The meeting that was convened with the chief secretary, Mohammad Siddique Memon, in the chair on Tuesday was informed that officials of the cooperative housing society had received Rs179 million from the allottees of the housing scheme that was supposed to be started in Malir. Instead of launching the scheme, however, they sold around 243 plots to builders in 2007-8. "This is one of the biggest scams that the anti-corruption establishment has uncovered and strict action will be taken against the officials involved," the chairman of the anti-corruption establishment, Mumtaz Shah, told the meeting.
The committee also ordered to register FIRs against the executive engineers and sub-engineers of the irrigation department for bungling around Rs30 million allocated for development schemes in Ghotki district. "After misappropriating this amount, officials of the irrigation department produced fake receipts to show they had utilised it for the development work, which was not done," said an official in the anti-corruption department. The committee also ordered to start 11 open inquiries against official of the works and services department and the irrigation department.
Briefing about the progress in the work, Mumtaz Ali Shah said that they had initiated around 439 open inquiries against government officials working in various grades, from 17 to 20, and had arrested many of them.
Anti-Corruption director Nazar Mohammad Bozdar said that two committees of department were dealing with corruption cases. "The committee working under the supervision of the chief secretary has so far recommended 36 cases to be registered against government officials and initiated 111 open inquires," he said.
