Hundreds of dancing, flag-waving Afghan fans Friday gave a heroes' welcome to their cricket team as they arrived home after a triumphant tour of Zimbabwe.

Afghanistan sealed a historic first on Wednesday with a 2-0 Twenty20 series victory over Zimbabwe.

And last Saturday Afghanistan became the first Associate nation to defeat a Test-playing country in a one-day series with a comprehensive win over Zimbabwe.

The victories offered a rare glimmer of good news in a nation beset by decades of war and which was recently hit by a catastrophic earthquake that left 121 people dead and thousands of homes damaged.

A traditional Attan folk dance erupted at Kabul's international airport on Friday as hundreds of fans gathered to welcome the team.

"Our players performed exceptionally well, making the whole country proud," said Saeed Kamal, a 19-year-old student, sporting a headband featuring the Afghan national flag.

"We want our team to bring more laurels by beating other top sides in the world."

Afghan Cricket Board chairman Nasimullah Danish also praised the team led by skipper Asghar Stanikzai.

"This represents a momentous victory for our nation," he said.

"You have shown the world that we are no less than any other big team in the world."

Pakistan closed their innings putting up 198 runs on the board for a loss of four wickets.

Following their winning streak of a Test and three ODI's in Zimbabwe earlier this month, the touring Pakistan team will not ease up on their hosts in the two Twenty-20 matches that follow.

Zimbabwe won the toss and decided to bowl at Harare Sports Club against Pakistan in the ongoing T20 today (Friday).

Pakistan closed their innings putting up 198 runs on the board for a loss of four wickets.

The Zimbabweans went down in the final ODI against here Wednesday by 28 runs, close enough for Pakistan to want to be at or near their best. Especially as it will be the last weekend as national coach for Waqar Younis, who has other career plans and who will want a good send-off.

Pakistan have been advertising for a replacement and say they will appoint the best available wherever he comes from.

Pakistanis must begin clear favourites to win both the last matches. They have all round advantage, not least the necessary experience in this form of the game.

However, their record is poor. During the last year they have been beaten by West Indies, New Zealand, South Africa and England, giving an eclectic score of 7-0 against. They only scored 79 runs against the Windies.

Zimbabwe's last experience of a Twenty-20 series was against South Africa, when they went down 2-0. These two have not yet met in Twenty-20 cricket.

Although the record books don't support it, Zimbabwe believe they could just overturn the form book.

The home team bring in Charles Coventry, who once scored 194 not out in an ODI. And they give a debut to Zhuwayo. Pakistan are resting Younis Khan and Imran Farhat.

The teams:

Zimbabawe - Brendan Taylor (capt), Justice Chibhabha, Vusi Sibanda, Hamilton Masakadza, Tatenda Taibu (wk), Charles Coventry, Zhuwayo, Elton Chigumbura, Ray Price, Kyle Jarvis, Chris Mpofu

Pakistan - Misbah ul Haq (capt), Mohammad Hafeez, Rameez Raja, Asad Shafiq, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal (wk), Sohail Tanveer, Saeed Ajmal, Sohail Khan, Yasir Shah, Aziz Cheema

Umpires: Russell Tiffin (ZIM) Jeremiah Matibiri (ZIM)

TV Umpire: Owen Chirombe

Match referee: David Boon (AUS)

Younus, Cheema propel tourists to 28-run win in third and final ODI.

Pakistan beat Zimbabwe by 28 runs at the Harare Sports Club in the third and final One-Day International (ODI) to clinch the series 3-0.

The tourists, who managed 270 for five, survived a 110-run opening partnership between Vusi Sibanda and Chamu Chibhabha to restrict Zimbabwe to 242 for nine. Aizaz Cheema, who has been the find of the series for Pakistan, finished with four for 43 and was named man of the match. Debutant leg-spinner Yasir Shah claimed two wickets as Zimbabwe’s innings derailed after the separation of the openers.

Sibanda made 59 and Chibhabha hit 62 but Cheema and company ensured the hosts never built the momentum needed to overhaul Pakistan’s competitive total.

Batsmen set up win

However, the win was set up by the batsmen with former captain Younus Khan making 81 off just 90 deliveries, his second half-century of the series. Younus, surprisingly named the man of the series for his 159 runs in two innings, put on 97 for the third wicket with Asad Shafiq – who was playing his first match of the tour – after the openers had given the team a reasonable start.

Shafiq, who replaced Umar Akmal in the playing-eleven, responded with a knock of 51 — his fifth half-century.

However, the innings met with a disappointing finish with Pakistan failing to launch a final-overs onslaught with captain Misbahul Haq managing 29 off 28 and Adnan Akmal making 24 off 33 deliveries.

Misbah ecstatic

The Pakistan skipper was nonetheless pleased with the performance of the team after the tourists also clinched the one-off Test against Zimbabwe.

“It was good to see the new boys performing,” said Misbah as he praised the performance of Cheema and Shah. “The main idea was to give chance to the youngsters and win the series.

“We were around 25 to 30 runs short but they bowled well in the last few overs,” added the captain while hinting at a few changes for the upcoming Twenty20s.

Meanwhile, Younus admitted Zimbabwe had been a tough opposition to beat. “We had a tough series and I believe that Zimbabwe will have a good team in the future.

“Before the series, the seniors sat together and hoped to deliver and show the way for the youngsters and I’m happy we could do that.”

Cheema, 32, who made his international debut in the one-off Test earlier and has been tipped as a success story already, was happy with his performance which saw him be the leading wicket-taker of the series.

“All the hard work I’ve done in the last 10 years has borne fruit. The coach, captain and team have stood by me and I’m thankful. I just tried to hit the right lengths and it worked.”

Opening pair beats partnership record, tourists secure ODI series.

Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez made an unbeaten 139 and Imran Farhat hit 75 not out as the two managed a record-breaking opening partnership of 228 to secure a 10-wicket win against Zimbabwe in the second One-Day International (ODI) in Harare.

The win helped Pakistan secure the three-match series after the tourists also managed a five-run victory in Bulawayo.

However, this match was in stark contrast to the previous one where Pakistan were made to fight hard. After restricting Zimbabwe to 225 for six, Pakistan openers made hay of the total, beating the previous mark set by former captains Saeed Anwar and Ramiz Raja of 204 against Sri Lanka.

Hafeez, who recorded his third ODI century and was later named man of the match for the second time on this tour, scored his runs off 147 balls while Farhat’s 75 required 106 deliveries.

Winning the toss, Brendan Taylor’s team got off to a very slow start as Junaid Khan and Sohail Tanvir bowled three maidens in the first seven overs.

Vusi Sibanda scored one run off 20 balls before getting out for 14 while Zimbabwe only managed 22 runs in the first 10 overs. Masakadza, who got off to a slow start himself, ended with 68 but from 118 balls. Taylor continued his good form and made 50, his 23rd half century, while Taibu hit a bright 26. Elton Chigumbura and Prosper Utseya took 13 off TanvIr’s last over, but it always looked too little, too late.

Misbah pleased with performance

Pakistan captain Misbahul Haq was pleased with the one-sided win. “This is the way we want to play,” said Misbah. “It was a wonderful performance by the team and Hafeez is turning out to be a match-winner for us.

