KARACHI:

A sessions court reissued non-bailable warrants on Saturday for the arrest of an accused in six cases pertaining to target killings and possessing illicit weapons.

The South district additional district and sessions judge, Sikandar Ameer Pahore, re-issued non-bailable warrants against Rizwan Qureshi. He ordered the police to arrest the accused and produce him in the court by October 27. According to the prosecution, Qureshi was arrested in June 2013 for allegedly carrying a sub-machine gun and confessing to other crimes.

Qureshi and his accomplices are facing the charge of possessing illicit weapons and murdering five people. The accused made it to the headlines in February, when the Rangers filed a joint investigation team (JIT) report before the Sindh High Court during the hearing of petitions seeking judicial inquiry into the Baldia factory fire case.

The accused obtained bail in the six cases in October 2014. However, Qureshi did not attend the court hearings after the JIT report surfaced before the SHC. According to the JIT report prepared in June 2013 and submitted in the SHC on February 6 this year, Qureshi disclosed that the Baldia factory was set on fire after its owners failed to pay protection money. The JIT report mentioned him as an MQM worker, which was vehemently denied by the party.

The suspect failed to appear for the hearing on Saturday. During a previous hearing, the court had also imposed fines upon the guarantors for their failure to produce the accused.
