PESHAWAR: At least 132 students from the tribal belt have been accepted into various programmes at Edwardes College Peshawar this year under the directives of the college principal.

This was stated in a handout issued on Tuesday. According to the document, Professor Nayyar Firdous, the institute’s principal, met Governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan at Governor House on Tuesday to discuss progress made at the college.

“Edwardes College also waived off tuition fees of Rs5 million for students this year,” read the statement. “It has also waived tuition fees for 35 students from Chitral due to flash floods in the region earlier this year.”

According to the handout, an endowment fund worth Rs2 million has been allotted to the institute so it can sponsor underprivileged students.

The governor appreciated the efforts made by the institute to accommodate students from various parts of K-P and Fata. “The provision for modern educational facilities is among the key priorities of our government,” the handout quoted him as saying.

He added further steps should be taken by schools to provide educational facilities to the students from the tribal areas. “Tribal students are competent and should be provided educational facilities,” the document quoted Mehtab as saying. “In order to keep the educated youth of our society connected with the world, we are committed to provide them with all facilities.”

Earlier, the governor had directed all public sector universities and colleges of the province to waive tuition fees of students from Chitral for one academic year.
