Oh. My. God! Could it be more fake?: 15 reasons why we wish the new ‘Friends’ trailer was the real deal!

The fake trailer made us nostalgic and wish it was real. After all, who doesn't want to see Joey being...

Blogs Desk January 26, 2018
Everyone’s seen Friends, and if you haven’t, what have you even been doing with your life? It’s only been 14 years since the most popular sitcom in the world ended.

There are some TV shows that we connect with to the degree that they end up creating a special place in your life, and Friends was that show for us. We were pulled into the world of Apartment 20 (though we don’t quite see how they afforded it), and we got to know each member so well that we, too, felt like we belonged in that group. And then after 10 seasons of laughter (even though we’re millenials and we binged the entire show), we had to say goodbye, and it was hard. The tears started when the last episode began and didn’t quite stop long after Phoebe kept her key on the counter of the purple apartment that we all loved and they all went to go get coffee one last time. We knew it was over, and we knew we were going to miss it terribly.

Over the years, all anyone has wanted is a Friends reunion, and anytime any of the friends reunites in any capacity, the world collectively loses its chill. Unsurprisingly, then, when we recently came across a trailer for an upcoming Friends movie, we could not control our excitement. After all, the cast had repeatedly assured us that a reunion was off the table, so it all felt too good to be true to begin with. But as we are suckers for this group of six, this was a very big deal for us.

However, spoiler alert, the trailer turned out to be fake. It combined clips from different shows that the cast of Friends had been a part of over the years to make it seem like they are all coming back together. It was pretty obvious that it was fake, and while this bummed us out, it also made us nostalgic for our favourite group, and made us desperately wish it was real.

These are 15 things, off the top of our head, that we miss about Friends and would want to see in a movie:

1. Could we miss Chandler any more?

Chandler, everyone’s favourite friend, is undoubtedly the best part of the entire show; you can fight us on this! The saddest part about the fake trailer was definitely that we weren’t going to see the Chan-Chan man anytime soon.

2. All the goofing off

Every single time they acted crazy and made us laugh uncontrollably; who remembers the one with the embryos, when they have a quiz-off for the apartment? Speaking of which, we still don't know what Chandler’s job is...

On a side note, we’re pretty sure that if they just put these six celebrities in the room, we’d watch it like a Friends episode.

3. Everything about Joey and Chandler’s friendship

This bromance was most definitely our favourite offering on the show. On a show quite literally about friends, these two gave us, what can be colloquially described as, “friendship goals”! What do we need to do to get Mathew Perry and Matt LeBlanc together as Chan and Joe again?

4. Chandler and Monica

God, how we miss these two! Even though Friends was better in its earlier seasons, there will always be a special place in our heart for the era that started after the season 4 finale, when these two finally got together. The fake trailer makes it seem as if Chandler and Monica aren’t together anymore, and while that sucks, we were still intrigued, if we’re being honest.

5. Phoebe and Mike being weird together

Where was Mike in the trailer? What happened to him? Is he okay? We know Paul Rudd is an Avenger now, but it’d be nice to see him back as one half of the weird but lovable couple that he made with Phoebe. Princess Consuela Bananahammock and Crap Bag for the win!

6. All the times when Ross was the worst

We don’t want to say we hated Ross, so let’s just put it this way – he’s always been our least favourite friend. The episode where he has a problem with a man being the nanny pretty much made our decision for us. One of the best part of Friends was when the group was collectively making fun of Ross, also knows as the divorce force. If the Friends movie was real, we’d get to see Ross being the worst again and him being dissed by everyone, and now we feel like we’re being deprived of that privilege.

And just to make it clear, they were not on a break!

7. Joey being ‘wisdomous’

When you think of an ultimate friend, who is there for everybody and goes out of his way for his friends, we’d say it would be Joey Tribbiani. Not only is he considerate and giving (except when it’s food, but we understand that Joe!) but he has a stable relationship with each one of the friends. We miss Joey’s goofy statements, lack of self-awareness and his love for sandwiches. Come on, we deserve some Joey love!

8. An era where adults just chilled in Central Perk cafe all the time

Now that we’re adults watching Friends, it’s hard to imagine how the group could be “fully functioning” adults and sit at Central Perk all the time. But would we watch that in a movie? Of course we would.

9. The theme song! Don’t lie, you know you miss that too!
“So no one told you life was gonna be this way, *Clap* *Clap* *Clap* *Clap*”

The one theme song we didn’t have to fast forward through! All we want is to hear the theme song again in an episode of Friends that we haven’t already seen.

10. Smelly cat!

All of Phoebe’s songs, really! Not that we need a reminder of how weird Phoebe could be, but would it be nice? Yes, it would.

11. Ross and Rachel, when they weren’t on a break

Though we weren’t the biggest fans of Ross and Rachel, absence does make the heart grow fonder, and we’d want to watch a Friends movie just to see if Ross made his umpteenth marriage work (hopefully with Rachel).

Please stop, Ross.

12. Oh. My. Janice!

Where is Janice? What is she exclaiming about these days? Did she run into Chandler and Monica again? Just some pertinent questions we need a movie to answer!

13. The guest stars we never saw again

If the movie was real, maybe Ellen DeGeneres could guest star this time!

14. Good old Gunther

His only fault was loving Rachel too much. We wonder if he ever found happiness?

15. The Flashbacks!

The saddest realisation is perhaps that if the movie was real, the flashbacks would no longer be to the 80s, but to events from the actual show. As sad as that is, we’d still take it over no movie at all.

Perhaps what we miss most about the show is that how every friend felt like they were friends in real life. It did not look like they were acting, it felt real. We don’t just miss the funny element of the show, we miss the bond that the group shared.

More than two decades after the show aired originally, it still refuses to stop thoroughly entertaining us. And given how the possibility of the fake trailer having a fake movie is very, very unlikely, I guess we’ll just have to make-do by re-watching all 10 seasons for the 80th time.

Parvez | 6 years ago | Reply Enjoyed reading that ..... We along with our children grew up watching Friends ...and now my grandchildren are watching the reruns ..... and I read somewhere that even today after the show has ended years ago the main cast make some USD 22 million a year from royalties .... without doing anything. Now that's testament to popularity.
