ISLAMABAD:

After a two-day protest by medical graduates from Cuba, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) on Tuesday agreed to register them for a year.

The students besieged offices of the regulatory body of medical education and kept chanting slogans against it.

About 100 medical graduates were protesting since Monday outside the PMDC for non-issuance of registration certificates for practice in the country.

The students had gone there under a scholarship scheme jointly funded by Pakistani and Cuban governments. However, upon their return, the new management refused to register foreign graduates with PMDC after dissolution of its previous council.

After instructions by the state health minister, Higher Education Commission and PMDC officials held meetings, where it was decided to register the doctors for a year. During the period they will not be allowed to do independent private practice. It was also decided that renewal of registration will depend upon competence certificate from a specialist supervisor.
