good. And our deaths are already declining for last 3 weeks and its just great. THANKS pti govt.....
The blog is wrongly depicting the actual situation of epidemic in Pakistan. The curve has really flattened due to significant reduction in number of new cases. Sindh govt response being graded as good is not supported by actual data. Smart lock down is real answer because you can not lockdown country indefinately.
If blog was written few weeks ago it would have perhaps dipicted true picture of govt handling the epidemic in Pakistan. But at present the epidemic has definitely lost its mometum. the number of new cases have remarkably reduced in number. One may think the reason behind drop in number of cases may be due to patients avoiding testing/hosptilization. But most of beds in hospitals of Punjab are lying vacant. There was a time when people were going from one hospital to other due to non availability of beds. Now there has been remarkable drop in number of cases. Being a doctor to know real situation I asked from GP's and hospital consultants, all are confirming that number of patients has treally declined. you have appreciated govt of sindh response to Corona but actual figures do not support it. Firstly number of cases in sindh are higher than punjab whereas population is more than double of Sindh. You can creat impression by daily holding of press conference, CM is very effecient but unfortunatley data is not supporting the view point. Locking down whole country just at the begining of epidemic in country was wrong which adversely affected economy. Why should lockdown a town where there is no case. The strategy of smart lock down is the proper way. It means lockdown the areas where corona is spreading, trace contacts and do tests. I think failure of PTI to handle Corona epidemic is exageration and against the facts. Finally it is worth mentioning that one should no expect China like response from 3rd world countries with poor resources and lack of infrastructure. While our govt lack resources for routine health facilities what to expect deal with such epidemics which come once or twice in centuries.
Looks the article is about 30-days late!!! Has Mr Imad bothered to check the latest numbers & trends? https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/pakistan/ Looking at Daily New Cases, Pakistan is doing well in all 3 parameters, number of cases and 3 & 7 days moving averages. I expected a bit better from Mr Imad, hopefully he will publish an update of his article in coming days to reflect reality. Regards
Typical shallow useless article by none other than Imad Zafar. This guy needs to grow up and come out of his anti-Imran shell. Just by reading the topic and first line, the articles reeks of misinformation. Need to raise the standard of journalism in this country or we will have a phony like Imad writing articles.
Just by the mere subject of the article I knew that the author was going to be Imad Zafar.
Non sense, do you not see the stats? Some people just cant accept reality. Imran Khan should be praised at least for this, Journalism like this tarnishes the entire fraternity.
This journalist has written an essay for the purpose of filling the space. The headline is to catch attention, which is entirely devoid of substance. Govt strategy seems to be working. The cases are dropping, and death rate is declining and Smart lockdowns has worked. Todays headline in tribune says the same. Yesterday pakistan registered lowest death toll since it began. This journalist should have just read the headlines of its own newspaper. he speaks of a doctor without naming him in genera way. I dont know why common sense journalism is so scarce in pakistan.
An informative article.
Miss statement of facts and written with prejudice.
The writer of the article is completely miss stating facts; Sindh govt 's performance is much poor than other provinces as Sindh has more Covid-19 case than Punjab with only half the population. In Pakistan patients per million are slightly less than Bangladesh and new infected cases and deaths in Pakistan are reducing since start of July. Numbers clearly reflect it. In whole article he has neither qouted any data nore indicated sources of his information to form his opinion. Intellectually unethical.
