LONDON: Australia opener David Warner has been ruled out of the rest of the series against England and faces a race to be fit for next month’s tour of Bangladesh after breaking his thumb at Lord’s.

Warner was struck a painful blow on the left thumb as he got in a tangle trying to play fast-bowler Steven Finn’s second-ball bouncer.

After on-field treatment, Warner retired hurt for one and the 28-year-old played no further part in the match. He will fly back home on Monday.

Australia have called up Aaron Finch, the World Cup-winning opener, for the remaining three one-dayers against England.

“It’s very exciting to be back,” said Finch, whose hamstring injury during the Indian Premier League scuppered his hopes of an earlier tour call. “It’s unfortunate for David Warner for me to come in under these circumstances, that’s not ideal, but these things happen in cricket and it’s great for me to be back.”