“Now we just want to play with a balanced team, give exposure to the youngsters but also keep on winning games.”

Hafeez, who hit a century in the one-off Test prior to the ODI series, said his hard work was finally paying off. “The hard work in the last few years is paying off for me,” said the all-rounder. “I worked a lot on my fitness and I think I really understand the game now. “The plan was simple — to spend time on the pitch and it worked wonders for us.”

Former world champions manage a tight five-run win over minnows Zimbabwe.

Pakistan survived well-composed, defiant knocks by Vusi Sibanda and captain Brendan Taylor to scrape through to a five-run win over Zimbabwe in the first One-Day International (ODI) in Bulawayo.

Set a modest target of 248, opener Sibanda scored 73 to set the pace for the hosts before Taylor almost carried them past the finish line before succumbing to debutant Aizaz Cheema.

With 12 required off the final over, Junaid Khan, hit all over the park earlier, managed to keep the Zimbabwe batsmen in check as Pakistan drew first blood in the three-match series.

Cheema impresses on ODI debut

Pakistan were indebted to Cheema, who finished with impressive figures of three for 36, and the spinners, Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal, who kept the scoring rate in check after Zimbabwe were well-placed at 174 for three in the 41st over.

Misbahul Haq was a visibly relieved man after pulling off the win that looked far from sealed at the interval.

“We were about 20 to 30 runs short,” said Misbah. “At crucial stages, we kept losing wickets and that’s why they restricted us. Ajmal is our main weapon but the pacers did a great job as well.”

Earlier, Pakistan were held to a modest score after opting to bat. After a reasonable start – despite the loss of the returning Imran Farhat for nought – the tourists simply could not get a grip on the innings and lost wickets at critical times.

Younus Khan and Hafeez took the score to 74 before the all-rounder, needing 56 to reach 2,000 ODI runs, hit a six and a four before being dismissed for 26.

He had been, to everyone’s surprise, the less aggressive partner to Younus, who sped to 78 off 72 balls with some polished stroke-play.

“I told Hafeez that we needed to bat at least another 20 overs,” said Younus. “I was lucky I got early boundaries. It was a misjudgement to get out. I told Hafeez, ‘you are playing like me and I am playing like you,’” added the former captain, whose seventh century seemed assured before he was run out by Malcolm Waller going for a sharp second run.

There on, Pakistan innings derailed with Shoaib Malik being dismissed for two in his first ODI in over a year. Misbah and Umar Akmal put on 60 for the fifth wicket but at no great pace as they consolidated while Zimbabwe held the upper hand.

Wicket-keeper Adnan missed several scoring opportunities with wild swipes, failing to accelerate towards the end with Pakistan being forced to defend a modest total.

For Zimbabwe, spinner Raymond Price, who shared the new ball with Chris Mpofu, finished with two for 39.

‘Our heads are still high’

Taylor admitted it was a tough fight but was focusing on the positives.

“We let it slip in the second-last over [of Zimbabwe’s innings],” said Taylor. “Credit must be given to Pakistan because they held their nerve. But we will hold our heads high and take positives out of this loss.”

Teams clash in favoured format

Pakistan’s impressive One-Day International (ODI) run will be put to test by Zimbabwe as the hosts return to playing a format they are more comfortable with.

The two teams lock horns in the first ODI at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo today with Zimbabwe keen to put the seven-wicket loss in the one-off Test behind them.

There, as is so often the case, Zimbabwe lost the plot after playing well during the first three days. A collapse and purposeful bowling by newcomer Aizaz Cheema and off-spinners Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez exposed Zimbabwe’s lack of patience.

But come the ODI series, Zimbabwe’s recent win over Bangladesh puts them in good stead. Add to this Pakistan’s resolve to experiment and test the young blood, and the hosts stand a good chance.

Pitch likely to be friendly for batsmen

With the pitch speculated to be a batting-friendly track and offering some assistance to the spinners, Pakistan will think of it as a good sign. Hafeez seems to be coming of age following a string of impressive performance and Ajmal has always troubled oppositions.

The key would be to keep improving the batting performance, which was aided by Zimbabwe’s lacklustre approach in the Test match where the hosts missed ample chances to contain Pakistan.

Zimbabwe coach Alan Butcher has promised to keep the fight going.

“We would expect the attitude to be as positive as it was going into the Test match,” said Butcher. “We want to let Pakistan know that they are in for a good game of cricket.”

Odds in favour of Pakistan

While records heavily tip in Pakistan’s favour – 37 wins and two losses in 41 ODIs against Zimbabwe – the hosts would also be wary of the return of former captain Shoaib Malik, who will play his first ODI since the Asia Cup encounter against India in June 2010, and will bolster a middle-order already boasting big names Misbahul Haq, Younus Khan and Umar Akmal.

Brian Vitori, who took successive five-wicket hauls in his first two ODIs in the series against Bangladesh, will be Zimbabwe’s surprise weapon. However, dry weather is likely to rule out much of the threat.

Our goal is still to win, says Misbah

Pakistan captain Misbah, who already aimed at winning the series for outgoing coach Waqar Younis, said that the presence of youngsters will not come in his way.

“We came with a lot of youngsters and everyone must get a chance to play. But our goal still is to win.”

He praised Cheema for his eight wickets in the Test match and got among the runs himself as well. The middle-order fared reasonably too and with Pakistan not having lost an ODI series since the one against South Africa in the UAE last year, the tourists would be looking for a solid start here.

Chief selector warns squad against complacency in ODI series.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Selector Mohsin Khan said that the selection committee achieved the target of finding a talented paceman as the team won the one-off Test against Zimbabwe by seven wickets.

Mohsin said the win was a result of team work and praised debutant fast-bowler Aizaz Cheema, who celebrated his 32nd birthday yesterday and claimed eight wickets on a pitch where other pacemen suffered. “I won’t rate the win as a huge achievement,” Mohsin told The Express Tribune. “The win wasn’t against a top-class team but we have achieved our target of finding a fast-bowler who can support the other pacers.”

Pakistan’s decision to rest the pace duo of Umar Gul and Wahab Riaz drew criticism from various former cricketers but the chief selector said the decision was taken in the team’s interest and it proved a useful one.

“This tour was the best opportunity for youngsters and they justified our decision especially Cheema. I watched each of his deliveries and he impressed me with his fitness and commitment.”

Rues missed opportunity by batsmen

However, Mohsin rued missed opportunities of scoring centuries by captain Misbahul Haq (66), Azhar Ali (75) and Younus Khan (88) in the first-innings.

“They should have converted their innings into centuries,” he said while praising the performance of man-of-the-match Mohammad Hafeez before warning the team of complacency in the upcoming limited-overs series.

“Zimbabwe will be tough in that format and the team should not take the hosts lightly.”

Zaheer impressed with comeback

Former captain Zaheer Abbas said he was delighted to see the team fight back and win the match.

“Pakistan had an ordinary start to the Test match, which seemed to be heading towards a dull draw after a good show by the hosts,” he said. “The way the team made their comeback was a very good sign.”

Hafeez stars as tourists clinch seven-wicket win in one-off match.

