LAHORE: The Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority will offer free registration to 14,000 uncertified skilled workers under its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme this year, Chairperson Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said at the TEVTA secretariat on Sunday.

He was chairing a meeting to review the progress of the RPL’s second phase. He said they had received an encouraging response over the past two weeks.

He said 6,000 people had registered for the programme with the Trade Testing Board (TTB).

Sheikh said under the programme, uncertified skilled workers would receive certification after passing theory and practical tests in trades they had been trained in.

He said 15 demand-driven vocational trades had been offered in the second phase of the RPL to workers under the Ustad Shagird System.  The programme has been designed according to local and international market requirements, he said.

Candidates who are at least 18 years old and have two years of industry experience, evidence of earlier training, record of employment, and a reference from an employer can register with the programme.

They are then tested through an integrated theory and practical assessment (knowledge, skill and aptitude).

Sheikh said the programme was free of cost and would help those who were not able to acquire skills through a formal technical education system.

He said that 15 vocational short courses include Auto Electrician, Auto CAD (Civil), Machine Embroidery, Mason, Plumber & Sanitary Installer, Electrician, Auto Mechanic (Petrol), Tailoring, Steel Fixer, Welder, Machinist, Motorcycle Mechanic, HVACR, Beautician and Building Painter were being offered under the RPL.

He said upon receiving the certificate, a worker would be acknowledged anywhere in the country as well as abroad as a certified skilled worker.

Chief Operating Officer Jawad Ahmed Qureshi, TEVTA officers Abdul Qayyum, Azhar Iqbal Shad, Akhtar Abbas Bharwana, Haroon Naseer, Muhammad Usman Ali, Ayesha Qazi, Sarfraz Anwar, Amir Hasan and Maqsood Ahmed were present at the meeting.
