LAHORE: Lahore High Court on Friday set aside the education cess levied on Lahore Gymkhana and leisure clubs, holding that this amounted to ‘double taxation.’ The court issued the order on a petition moved by several clubs challenging the recovery of the education cess by the Excise and Taxation department. Advocate Khwaja Saeeduz Zafar, the petitioner’s counsel, said the clubs had been paying 16 per cent sales tax. He said the education cess recovery amounted to double taxation. The court, however, allowed the petitions and set aside the tax.