Pakistan defeated Zimbabwe by seven wickets at Queens Sports Club, a few minutes before lunch on the final day to clinch the one-off Test.

Chasing 88 for victory after bundling the home team out for 141 in the second-innings, Pakistan were home in the 22nd over with the winning runs hit by captain Misbahul Haq.

Birthday boy tastes first-over success

The fifth day began with Zimbabwe reeling at 135 for eight, a slim lead of 81 in the second-innings, and Pakistan were quickly in control. The overnight pair of wicket-keeper Tatenda Taibu and Kyle Jarvis, who had put on 66 after the hosts were reduced to 69 for eight, could not last long as debutant Aizaz Cheema, celebrating his 32nd birthday, broke through in the first over of the day.

In his next over, Cheema finished off the job and claimed his fourth wicket of the innings as last man Chris Mpofu was caught behind by Adnan Akmal.

The fast-bowler finished with four for 24 to compliment his four wickets in the first-innings to finish with eight for the match.

Having been put into bat, Zimbabwe were all out for 412 in their first-innings before Pakistan replied with 466 to establish a lead of 54. There was not much in it at that stage but spinners Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal spun Pakistan into contention, leaving the tourists with the prospect of a routine mop-up operation.

‘Bowling first may have been wrong’

Misbah praised the opposition after the match was evenly balanced till the third day.

“Maybe I was mistaken asking Zimbabwe to bat first,” said Misbah. “The pitch had green patches. But the bowlers stuck to the task well. Our batting was excellent and of good quality. I’m proud of the youngsters, especially Cheema.

“Zimbabwe are a good side and they will improve with experience and become a strong force in the game.”

Hafeez bagged the man-of-the-match award after he struck a career-high 119 and also claimed best innings figure of four for 31.

Zimbabwe’s 412 looked likely to secure at least a draw, which was their prime target in terms of gaining respect after returning from a self-imposed six-year Test exile. But seven missed chances in Pakistan’s first-innings and the match slipped away.

The first of three One-Day Internationals will be played September 8 followed by two Twenty20s.

Mohammad Hafeez

“I’m very satisfied. We were away from international cricket for three months and we worked hard. My plan was to play aggressively. My bowling is up to the team’s requirement and I’ll give credit to the fast-bowlers.”

Misbahul Haq

“We were under a bit of pressure when they made 412 but our bowlers did a tremendous job. Credit goes to their batsmen but we responded very well. I’m pleased with Cheema, he’s a hard worker.”

Brendan Taylor

“There were lots of positives but we have to improve. I think it was nerves followed by quality bowling. We let ourselves down and dropped catches did not help. But credit to Pakistan. However, we will keep improving.”

Mohsin Khan

“I won’t rate the win as a huge achievement. It wasn’t against a top-class team but we have achieved our target of finding a fast-bowler who can support the other pacers. This tour was the best opportunity for youngsters.”

Sloppy fielding hurts hosts' chances of forcing a result in one-off Test.

Hosts Zimbabwe missed the chance to pile the pressure on Pakistan by dropping five catches as the tourists piled up 357 for five in their first-innings thanks to Mohammad Hafeez's first away ton on the third day of the one-off Test in Bulawayo.

Zimabwe, all out for 412 in their innings, were also left ruing a fumbled run-out opportunity that could have slowed Pakistan's bid to build on an overnight score of 116 for one. Umar Akmal's dismissal on the last ball of the day provided some hope for the hosts who will be looking to get into the visitors' tail today.

Hafeez and Azhar build on

Earlier, Hafeez and Azhar Ali built a solid 188-run second-wicket partnership for Pakistan, that saw the in-form opener get two lucky escapes on his way to his third Test century. However, Hafeez's luck ran out two balls from lunch when on 119 he was dismissed by Hamilton Masakadza. Hafeez's 119 included 17 fours and also saw him pass the 1000-run landmark.

Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor persisted with seamers through most of the morning with Chris Mpofu bowling ten straight overs but finally opted for a change of tactics when he brought on Masakadza and it duly paid off with Hafeez's rush of blood.

Ali's vigil came to an end when on 75 he was caught by former captain Tatenda Taibu off Lamb. However, the seasoned Younus Khan and captain Misbahul Haq built up a painstaking partnership of exactly 100 runs for the fifth wicket before the captain was dismissed for 66.

Younus was unbeaten on 61 off 193 deliveries and will be joined by Adnan Akmal today, as Pakistan look to overtake Zimbabwe's total.

Hafeez felt that despite Pakistan's slow progress, the visitors had a good chance of forcing a positive result.

"The pitch is getting slower and if we can get some lead, we can put pressure on Zimbabwe," he said. "All credit to them for playing a disciplined game at the moment."

Mawoyo carries bat as hosts rack up 412, Pakistan reach 116 by close on day two.

Tino Mawoyo became the third Zimbabwean player to carry his bat as the opener made 163 not out in his side’s first innings total of 412 on the second day of the Test against Pakistan at Queens Sports Club.

In reply, Pakistan reached 116 for one after 29 possible overs with opener Mohammad Hafeez going strong after an unbeaten 79 off just 93 balls.

The all-rounder lost Taufeeq Umar in the second over with the score on eight but then steered Pakistan to safety with Azhar Ali. Hafeez’s innings included 15 boundaries and a six as Pakistan replied in a solid fashion after Zimbabwe had put Pakistan attack to the sword.

Mawoyo’s day

The day belonged to the 25-year-old, who picked up where he left off the first day as he stone-walled the Pakistan attack. Resuming on 82 he went on to reach his maiden Test century and as wickets fell around him, the batsman pushed on past the 150-mark.

When last man Chris Mpofu was bowled by Aizaz Cheema to signal the tea interval, Mawoyo had become the 47th batsman in the history of Test cricket to carry his bat.

Earlier, resuming on 245 for four, Zimbabwe lost Craig Ervine early when he gave Junaid Khan his first Test wicket, caught and bowled by for 49, ending a fifth wicket partnership of 94 with Mawoyo. Debutant Greg Lamb, however, dug in to add another 95 with the opener for the sixth wicket. Mawoyo had a major stroke of luck when he was on 98 as Adnan Akmal missed a stumping. It was his second chance as Sohail Khan dropped him on the boundary.

There was a little bit of uncertainty as he reached his century. Mawoyo thought he was running a leg-bye only to realise it was his all-important 100th run when the umpire failed to signal the extra.

Mawoyo spent a total of 645 minutes at the crease hitting 20 boundaries during the course of his innings.

Only David Houghton, who made 266 in 675 minutes against Sri Lanka in Bulawayo in 1994 and Flower, whose 201 not out against Pakistan in Harare in 1995 spanned 654 minutes, have produced longer innings for Zimbabwe.

When Lamb fell for 38, the Zimbabwe tail fell apart but they still got the side across the psychological 400-odd mark.

Ajmal impresses

Saeed Ajmal bowled with guile and variation that often confused the Zimbabwe batsmen but he was out of luck by finishing with four for 143. It fell to Cheema to clean up with tail and he helped himself to four for 79.

Zimbabwe scored 245 for four as Mowoyo completes maiden test half century at Queens Sports Club.

