‘We are star-stuff’: World Space Week celebrated

BAHAWALPUR/ FAISALABAD: World Space Week has kicked off at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Events celebrating astronomical discoveries will be held in collaboration with the SUPARCO throughout the week.

The IUB has been organising the Space Week for three years. The university has organised screening of short documentary movies, seminars, a spacewalk, a poster-making competition, a quiz show, a declamation contest, a space festival, a rocket-building competition and special lectures for the students of IUB and other schools.

Minister for Education Rana Mashhood inaugurated the Space Week at the Abbasia Campus on Tuesday. He said the World Space Week celebrations by the IUB and the SUPARCO would be an informative and an enjoyable experience for students. Mashhood said the government had initiated several projects, including laptop and scholarship schemes, and was spending billions of rupees to equip the youth with the necessary skills and knowledge to take the country’s reins in the future.

“The Bahawalpur youth are talented. Their glowing faces are full of the promise of a bright future,” he said.



Bahawalpur district will be developed, the minister said. The government has initiated several uplift projects for this purpose, he said.

“The country’s largest solar park has been setup in this district. The district’s industrial zone, which is in the works, will help develop the region.”

Vice Chancellor Qaiser Mushtaq said the IUB was playing a pivotal role in the promotion of scientific research.  “The IUB will continue to play a positive role in the promotion of science and technology and in community development.”

UAF kicks off space poster competition

The University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, (UAF) on Tuesday kicked off a poster competition among students of 30 schools in Faisalabad as part of its World Space Week celebrations.

A tchoukball match was also arranged for girls of the UAF Laboratory Girls High School.

The poster contest’s theme this year is discovery. Students have been asked to depict the history of scientific achievements in space sciences in a creative way.

The poster competition was inaugurated by former Pir Mehar Ali Shah (PMAS) Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi vice chancellor Khalid Mehmood, SUPARCO National Agriculture Information Director Ijaz Ahmad Bhutta and Prof Khalilur Rehman.

Mehmood urged the participants to acquire knowledge of the space and the universe.  He said the activities held as part of the World Space Week provided a platform to students to give their voice to innovative ideas and to express their talents.

Ijaz Ahmad Bhutta said SUPARCO was taking all possible steps to push the boundaries of the knowledge of the universe. He said they were conducting several research projects pertaining to space.

He said that World Space Week was fundamental to space outreach and education. “It helps educate people around the world about the space.”

Khalilur Rehman said the celebrations would encourage students to learn more about science, technology and engineering and to foster international cooperation in space outreach and education.

On October 7, a declamation contest and a quiz competition under the banner of the Office of the Senior Tutor would be arranged.
