PESHAWAR: The tripartite alliance of opposition parties in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has decided boycott the district nazim and town nazim elections in Peshawar scheduled for Sunday (today).

The announcement was made during a news conference at PPP leader Tamash Khan’s residence on Friday.

“Awami National Party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl and Pakistan Peoples Party have serious reservations over the amendments made to clauses in the local government act regarding the election of nazims and naib nazims,” said former senator and JUI-F leader Haji Ghulam Ali. “The changes were not required. However, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders made the amendment to serve their own interests.”

According to Ali, candidates were given only an hour to submit their nomination papers for the election.

“These are some tactics through which PTI is trying to rig the elections in their favour,” Ali added.

Modus operandi

The alliance has decided to boycott elections in Town-I, Town-II and Town-III. However, the alliance would take part in the election for Town-IV where they are competing with PTI. However, the parties would form governments in the areas where they are in a majority.

When contacted, JUI-F provincial information secretary Maulana Abdul Jalil Jan said they would not boycott elections in other districts.

“It would not be a double standard to boycott elections in one district and participate in them it in another,” Jan said. “The decision has been taken by JUI-F’s district chapter after consultation with ANP and PPP.”