Rookie opener Tinotenda Mawoyo produced a master-class in concentration as Zimbabwe reached 245 for four at the close of the first day of the one-off Test against Pakistan at Queens Sports Club here Thursday.

Mawoyo, playing in only his second Test, batted right through the day, scoring an unbeaten and unruffled 82 - his maiden half-century - after occupying the crease for six hours and 21 minutes. He faced 213 balls and struck 10 fours.

He also figured in three significant partnerships as Zimbabwe looked to carry on where they left off when they beat Bangladesh in Harare last month.

But all of the Zimbabwe batsmen had to contend with a boxfull of tricks from Pakistan off-spinner Sohail Ajmal who took three of the four wickets to fall as the home batsmen struggled to pick his doosra.

Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq made the contentious decision to bowl first after winning the toss. He pointed to some green on the pitch and said he was not afraid to bat last but local wisdom suggests that the pitch will be flat and slow - most captains prefer to bat first to put up a big score.

It also meant Misbah pitched his own very green attack in at the deep end.

With Zimbabwe making tentative steps back into Test cricket, Pakistan have also used the tour to blood some new players - including their two opening bowlers Aizaz Cheema and Junaid Khan, who are both making their Test debuts, and the third member of the pace attack Sohail Khan, who is playing just his second Test.

The three quick bowlers could make no impression on Mawoyo and Vusi Sibanda who put on 71 for the first wicket and it was left to the more experienced spin of Ajmal to put the batsmen under any great pressure.

After the aggressive Sibanda went for 45 to a smart stumping by Adnan Akmal after being outwitted by the off-spinner's doosra, Ajmal returned after lunch to bowl Mazakadza and trap Taylor leg before. At the close he had taken three for 75 from 29 overs.

Either side of tea, Mawoyo joined forces with Tatenda Taibu who struck 44 - a mix of near runouts and outside edges off Ajmal's frequent doosras - in their 65-run partnership before edging Sohail Khan to wicketkeeper Akmal.

Mawoyo then added an unbeaten 69 with Craig Ervine who begins again Friday on 38.

The Zimbabweans will be aware, however, that they have just one more recognised batsman remaining in Greg Lamb, who is making his Test debut as a replacement for the injured Elton Chigumbura, before the tail.

Earlier, Zimbabwe got off to a steady start against Pakistan in their one-off Test at Queens Sports Club here Thursday by scoring 74 for the loss of one wicket at lunch.

Vusi Sibanda made 45 of those with a mix of solid defence and some carefree shots. He was caught by Umar Akmal off Saeed Ajmal a few minutes before the break. Ajmal's guile and turn promises much for the tourists in the mid-session.

Tinotenda Mawoyo has seen the session through, clearly determined not to lose his wicket. But Masakadza looked uncomfortable in his short stay at the crease so far.

The wicket of Sibanda came as great relief to Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq after he had put the Zimbabweans in when winning the toss. He was beginning to doubt the wisdom of his decision, which is unusual on this ground.

His seamers Cheema, Sohail Khan and Juniad Khan had toiled without success against the openers, whose opening partnership of 71 was the highest by Zimbabwe against Pakistan.

At one stage Mawoyo and Sibanda dug so deep they didn't score for 38 successive balls with the score on 30.

Ul Haq stuck to his seamers for 16 overs but the mood changed with the introduction of Saeed Ajmal. He immediately put the Zimbabwean pair in difficulties, turning the ball both ways and getting bounce.

They are undoubtedly conscious of the fact that their tail is rather long, beginning with Raymond Price at number eight.

Mawoyo and Masakadza can be expected to continue defiance rather than any aggression after the break.

Ramiz Raja says Zimbabwe are as likely to win series.

Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja has refused to label the tourists as favourites for Pakistan’s upcoming series in Zimbabwe, arguing that the hosts’ recent surge in form meant that both teams stood an equal chance at winning.

Zimbabwe marked their Test return after a six-year self-imposed exile with a win against Bangladesh before clinching the One-Day International series 3-2.

But Raja said that Pakistan lost the favourites’ tag after including too many new faces.

“Pakistan are no more the favourites,” said Raja. “The new players in the team are going to be under pressure and this is why both sides are on equal footing.”

The former batsman added the team was already rebuilding and the induction of young faces was risky.

“The induction of one or two players was more suitable. Pakistan aren’t in a position to experiment. The team’s performance would now depend on these new players.”

Pleased at Malik’s return

Meanwhile, Raja was pleased after Shoaib Malik earned a recall for the Zimbabwe series.

“The integrity committee’s scrutiny of his accounts would surely be on his mind but I believe he’s lucky to have a chance against a weaker side.”

Tourists take on minnows in one-off Test from tomorrow.

Having negotiated the first hurdle in their campaign to justify Test nation status by beating Bangladesh in a one-off Test two weeks ago, Zimbabwe now face a much higher fence on Thursday - Pakistan.

The single Test match, which starts Thursday, will be followed by three ODI's and two Twenty-20s.

Zimbabwe was granted a return to Test cricket by the ICC last year after a gap of six years. They had been obliged to field a weak side following a strike of nearly all their professionals and two consequent Test defeats by an innings and more than 200 runs.

Withdrawal from Tests was inevitable and those years have been used to rebuild. With just what success is now under the microscope with three successive tours - by Bangladesh, followed by Pakistan and in October/November New Zealand.

These opponents are considered by the ICC to be ones a nascent Zimbabwe can best cope with.

The new Zimbabweans got off to a good start two weeks ago in beating Bangladesh by 130 runs and then by 3-2 in an ODI series.

Now they are called upon to move up a big step. Pakistan will inevitably start favourites, even though there appears to be continuing discord in their camp.

Coach Waqar Younis suddenly declared his resignation last year with the Zimbabwe tour his intended last.

And Pakistan will also not have Shahid Afridi on the tour as he has said he will not work with Younis, nor with the present executive.

They were also in dressing room disorder here in 1995 when they lost to Zimbabwe by an innings, with Grant Flower, the present batting coach, scoring an undefeated 201.

However, their overall record is perhaps the one to be taken most account of. Pakistan have won eight of the 14 played, with two defeats. Their last encounter was in 1992 when Pakistan won both Tests, by 119 runs and by 10 wickets.

Earlier this year they broke even 1-1 in a West Indies series, also winning one and drawing one against New Zealand.

Pakistan have rested Umar Gull, Wahib Riaz and Abdur Rehman on this tour, bringing back Imran Farhat, Adnan Akmal and Sohail Tanveer. They introduce Ramiz Raja, Yasir Shah and Aizaz Cheema.

Zimbabwe are expecting seamer Brian Vitori back after a leg muscle strain. But he still needs to prove fitness. He had two five wicket hauls against Bangladesh and is their key strike bowler.

Pakistan squad:

Misbah-ul-haq (capt), Mohammad Hafeez, Taufic Umar, Imran Farhat, Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Rameez Raja Jnr, Adnan Akmal (wk), Saeed Asmal, Yasir Shah, Sohail Tanveer, Ramiz Raja, Yasir Shah, Aizaz Cheema.

