Govt releases first installment of Rs5b for rehabilitation of TDPs

Comprehensive development programme has been chalked out for rehabilitation of tribal people in Fata region

The federal government has released the first installment of five billion rupees for rehabilitation of temporarily displaced persons (TDPs) and reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), Radio Pakistan reported.

Participants of a high-level meeting in Peshawar were informed about the release of funds by the federal government on Sunday.

Further, the participants of the meeting were also informed that a comprehensive development programme has been chalked out for the rehabilitation of the tribal people who were displaced during the recent military operations against militants in Fata.

It was noted by the participants of the meeting that work on different developmental projects at a cost of Rs3.5 billion is in progress under the programme in remote areas of Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency. “At least 200 Levies personnel have been recruited to maintain law and order in the valley.”

As many as 336,762 families from Fata were displaced due to the fighting in the tribal areas and a counter-operation launched by the government last June.

Earlier this month, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had said that China will provide $10 million to Pakistan for rehabilitation of TDPs.

Meanwhile, the World Bank has approved a $75 million loan for Pakistan to help the government provide financial support to people temporarily displaced by the military’s Operation Zarb-e-Azb against the Taliban.

The loan is meant to finance the Fata TDPs Emergency Recovery Project. Households from five tribal agencies – North Waziristan, South Waziristan, Orakzai, Kurram and Khyber – will receive financial assistance from the government.
