Fuel choice: Nawaz reviews progress on LNG power plants

The prime minister also directed to ensure observance of legal formalities in the preparatory work and agreement

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a high level meeting on Wednesday to review the progress on the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) power plants and the Sahiwal coal power plant.


During the meeting held at the PM House, he directed the ministries and departments concerned to finalise all required procedures for in time commencement of work on the power plants.


The prime minister also directed to ensure observance of legal formalities in the preparatory work and agreements and to maintain transparency relating to all aspects of the projects, the
statement said.


Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Petroleum Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Water and Power Minister Khawaja Asif, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and secretaries and high officials of the ministries concerned attended the meeting.

Pakistan doesn't have enough natural gas to keep the existing power plants running at capacity and hasn't been able to come up with the financing to get Qatar to sign a long term LNG supply contract. Some would argue that building a power plant without the fuel is like putting a cart before the horse.