Zimbabwe have not yet formally released names in their squad but the team will be selected from:

Brendan Taylor (capt), Vusi Sibanda, Hamilton Masakadza, Tatenda Taibu (wk), Forbes Mtizwa, Craig Ervine, Malcolm Waller, Elton Chigumbura, Kyle Jarivis, Raymond Price, Christopher Mpofu, Prosper Utseya, Brian Vitori.

Haq hopes his team will put on a winning performance to give outgoing coach Waqar Younis a befitting farewell.

Pakistan captain Misbahul Haq said on Thursday he hoped his team would put on a winning performance against Zimbabwe to give outgoing coach Waqar Younis a befitting farewell.

The new-look team left for Zimbabwe after Waqar announced he will step down as head coach following the 24-day tour due to health problems.

"We were shocked by the sudden announcement of him leaving after the tour, but we all respect that and want to do well and win the coming series for the coach," Misbah told AFP.

(Read: Time to go, says Waqar)

Pakistan will open the tour on Sunday with a two-day practice match in Bulawayo before the only Test of the trip, at the same venue, starts on September 1.

The team will also play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches.

Misbah said the young players were ready to make their mark.

"All the players have performed well at the domestic level and were selected on merit so they are fully committed to take their chances and contribute in team's performance," he said.

Pakistan are resting frontline pacemen Wahab Riaz and Umar Gul, and have dropped fast bowler Tanvir Ahmed, but Misbah denied the team lacked experience.

"We have some promising fast bowlers, with Sohail Tanveer staging a comeback and I am sure all these bowlers will try their level best to help Pakistan come out victorious on the tour," said Misbah.

He also praised Zimbabwe's recent performances against Bangladesh after their recent Test win and 3-2 victory in the one-day series.

"We are aware of their progress and cannot take them lightly, more so after their wins against Bangladesh," Misbah said.

Speaking at the airport before the team left, Waqar appeared upbeat.

"We have prepared well for the tour and all the players are eager to make their marks at the international level, so I am sure the series will produce good results for us," he said.

Former captain Shoaib Malik also joined the team after being cleared by an Integrity Committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board over allegations of illegal earnings.

Waqar said the inclusion of Malik, who has not played for Pakistan since last year's tour of England, has strengthened the team.

"Malik is an experienced player and I hope he will take this opportunity to cement his place in the team," he said.

All-rounder rules out immediate return after coach says he will step down.

While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has dismissed speculation that Waqar Younis’ decision to resign as coach is to pave way for the return of former captain Shahid Afridi, the all-rounder himself has ruled out reconsidering his retirement for the time being.

Waqar, who was appointed as the head coach last year, surprisingly announced that he will step down after the upcoming Zimbabwe tour. The move has raised questions whether Afridi, who announced a conditional retirement, will return to international cricket.

Afridi and Waqar developed differences over team selection with reports emerging after the former captain returned to Pakistan at the conclusion of the limited-overs leg of the West Indies tour.

Afridi announced his retirement citing differences with the management and stated that he will not return under the current PCB setup.

While Waqar made it clear that his decision is a personal one, Afridi has also ruled out an immediate return to international cricket and said that things needed to get better.

“I’ve always said that I am what I am today because of my national team, which is my identity,” said Afridi.

“I cannot explain the pain of missing so many assignments. I’m itching to make a return but I have to wait for the circumstances to get better.”

However, Afridi termed the recent developments in the team management – that also saw manager Intikhab Alam being removed – as positive.

“Things are getting better and hopefully they would improve further,” said Afridi.

Afridi was also sceptical at the reasons cited by Waqar behind his resignation. “I cannot understand it. If he [Waqar] has health issues than how he is he supervising the team’s training camp?

“There must be some other issue which should be resolved.”

‘Waqar not forced to resign’

Meanwhile, a PCB official denied that Waqar’s move was part of a plan to insist Afridi to make a return to international cricket.

“Not a single change in team management is linked to the Afridi saga,” a PCB official told The Express Tribune.

“Inikhab [Alam] and Aaqib [Javed] were removed from the team management because they were required in the academies.

“Waqar was also not forced to quit as it was his personal decision. There were some genuine health reasons because of which the PCB agreed to accept his resignation.”

Former captain’s return welcomed, Misbah plans perfect farewell for Waqar.

Two days after being cleared by the integrity committee, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has now included former captain Shoaib Malik in the squad for the Zimbabwe tour.

Malik, who was earlier put on the list of standby players when the squad was announced, was cleared to play for Pakistan after satisfying the integrity committee over a certain amount in his England bank account.

‘It’s like I’m making my debut’

Malik was delighted at having his name included in the squad after being overlooked for over a year.

“I’m delighted and looking forward to putting on a good show,” said Malik who joined the team’s training camp on the final day. “I’ll give my best to play a leading role and will live up to the selectors’ expectations.”

The former captain, who last played for Pakistan in the Test series against England in 2010, said the return was like making a debut.

“It’s like a debut for me but I’m confident of doing well.”

The 29-year old added that he had a lot of cricket left in him.

(Read: Malik now available to play for Pakistan)

A good sign: Waqar

Pakistan head coach Waqar Younis also termed Malik’s return a good sign for the national team.

“His inclusion will bolster us,” said Waqar. “He has a lot of cricket left in him.”

Mohsin terms inclusion beneficial

Meanwhile, chief selector Mohsin Khan hoped that the former captain’s inclusion will strengthen the team.

“After discussions with the team management everyone agreed that his experience would be beneficial.”

Malik showed worth: Misbah

Pakistan captain Misbahul Haq also welcomed Malik’s return and said that the seasoned batsman justified his place in the team after a good show.

“Malik’s return will be a valuable addition because he’s fit and in form,” he said.

Sohail questions decision

However, former captain Aamir Sohail said that Malik has returned due to political pressure.

“The PCB has cleared him due to political pressure,” said Sohail.

“If there was no charge against him, then how did the PCB sideline him for such a long period?”

However, Sohail hoped that Malik would prove his worth.

“He’s a talented player and hopefully he’ll perform well.”

Misbah promises fitting send-off for coach

Meanwhile, Misbah has promised on giving the perfect send-off to Waqar who will step down after the series.

“He’s already told us that this series shouldn’t be taken lightly,” Misbah told reporters. “I’ve seen his passion and we have to give him a good farewell by sweeping the series so that when he departs he can realise that his team has done wonders under him.” (WITH ADDITIONAL REPORTING BY UMAR FAROOQ)

Mohsin Khan

“Malik’s name was already in the reserve list of players for the tour and the PCB integrity committee cleared him last week. After discussions with the team management everyone agreed that his experience would be beneficial.”

Aamir Sohail

“The PCB has cleared him due to political pressure. If there was no charge against him, then how did the PCB sideline him for such a long period? But he’s a talented player and hopefully he’ll perform well.”

Coach to step down after Zimbabwe series, cites personal and medical reason for walking out.

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis will step down as Pakistan coach after the tour of Zimbabwe due to ‘personal and medical reasons’.

Waqar, Pakistan’s 15th coach since 1995, was appointed after the winless tour of Australia last year where he also served as the team’s bowling consultant. His regime saw Pakistan reach the semi-finals of the 2010 World Twenty20 as well as the 2011 World Cup but also witnessed the spot-fixing saga.

