PESHAWAR: Students of Al-Razi Medical College protested outside Peshawar Press Club on Wednesday and threatened to not only set themselves ablaze but also seize the college building if they were not allowed to sit for their examinations this year.

Addressing a news conference at Peshawar Press Club, students said they had been admitted to Al-Razi Medical College after following the proper enrolment procedure in 2013.

The institute was recognised by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) as well as the Khyber Medical University (KMU).

However, a month into the academic year, an inspection team visited the college and found out that the administration lacked ownership of the building as well as the hospital. The medical college’s recognition by PMDC and KMU was immediately suspended.

The college administration assured students the issue would be resolved soon and that a court stay order would be obtained to enable them to sit for the exams. However, Imran Khan, a medical student at the demonstration, said KMU informed the students a day before their examinations that they cannot take them.

This is despite the fact that the students had already submitted their forms. “They also refused to hand us our roll numbers,” he added.

“We do not care about any other college issue and just need our roll numbers so we can sit for our exams,” Imran said. “Our families have invested a lot in our education and they are quite concerned right now.”

The agitated students threatened self-immolation and seizure of the college building if their concerns were not addressed by Thursday.

More warning bells

In the meanwhile, students from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas held a demonstration against India and Afghanistan for plotting conspiracies against Pakistan and vowed to defend the country against any aggression.

The protesters chanted slogans in favor of the armed forces and pledged to support the people of Kashmir in their fight for independence.

Talking to the media, student federation’s president Haroon Afridi said tribespeople were peace-loving and never hesitated to render sacrifices to safeguard their homeland.
