PESHAWAR:

At least two soldiers were killed and another was injured when a military convoy was attacked with a roadside bomb in South Waziristan Agency Sunday morning.

Suspected militants had planted an improvised explosive device (IED) by the roadside near Toorwam village in the Sarwaiki area of South Waziristan, the military’s media wing, the ISPR, said in a statement.

The IED was remotely detonated when a military convoy drove past. One of the vehicles in the convoy was destroyed in the attack, killing two soldiers on the spot and injuring another one.

Soon after the attack, security forces launched a search operation in the area to hunt down the attackers. The bodies and the injured soldier were shifted first to Ladha and later airlifted to Peshawar.

Security forces had purged South Waziristan of Taliban militants in an operation, codenamed Rah-i-Nijaat, in 2009. However, some pockets of militants still exist in the mountainous area of Ladha, adjacent to the militant-infested Shawal Valley of North Waziristan.