News comes as surprise

Waqar’s decision astonished the cricketing quarters, especially after he confirmed that his stepping down was his personal decision and was not instigated due to the now-public conflict between himself and former captain Shahid Afridi.

“I had filed my resignation a week ago which has eventually been accepted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB),” Waqar told a press conference in Lahore. “But they asked me to continue until the Zimbabwe tour. After that, I won’t be available. Whatever time I have spent, I thoroughly enjoyed it and apart from all those controversies and rollercoaster rides, every thing went according to plan.”

Intikhab’s report

It seems that Intikhab Alam, who was the team manager on the tour of the West Indies, had questioned Waqar’s involvement in team matters in a report handed over to the PCB chairman. However, Waqar categorically denied that those reasons led to his exit, instead confirming that there was no conflict or disagreement with the board or the management.

“I can confirm that my decision to resign is not a result of any sort of conflict with the PCB chairman or with the team management. It is nothing to do with team selection either. Had everything in my personal life – that is, my wife’s health and my own – been all right, I would not have taken this decision. But I do not want to fail to do the job justice because of the personal problems on my mind.”

Decision taken recently

In an emotional press conference, it was obvious that the ‘problems’ he spoke of were causing him great distress, resulting in him keeping busy by even bowling in the nets during the training camp.

“I only told the players on Saturday and they were shocked because until today, the matter was between me and the PCB. But I’m sure that this young team will do well.”

Asked whether he was satisfied with his tenure or not, Waqar paused momentarily, and responded with passion.

“Once you get complacent, it all ends there. There were ups and downs. There were many controversies but at the same time we had a lot of success and I am proud of and pleased with that. Despite all that has happened, the same Pakistan team managed to beat every team in the world.”

The PCB confirmed that Waqar’s resignation has been accepted as it starts its hunt to find his successor for which the first challenge will be a series against Sri Lanka in the UAE starting October.

Says he was appointed on request of team management.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday appointed former Test batsman Ijaz Ahmed as assistant coach of the national cricket team, and he will be travelling with the side for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe next week.

The PCB said Ijaz had been appointed on the request of the team management.

Interestingly, Ijaz has been working in the national training camp with the team as the batting consultant. Last year he was a part of Waqar Younis' coaching team during the Asia Cup and the tour of England.

The 42-year-old Ijaz, who scored 3,315 runs in 60 Tests, including 12 centuries before retiring from Test cricket in 2001, was famous for his hard-hitting. He also played 250 One-day Internationals, hitting 6,564 runs with 10 centuries.

The Pakistan team is due to leave for Zimbabwe on August 25 for a one-off Test match, two Twenty20 games and five ODIs.

The PCB changed the national team management for the Zimbabwe tour recently, replacing manager Intikhab Alam with Bureaucrat Naved Cheema and also replacing Aaqib Javed and Shahid Aslam on the coaching staff.

Cheema, who is also a member of the governing board, admitted that the national team's image had taken a beating because of scandals and controversies in the last one year and half but expressed confidence that things would work out great now.

"I am confident that things will work out smoothly now in the team because lines have been drawn clearly for the players and officials and everyone has been told about his responsibilities and informed that there will be no compromise on discipline at all," Cheema said.

The presence of three openers in Pakistan’s squad will increase competition and force the players to put on their best, according to Taufeeq Umar.

Speaking at the training camp for Pakistan’s Zimbabwe-bound squad, Taufeeq praised the presence of coaches at the camp.

“We are trying to develop the skill of spending time in the middle and staying at the crease for a long period,” he said. “We’re practicing hard to come up to expectations.”

Taufeeq and Imran Farhat have been Pakistan’s performing openers in the Test series against South Africa. However, the partnership was broken by the board before Taufeeq earned a recall for the tour of Zimbabwe.

“We’ve improved during the last few months and the debate over our faltering openers is fading out.”

Taufeeq was a regular member of the side in the early part of the last decade but spent fours years being sidelined. “I would overcome the gap with hard work.”

Left-arm fast-bowler wants to cement his place in the side after Zimbabwe tour.

Pakistan’s upcoming fast-bowler Junaid Khan is not under any kind of pressure to quickly fill the void created by the omission of senior fast-bowlers for the tour of Zimbabwe as well as the spot-fixing allegations but will instead concentrate on his performance to consolidate his place in the team.

Talking during Pakistan’s training camp taking place in Lahore, Junaid added that his aim was to cement his place in the playing-eleven via continuous improvement and that was the reason why he continued playing cricket even in the off season.

“I chose county because here in Pakistan the domestic season had not started and I wanted to keep myself going.”

Junaid has played seven One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and a single Twenty20 for Pakistan and was part of their World Cup squad as well as the Test squad on the tour of West Indies that followed the mega event. He was also Pakistan’s second-highest wicket-taker in the two-match ODI series against Ireland on the way back from West Indies.

After the series against Ireland, Junaid was signed up by Lancashire and had an impressive stint with the county, picking up 12 wickets in eight Twenty20 matches at an economy rate of six.

“County cricket has not only kept me busy but also provided me with the required experience,” he said. “In fact, county cricket did not allow a gap between my playing days and helped me improve my bowling ability. By playing county and international cricket, I am now fully aware of the rigours of international cricket and the continuous play will help me against Zimbabwe.”

Junaid, 21, lauded Zimbabwe’s return to Test cricket where they beat the touring Bangladesh team, ending their six-year self-imposed exile with a win. Given their recent performance, Junaid confirmed that neither he nor the team will be taking them lightly.

“Zimbabwe are playing relatively well and it won’t be easy to beat them at their home and in their conditions,” said Junaid. “But I would make an impression by playing positive cricket and playing according to my responsibilities. My job is to deliver and fill the void created by the senior bowlers and make a place for myself in the team. With that, I’d like to win matches for Pakistan.”

Misbah wary of void left by seniors, warns team not to underestimate Zimbabwe.

Pakistan cricket captain Misbahul Haq urged his team’s new talent to take advantage of the tour of Zimbabwe to rebuild the crisis-hit national side.

A new-look Pakistan play a two-day practice match in Bulawayo from August 28, then a Test at the same venue from September 1. They also play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and two Twenty20s on the tour.

Misbah will lead Pakistan in all three formats of the game after Shahid Afridi retired when he was dumped as ODI captain two months ago. Misbah said the new players must take their chances.

‘Chance to shine’

“All the new players who have taken the place of the seniors have performed at domestic level and this tour of Zimbabwe will give them a chance to show their ability at an international level,” Misbah told a press conference.

Pakistan have surprisingly rested pacemen Wahab Riaz and Umar Gul, and dropped Tanvir Ahmed. The selectors recalled Sohail Tanvir and Sohail Khan, and included fast-bowlers Junaid Khan and uncapped Aizaz Cheema.

Left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman, Pakistan’s successful bowler in the West Indies on their last tour, is also rested in favour of uncapped leg-spinner Yasir Shah.

“After a long time a number of seniors have left together, so every team comes across such times and then replacements are found by trying out some new players who can play like those seniors,” said Misbah.

Senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf lost favour with the selectors, while wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal, former captain Shoaib Malik and seasoned leg-spinner Danish Kaneria were left out over fixing suspicions.

Showing respect to the opponents

Meanwhile, Misbah denied Pakistan were not taking Zimbabwe seriously.

“We are not taking any team lightly. If we relax then we are in trouble and by giving chances to youngsters we are not experimenting because all these young players have come into the team on merit.”

Pakistan fly out to Zimbabwe on August 25.

On their return to Test cricket after five years, Zimbabwe beat Bangladesh in the only Test and are 2-0 ahead in the ongoing five-match ODI series.

After the tour of Zimbabwe, Pakistan play Sri Lanka in three Tests, five ODIs and one Twenty20 match in the United Arab Emirates in October and November.

Umar Gul

“I’ve increased my training and giving my best to regain the rhythm. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance against Sri Lanka and England. I feel I can serve the country for many years. Temporary setbacks come but one has to overcome them by positive thinking.”

Ahmed Shahzad

“It’s always difficult to make a comeback because you have to work twice as hard. I’m hopeful that I’ll get my place back after a good domestic season. I didn’t breach discipline. If that’s the case, I want to ask the PCB to tell me where I was wrong.”

Fast-bowler working hard to regain place in the team.

After being left out of the Zimbabwe touring party, Pakistan fast-bowler Umar Gul said that he is focusing on returning to the national team soon enough.

Gul, who has spearheaded the team’s pace attack after fast-bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were banned by the International Cricket Council, was not picked for the Zimbabwe series along with Wahab Riaz.

While chief selector Mohsin Khan said the pacemen had been rested, there has been speculation that Gul was overlooked on grounds of poor fitness and an unimpressive show in recent assignments.

However, the fast-bowler, who has 125 Tests and 134 One-Day International wickets, was not becoming a part of the debate and focusing on his return.

“I’m just working hard to get my place back in the national team,” Gul told reporters in Karachi.

“I’ve increased my training and giving my best to regain the rhythm.”

The 27-year-old said that he was targeting the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka and England. “I’ll feature in domestic tournaments to show my true worth,” he said. “I’m hoping to put on a good show to impress the selectors.

“Hopefully, I will get a chance for series against Sri Lanka and England.”

Gul, who has played 35 Tests and 90 ODIs, added that he had a lot left in him and was expecting to serve the country for a long time.

“I feel I can serve the country for many more years. Temporary setbacks do come but one has to overcome them by positive thinking.”

Shahzad vows to make a comeback

Meanwhile, discarded opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad has said he would make a comeback by proving his worth in domestic events.

“It’s always difficult to make a comeback because you have to work twice as hard,” said Shehzad.

“But I’m hopeful that I’ll get my place back after giving a good show in the coming domestic season.”

In a recent interview, former team manager Intikhab Alam said that the opener was ignored due to disciplinary issues but the 19-year old refuted the claim.

“I don’t have attitude problems and I didn’t breach discipline. If that’s the case, I want to ask the PCB to tell me where I was wrong.”

Players to undergo daily lectures ahead of Zimbabwe series.

While Pakistan coach Waqar Younis concentrates on the physical training of players, the team’s new manager Naveed Akram Cheema will stress on discipline during the camp that starts tomorrow for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.

The week-long camp at Qaddafi Stadium, Lahore, will be held in two sessions with the team departing for Zimbabwe on August 25 for the tour that includes a one-off Test, three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and two Twenty20s.

According to the team manager, the first session of the training camp, from 3 to 6 pm, will see players practise in the nets apart from having fielding drills. Players will spend the second session in the gym.

Manager to be seen in action

However, the camp will not be restricted to just physical training of players as Cheema has planned disciplinary lectures for players during the whole week.

“The camp will not just be about training,” Cheema told The Express Tribune.

“I’ll be giving lectures before the training sessions for around a couple of hours as guidelines on maintaining discipline.

“Players will also be informed about the strict penalties they might face for discipline breaches and each one of them will have to attend the lectures.”

Cheema, who replaced Intikhab Alam for the Zimbabwe series, said he has taken the tour as a mission and will give his best to avoid any controversy that features the national team members.

‘Scandals have hit Pakistan hard’

Pakistan lost three players - Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir - over their role in a spot-fixing scandal while disputes with the management also cost former captain Shahid Afridi his place in the team.

Cheema was keen to make a fresh controversy-free start. “My target will be to avoid controversies and scandals that have affected the national team a lot.

“I would not hesitate in taking action against any player to ensure discipline during the tour.”

County players to attend camp

Meanwhile, the manager informed that fast-bowler Junaid Khan (Lancashire) and Saeed Ajmal (Worcestershire) have been released by their county sides for national duty.

“Both of them will attend the camp. Junaid has arrived and Ajmal is expected to join the camp [today],” added Cheema.

Pakistan start the tour with a two-day warm-up game against Zimbabwe XI at Bulawayo on August 28 before the only Test commences from September 1 at the same venue.

Afridi expects close contest

Former captain Shahid Afridi said that he expects Zimbabwe to stand up and offer a tough fight to Pakistan. Zimbabwe, on their Test return after a self-imposed six-year exile, outclassed Bangladesh and the former captain felt their performance makes the upcoming series interesting. “Zimbabwe are playing good cricket,” Afridi told reporters in Karachi. “I’m expecting good matches in the series considering Zimbabwe’s performance who will also have the home advantage.”

Chief selector agrees but justifies choices, says backup needs to be ready.

In response to criticism over team selection for the Zimbabwe series, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Selector Mohsin Khan said that the country required a strong back-up of players and the selection committee had to therefore take a gamble.

The selectors dropped pace spearheads Umar Gul and Wahab Riaz while spinner Abdur Rehman was also left out. All-rounder Sohail Tanvir, and fast-bowlers Aizaz Cheema and Sohail Khan were included in their place for the tour, comprising a one-off Test, three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and two Twenty20s.

However, the selectors’ choices drew criticism from various quarters including former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram who was shocked over the exclusion of Riaz. Former chief selector Iqbal Qasim said that the gamble may prove costly against Zimbabwe, who beat Bangladesh in their comeback Test.

‘Selectors needed to take risk’

Mohsin, while agreeing that selectors have taken a risk, felt it was the need of the hour.

“Pakistan requires a pace backup immediately,” Mohsin told The Express Tribune. “We needed to take a few risks and I haven’t hesitated to gamble in the interest of the sport in Pakistan.”

Pakistan lost two of their main fast-bowlers – Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir – last year over their role in the spot-fixing scandal following which the burden fell on Gul and Riaz to carry the team. Considering their importance, the chief selector said that saving them from injury was another reason for leaving the duo behind.

“We’ve to play important series against Sri Lanka and England after the Zimbabwe tour and we cannot afford to lose our main fast-bowlers especially when we lack quality pacemen.”

‘Zimbabwe not an easy opponent’

Mohsin, however, cautioned the team over taking Zimbabwe lightly.

“I’ve repeatedly said that no side is easy. That’s why we have not made big changes to our batting line-up. But a platform was needed to test the youngsters while looking ahead to the future,” added the chief selector.

