A day after MPA Syed Ali Nawaz Shah was sentenced to five years in prison by an accountability court, Sindh chief minister Qaim Ali Shah paid a surprise visit to Karachi Central Jail to meet the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) parliamentarian.
The chief minister, whose visits to the prison are rare, met the imprisoned PPP MPA on Friday afternoon and inquired about his health, said an official. During the visit, he also visited a barrack for convicted prisoners, tasted the food the kitchen prepares for the prisoners and visited the art gallery.
According to Chief Minister House's official press release, he announced that those involved in minor crimes will be given a respite of two months. "Criminals should be brought to justice with proper investigation and prosecution," said the chief minister, directing the authorities to strictly follow the jail manual.
He told the authorities to give him a list of criminals who were languishing in the jail because of unpaid penalties and promised that the government will pay on their behalf.