“Zimbabwe played well against Bangladesh but I’m hopeful our three bowlers along with Junaid Khan will come good against them.”

The former batsman also ruled out chances of late changes to the squad.

“Apart from injuries, we’re not going to make any changes.”

Wasim Akram

“I don’t mind taking Zimbabwe lightly and giving chances to youngsters. But it is surprising that you rest Riaz who has just started his career a year ago. The idea to groom a young paceman is to give him more and more opportunities and not to rest him.”

Mohsin Khan

“Pakistan requires a pace backup immediately. We needed to take a few risks and I’ve never hesitated to gamble in the interest of the team. We’ve to play important series after the Zimbabwe tour and we cannot afford to lose our main fast-bowlers.”

Wasim Akram says excluding pacemen Wahab Riaz and Umar Gul from forthcoming Zimbabwe tour will hamper their progress.

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram said Monday he was surprised over the decision to exclude pacemen Wahab Riaz and Umar Gul from the forthcoming Zimbabwe tour, saying it would hamper their progress.

Riaz and Gul were surprisingly rested while Tanveer Ahmed dropped for the tour which includes one Test, three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches, starting later this month.

The 15-man tour party includes four inexperienced pacemen in Sohail Tanveer, Sohail Khan, Aizaz Cheema and Junaid Khan, a strategy Wasim fears may backfire on Pakistan.

"I don't mind taking Zimbabwe lightly and giving chances to youngsters but it is surprising that you rest Riaz who has just started his career a year ago and is progressing. He doesn't need rest," Wasim told AFP.

Gul, Wasim said, would have found his lost form in Zimbabwe.

"I have seen that out-of-form paceman get back to form by playing easier teams, but here we have rested the two main pacemen and they were allowed to play county cricket, instead of doing the national duty," said Wasim.

Riaz represented Kent while Gul played for Sussex in the Twenty20 league in England.

Wasim described Riaz as Pakistan's future.

"The idea to groom a young paceman is to give him more and more opportunities and not to rest him," said Wasim, who took 414 Test and 502 one-day wickets during his illustrious career.

"Riaz needs opportunities and it's not wise for him to rest at this stage."

Wasim said teams like India and Australia who played continuously could rest key players.

"If we see India giving rest to their key players, its understandable because they play too much cricket throughout the year but Pakistan rarely plays Tests and here we are without our rising paceman," said Wasim.

The 26-year-old Riaz, a left-armer like Wasim, has so far played seven Tests since making his debut on last year's tour of England. He has also played 22 one-day internationals.

Wasim praised Cheema's selection.

"Cheema has been leading wicket-taker in Pakistan's domestic season, so he deserved a chance but there should be more consistency in selection," said Wasim.

As the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) mulls over the replacement of the aging Misbahul Haq, the 37-year-old captain of the team, former players believe the return of Shahid Afridi can resolve most part of the crisis.

While the PCB did not announce a deputy to Misbah for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour, reports have suggested that the board is considering grooming a player as the future leader of the team.

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis had also expressed his concern over the matter and had requested the board to groom a young captain while Misbah also admitted that he would not be able to play for a long time.

However, former players, who acknowledged the need for a long-term option, also believed that the return of Afridi is the best immediate solution to the captaincy problem as far as limited-overs cricket is concerned.

The all-rounder, who led Pakistan for over a year including in the World Cup earlier this year, announced his retirement from international cricket after citing differences with the PCB and said that he would not return under the current setup.

‘Afridi needs to return’

Former chief selector Iqbal Qasim believed a solution of the issue, given the current dearth of choices, is the return of the all-rounder.

‘Afridi’s return can resolve this issue,” the former left-arm spinner told The Express Tribune.

“When he does, a new captain can be groomed under him. Afridi has at least four years of cricket left in him and he’ll have ample time to groom a youngster unlike Misbah.

“In the best interest of the team both parties [PCB and Afridi] should show some flexibility and find a solution.”

Wasim echoes the same view

Meanwhile, former captain Wasim Akram also stressed the need for Afridi to come out of retirement.

“I won’t speak much on the issue but Afridi is needed,” Wasim told reporters in Karachi.

“He has a lot of cricket left in him and he can still do a lot for the Pakistan team.”

Former fast-bowler Jalauddin said a long-term plan was needed to groom a captain. “The PCB has not displayed good planning as it selects and drops players on an agenda.

“The board should seek the combined advice of the game’s technocrats, which will be helpful,” said Jalaluddin.

The former cricketer added that Afridi had shown good results after being handed the captaincy at a time of crisis.

“Afridi was the best available limited-overs captain and he proved it with the results,” said Jalaluddin.

“The PCB should ask him to return in the best interest of country’s cricket. Misbah is doing a fine job but Afridi will be needed in his absence.”

It’s a difficult job but achieving targets is not impossible: Cheema.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has wasted little time in conveying to the new Pakistan team manager Naveed Akram Cheema that maintaining discipline in the camp would be his utmost responsibility during the forthcoming tour of Zimbabwe.

Cheema, a member of the PCB’s governing board, replaced the experienced Intikhab Alam for the tour and will accompany the squad to Zimbabwe where Pakistan will play one Test, three One-Day Internationals and two Twenty20s.

It has been reliably learnt that the PCB, considering the controversial past few months following the reported differences in the team management, has already started giving guidelines to Cheema who managed Pakistan ‘A’ on their tour of the West Indies.

“Cheema is an experienced person but managing the national team is a serious job,” a PCB official told The Express Tribune.”Obviously maintaining discipline would be his main responsibility and he’d be given guidelines on several sensitive topics including that.

“Given what has been happening with the team in the recent years, people expect a scandal every time and it’s the manager’s main duty to avoid that from surfacing. It’s a tough job for the new manager but if he performs well, he may be retained for future assignments.”

Lectures for manager, captain and coach

The infighting engulfing Pakistan cricket was brought to the surface during the West Indies tour earlier this year when then-captain Shahid Afridi and coach Waqar Younis developed serious differences over team selection with the all-rounder even walking out of team meetings.

The issue brought Pakistan cricket into the headlines for all the wrong reasons yet again and also paved way for Afridi removal as limited-overs captain that was followed by a conditional retirement and a tussle between the player and the board.

With memories of the mess still fresh, the PCB has decided to hold pre-tour lectures to avoid such issues cropping up in the future and has also decided to include the new manager in the lectures.

“Cheema will also be given instructions during the lectures. All members of the team management will be reminded about their domain and will be informed of the repercussions if they cross them. During the lectures, every individual will also be handed instructions on how to deal with the media.”

The official added that the lectures were likely to take place during a conditioning camp prior to the squad’s departure for Zimbabwe.

Cheema hopeful of delivering

Meanwhile, the newly-appointed manager was hopeful of performing his duties with success and without any more controversies.

“It’s a tough job but it’s not impossible to achieve success,” he said while hinting that he will warn the players of strict and prompt action for any wrongdoings. “Problems do exist but if the players are aware that there will be an instant action against them for any wrongdoing, they will avoid such acts.”

The team will leave for Zimbabwe in the last week of August and will start the tour with a two-day warm-up match against Zimbabwe XI from August 28. The one-off Test will take place from September 1 in Bulawayo.
